Cleveland Browns (2016 thread of unrelenting dumpster conflagration)

i'm sure the redskins are quite pleased that they gave up 3 drafts worth of picks for the current starting qb of the browns.

I wasn't aware Josh McCown was no longer on the roster?

@LitlBuck
As for Bosa, we just watched him man handle guards for 3 seasons when he slides inside on passing downs. Let us also consider the amount of 4 down looks Horton has played and will continue to do so.
By some miracle if Joey is there at 8, you take him and don't think twice.

I wasn't a fan of this trade down before the draft because there is always the chance the Rams take Wentz (I prefer Goff). That being said, we now command a solid amount of picks and ammo that could be used
to move up in this years draft. Not in the first round, mind you, but back up in the 2nd.

Picture this. The Brownies get Bosa at 8, then at 32 Michael Thomas, potentially bundle the nice little 2nd rounder the Eagles gave us down the road with perhaps a 4th this year - snatch up Spriggs from IU with the trade up.

You have now addressed 3 of the top 4 problems the Browns have. 1) Pressure on the QB 2) WR talent 3) RT ... thus allowing Greco to move to center should Erving be as bad as he was last year.

I won't ignore LJB's feelings. A franchise QB would cure many ills. So if Goff goes #1 overall, then the Browns have already secured a heck of a move. If it's Wentz? Then I'm perfectly ok with that as well.

Jerry will stupidly take the DE from Oregon.

Fine by me. Buckner is this years version of Dion Jordan (hilariously, another Duck)

Buckner is nothing like Dion Jordan. He's probably my least favorite guy at the 8 spot, but he's nothing like Jordan. If anything, he's a more athletic version of Arik Armstead. Both big guys that can move well, but get their ass handed to them far more than they should. Just hope Jerry Jones gets stupid and falls into the measurables hype train and takes him at 4, or Baltimore does at 6.

2012 - 1.2
2012 - 2.1
2013 - 1.22
2014 - 1.2

But in the end, like with analyzing what Cleveland should do, the first goal is to not be terrible at drafting. The rams collected 6 picks via the Redskins trade (and dealt those for more).

Their results were pretty rough

So the Rams traded one pick and wound up with three defensive starters, a running back who had one solid year before falling off, and an offensive lineman who hasn’t shown anything yet, but still could. What the Rams still don’t have, however, is a franchise quarterback (unless you believe more in Nick Foles than I do). But does Washington?

Obviously, the easy answer is “no.” Since RGIII’s spectacular rookie campaign, he has been injured, ineffective, embattled, injured again, and ineffective again.
Washington failed spectacularly with their 3 first round picks but did very well with their 3rd round pick. Cousins is probably not a franchise guy but he's a pretty decent pickup, especially at that point in the draft.

If I were cleveland, I'd grab a developmental guy like Jones or Cook, fill some of the many holes with these extra picks and then keep rebuilding next year. If you draft well both years, you could be set up pretty nicely and better than if you grabbed one really good QB and didn't have the volume of draft picks to fix the many leaks.

Oh, do not get me wrong I would love for the Browns to take Joey but I am just not sure if they would use him in the best manner.

Also, if they could come out of the first-round with a DE, WR, and OL as you suggested that would be excellent.

Perhaps I should have clarified. I like at Buckner like Dion Jordan. Both players that shot up draft boards during the back half of their last season in school. Have technique, discipline and consistency issues.
But, they're both athletic and for some reasons front offices still fall for that.

I think that's one reason to not draft one of those QBs at #2. The Browns have been spending first rounders on QBs for years and the rest of the team has suffered for it. They need to build up the supporting cast by trading down for more picks, and go with Griffin/McCown at QB. I'm not sold on Goff and Wentz as the first two picks in the draft, either, so that's probably part of my thinking.

Yeap. Get bpa and best QB next year imo.

That would be a steal. Trade down and still get the best dline. Can't see it happening though.

Loved the trade made earlier today. I've been wanting them to trade down from the beginning. This team has way too many needs.

I would love Zeke but he won't fall past the Cowboys at 4. I don't think Treadwell is a good pick at 8 (that's stretching to get him that high). Bosa doesn't fit. I really don't know who they will go after now. They need some offensive playmakers.

The trade tells me they aren't in the get rich quick scheme that I think the Browns have been haunted by for the last 10-15 years. Give RG3 a shot, build up the skill positions we need, and take a shot at a QB next year if RG3 doesn't come back from the dead.

I like where we are sitting right now pre-draft. Just don't fuck this up like you have since '99

I'm pretty sure RGIII behind this oline - esp if they trade Thomas - will be his death.
Wish they would've kept manziel to be the sacrificial lamb to next years #1 pick. I'd pay for all access packages just to see him get destroyed back there every game.

All the first round trade backs they've had over the years have been good moves IMO. The problem has always been what they do with those picks. I just hope Moneyball knows how to rate college football players so we don't have another Weeden or Manziel. Would love to see CJ fall to a 3rd round pick now that the Browns have plenty of them. I feel he has almost as much of a chance to be a franchise QB as the top 2 picks, but would have a couple years to season behind RG3 and McCown. I feel the Bosa is the next Watt so if he's there at 8 I take him. You can adjust the D based on the players you have. The Browns have the pieces to run a 4-3 with Bosa at DE.

I'd hate to see Cardale in Cleveland tbh. Wouldn't get development he needs, will be thrown to the wolves when inevitable injuries mount up, and probably finished before time for the important contract.
Eze, Bosa, Lee, Apple etc. .... would all do fine and get paid and/or move to a competitive org down the road. QB is a diff situation... not many get a 2nd chance and Clev is a career killer for a few reasons.
