Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

And just for the record, what draft position do the Browns have?
If I remember correctly we don't have a first round pick so our first pick is in the 2nd round. Since we didn't make the playoffs my guess is that we are somewher in the 15-21 range of the 2nd round but I'm totally guessing. :)

If you figure 12 teams make the playoffs, and 20 don't, your last 12 picks (21-32) would be for those playoff teams. Considering the NFC is horrible, Cleveland's 10-6 record should be good for the 20th pick.

Ok sure, what he said. I was trying to do that without the math. At the time of my post I had been drinking for a while. Thanks for doing the math.

Browns: Coming close incentive for next season

Tuesday, January 1, 2008 2:52 AM
By James Walker

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA, Ohio -- The Cleveland Browns felt odd yesterday leaving their locker room for the final time this season.
The consensus among players was that the Browns (10-6) were a playoff-caliber team. Yet they will sit home watching the playoffs for a fifth straight season.
Cleveland was edged out by Tennessee (10-6), which earned the final AFC wild-card spot via a tiebreaker.
"It's difficult because I know a lot of guys on this team feel we can go in the playoffs and be competitive," punter Dave Zastudil said. "At the same time, we put ourselves in this position. That's the bottom line."

Browns coach Romeo Crennel said Monday that Derek Anderson is his starting quarterback, but he will listen to offers for Anderson, who can become a restricted free agent Feb. 29.
"If anybody's interested in him, we'll just have to see how it goes," said Crennel. "Sometimes people can make you an offer and you can say, 'No, I think I'm going to stick with what I've got.' Sometimes they make you an offer and you say, 'Oooh!' So we'll see how it goes."
The Browns have several options for Anderson, who went 10-5 as a starter this season. They can:
1. Give him the high tender of a first- and third-round pick, meaning a team that signs him would have to compensate the Browns with those picks. In addition, the Browns could match any offer. If no one makes an offer, the Browns would have to pay him a minimum of $2.562 million for 2008 or sign him to a long-term deal.

Four things for the Browns to do in the off-season

Tuesday, January 01, 2008

Coaches have their "48-hour rule," which permits players no more than 48 hours to dwell on a win before focusing energy on the next game.
Organizations have theirs, too.
A 10-6 season for the Browns, including a record- seven wins at home, is something to build on, but nothing to savor too long.
You get to this point, and it's over, and you know you have to start all over again," coach Romeo Crennel said Monday.
Football is a business, and the business of football takes over when the football ends.
Here are the immediate priorities the Browns have to focus on while the playoffs proceed without them.
1. Work out a deal to bring back Jamal Lewis.
Lewis will be 29 next season, and there's an avalanche of evidence that says NFL running backs descend quickly after the age of 30. So a long- term deal might not be in order, but Lewis has said he's agreeable to something less than that. Lewis' impact on the team transcends his 1,304 rushing yards and 11 TDs overall (nine on the ground). Backup tailback Jason Wright said if Lewis does not return, the void would be huge. "I'm sure his statistics speak for themselves. That's obvious," Wright said. "For me, personally, I feel I would miss a leader on this team who's done a lot for me. I think our running back room had our most productive year in a long time. Everybody was productive in things they were called to do in their role. A lot of that comes back to J Lew. He took a leadership role . . . how he carried himself, how he pushed through some lulls in the season but had great production at the end . . . the way he stayed dedicated and kept his body in shape, the way he studied. So we would miss a leader, for sure. A guy who does it the right way."
2. Map out the future for Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn.
It's fine to say, "We'll let that play out." But it must play out the right way, and for that to happen, the Browns have to decide how they want it to play out. It's Pollyanna-ish to think both of these young men with bright futures can co-exist beyond another season. Next season will be difficult enough. The Browns have to decide which QB is more capable of taking the team to the Super Bowl. They then must maximize the value of the other QB through trade or other means (draft pick compensation). The long-term quarterback should be in place for the start of the 2008 season. And, please, no quarterback "competition" in training camp. Make the decision before then and stick to it.

BROWNS INSIDER
Jurevicius wants to play one more season

Browns receiver Joe Jurevicius said he wants to play one more season. Jurevicius turned 33 a week before completing his 10th NFL campaign.
"I think for sure I've got one more year," Jurevicius said. "I'm going to come back and have the best off-season I have in me and give this thing one more go-round - [because] I know what we have - and then I'll probably hang them up.
"But I do know I want to be a Cleveland Brown for one more year, and I want to get a taste of what I know we can be."

Cleveland Browns and their fans are not victims, Plain Dealer columnist Bud Shaw writes

Tuesday, January 01, 2008 Bud Shaw
Plain Dealer Columnist
Bestowing mysti cal victim status on the Browns or their fans is folklore.
The inconvenient truth is far more good than bad happened this season. The Browns received more breaks than went against them. Woe wasn't them. Or you.
They didn't miss the playoffs in Indianapolis when the Titans beat the Colts. They missed them in Cincinnati, in Oakland in September and in Arizona early last month against a team more depleted than the desert water supply.

Crennel resisting changes at helm
Coach says Anderson is starting quarterback
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Tuesday, Jan 01, 2008

BEREA: More emphatically than ever, Browns coach Romeo Crennel said Monday he wants Derek Anderson as his starting quarterback.
In the locker room, receiver Joe Jurevicius and tight end Kellen Winslow stood a few feet across from each other and took opposite views of what will happen next season.
Without a new contract by Feb. 28, Anderson is scheduled to become a restricted free agent and is sure to draw suitors. Waiting in the wings is Brady Quinn, the 22nd overall pick who played one series all year. In a draft-day trade with Dallas, the Browns surrendered a 2007 second-round pick and 2008's first-rounder (ironically No. 22) to select the former Notre Dame star.
''You draft a guy, especially in the first round, he's playing,'' Winslow said. ''Derek's a great guy, but that's just the way this business works.''

Browns notebook
More surgery could be ahead for Winslow
Tight end still pained by right knee, but stays evasive about shoulder
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Tuesday, Jan 01, 2008

BEREA: Browns tight end Kellen Winslow hinted Monday that he might need another surgery on his right knee, which was injured severely in a 2005 motorcycle accident.
The knee required microfracture surgery before the 2007 season. He was also cagey about his left shoulder, which he separated Sept. 23 at Oakland.
Winslow didn't miss a game this season and caught 82 passes for 1,106 yards, third on the Browns' single-season receiving yards list.
''You guys don't know what's going on with the knee,'' Winslow said. ''I'm not going to explain it. Just playing through pain, so I just have to get it looked at and see what I can do.
''I'm going to get my exit physical and we will see.''
As for his shoulder, Winslow said: ''I'm not going to say if I need surgery or I don't. You guys will know.''

How cares about draft position. As long we take defensive players and nothing else. We need a big run stuff tackle and and help in the secondary. We are getting better though and we have some cap room. :)

I have faith that Savage will have another good to above average draft......defensive line help and secondary help is very important.
I don't understand why you guys think we need secondary help. Bodden came on again as the season progressed. Wright was a rookie and played extremely well as did MacDonald. Jones and Pool came on as the season progressed. Plus Adams played fairly well as a backup safety.

We need to get a DLor two in free agency but that is going to be difficult since most teams in the NFL are now running a 3-4 and there are not many free-agent prospects that are going to be available. Hopefully, we can at least get one in free agency and luck out in the draft.

I think that we also need a pass rushing OLB to play opposite Wembley. Will he has only one more season on his contract plus he is getting old and isn't the same dominant player that he used to be. Plus we need some protection against injuries. I also would like the Browns to get a more dominating inside backer with some speed. Jackson is not that big and even though he probably led the team in tackles he is not a run stuffer and Davis lacks speed.
