Cleveland Browns (2012 season)

Someone who won't be 29 by the time the season starts.

The good news is this round of management will feel obligated to play Weeden since they took him in the first round. Once he struggles and has no time to develop since he's already 44, the pick will be so embarrassingly bad they'll have no choice but to find a new president/GM.

If anyone wants a tremendous laugh go back to page 60 or so. It's really bad when approximately 70% of this board could have run better drafts than the Browns since the franchise came back......

I just don't understand the infatuation with Chip Kelly. Maybe it's just the Browns fan in me but I think that hiring Kelly would be an unmitigated disaster. How in the world can they consider hiring such a player specific offensive coach?

But let's all face it. Can it really get any worse? At this point I expect them to lose all 16 games next season (although that would get them Clowney right?).

Well it's not like that system has won any national titles either.

Kelly would make me laugh, but then again, I expect the Clowns to do something stupid like that.

I don't think his offense is necessarily player specific. It'd probably surprise you to learn that the New England Patriots have been operating a form of Oregon's offense the last 2-3 years.

Just because it is a spread, run at high tempo doesn't mean it needs a duel threat QB or it is designed for a specific player in mind. It's about creating space for skill players and forcing mis-matches.

I think Chip Kelly will be pretty successful wherever he lands. I think players will love playing for him. My biggest question would be who makes the roster decisions for him and what kind of defense does he have behind him.

As an FYI, Jason La Canfora is reporting that Chip Kelly will stay at Oregon, and the Browns are in a 2 team race for Bill O'Brien.

I think hiring Bill O'Brien would be a huge mistake. The guy was going to be fired as New Englands offensive coordinator, but he jumped ship before it happened. Taking a team with 30 seniors in a down Big 10 and winning 8 games isn't really the resume I'd like to see from our next coach.

This might be kind of crazy, but what about David Shaw from Stanford?

Any chance he would leave Stanford? He's done a heck of job there, and would run an O that could fit the personel

Not that it matters, but I think he just signed a 5 year extension to stay at Stanford.

I know about the New England spread, but they also have Tom Brady running the show there. I have said that I'm withholding judgement on Weeden until there is a real coach there so I guess I'd like to see what Chip Kelly would do with him. Heaven knows he isn't going to be running much of the zone read, so I would expect to see the type of offense that I have seen in New England for much of this season.

I mentioned Shaw a couple weeks ago.

As for New England. They use passing concepts to get players in space -
especially from the slot (Welker) but they don't run anything resembling Oregon with IZ/OZ or double Zone reads.

I'm curious - is there anyone you guys would be happy with?

I'm referring to the group of you. Seems like one or two people want one guy, everyone else wants someone different.

Well, there's the obvious (neither of which will happen)- Gruden, Cowher

If they go the assistant route- Roman, or maybe Mike McCoy.

I wouldn't be too upset with Kelly, just because I think it'd at least be interesting. I really like David Shaw, but I don't think he's leaving Palo Alto to come to Cleveland.

There really isn't a whole lot out there, IMO. I'm hoping the impossible happens, Haslam opens the wallet and makes either Gruden or Cowher an offer they can't refuse. Not holding my breath, though.

This. $ talks, so make it rain Haslam. You want consistency? Go get Gruden or Cowher
