Cleveland Browns (2016 thread of unrelenting dumpster conflagration)

Using this logic, teams should only draft QBs in the 6th round because that's where Tom Brady went.

Drafting Tom Brady is a way to get to Super Bowls and win. Playing lights out D with a solid run game is a way to get to a Super Bowl and win. There are lots of ways to do it. The Browns just can't do any of them.

Elite qb play is what gets you to the big dance. Teams don't dilfer their way there anymore. The closest anyone has come since then was mark Sanchez and the Jets about 7 years ago.

Maybe. Everybody has a different definition of elite QB play. Russell Wilson probably won more with defense than being elite. Not to take anything away from Russell as he is a good QB. Joe Flacco? Meh. Good, not elite. Eli Manning? I wouldn't call him elite and that's hard to say since he has two rings but watch him and try to find the "elite" in Eli. Brad Johnson won one after Dilfer.

It's difficult to "Dilfer" your way to a Super Bowl win but you don't have to "Brady" your way to one either. It just depends on the makeup of your team. I wouldn't say Denver won last year because of elite QB play. Peyton had his worst year of his career. Osweiler could have won that Super Bowl last year.

Of course, you could argue that winning a Super Bowl is what makes you elite. That's the only way Joe Flacco enters the conversation.

This happened last year. Manning was an "elite" QB in name only.

Peyton Manning, despite having no useful throwing arm, was still a surgeon in recognition of the defense and checking into proper plays, nobody in the NFL ever did it better. If you don't think that made a difference, look at Denver this year. That vaunted defense and running game has them sitting home this off season.

Russell Wilson is certainly on the elite tier of QBs. As for flacco and Eli, neither are "elite" but their play for the stretch run and post season certainly was. And they are still leaps and bounds better than the Trent dilfers, Josh mccowns, etc... being discussed here. I mean, not even in the same ballpark talent wise.

You are correct. Just pointing out that "elite" isn't the only answer. Talented, and then playing well when it counts can definitely get you there. That is the spectrum between Dilfer and elite.

Let's not even mention Josh McCown

No, guys like flacco and eli, even on their bad days, are leaps and bounds better than trent dilfer. the andy dalton's of the world only carry you so far. hell, the texans have one of the top defenses in the entire nfl, a good OL, and a very good rb, and they are sitting home this year with brock osweiler under center.

Flacco and Eli are talented and played well when it counted. Yeah, that's better than Dilfer but that's exactly what I said. Andy Dalton never played better when it counted. If Dilfer could do it, Andy Dalton can.

AND

The Texans won their division. The one with Andrew Luck.
