I find coach Hafley in the booth to be both peculiar and understandable at the same time. I get both sides...He’s got a better view of the secondary as whole up there so, I get that part. His position during games may even be his own choosing.
But I also feel that he can bring that JUICE to the sideline (much like coach Coombs) and a younger team could greatly benefit from his infectious attitude from down there too.
And then, I remember our D Line coach brings that JUICE!
Not concerned.

Hafley focused on staying true to defensive philosophies against FAU
Going into the first game of the season, Jeff Hafley and the Ohio State defense are more focused on doing the right things than making major adjustments for their opponent.
Ahead of their Saturday game against Florida Atlantic, the defense will be relying on properly executing their training and staying true to their identity to win.
“In a first game it’s hard, because you are watching last year’s tape,” Hafley said. “For us it’s about us right now, and I am not saying that knocking them at all. It’s really whoever we were going to play in this first game we have to worry about ourselves.”
The internal focus will allow the Buckeyes to build solid habits and correct mistakes going forward.
There seems to be a confidence in the players that will suit up for the Buckeyes on the defensive end, and the philosophy of Hafley is to rely on his players’ talent rather than leaning on a complex system.
“Our philosophy right now is to try and make it as crystal clear as we can, and then on game day, we have to go play ball,” Hafley said.
Breaking down defense to its most basic element, tackling is the supreme focus. Robert Landers said that the struggles in that area from last season are unlikely to carry over to this year’s unit.
“I feel like we’ve hit on that so much this offseason that I feel like our improvement of developing on tackling, not only as individuals but as a team, is going to be completely different than last season," Landers said.

I think a lot of the talk about poor tackling from last year is being over-blown. But it motivates them to improve this year I'm all for it.
Many of their issues were directly related to poor gap integrity and bad pursuit angles, which led to guys being out of position to make plays. I feel things will get straightened out this fall and we'll get back to Silver Bullets flying to the football and less big plays...... and please, more forced TO's.

Hafley, also OSU’s secondary coach, has his guys playing faster and way more physically than they did last season. They are only allowing 222 yards per game, almost half of last year’s mark (403). The bigger stat: Last season Ohio State was No. 118 in the FBS in allowing plays of 30+ yards or more, with 39. So far there are only two teams that have played four games and have allowed less than the three 30+ yard plays the Buckeyes have given up.

Stealing Jeff Hafley away would be undeniably Rutgers' biggest win over Ohio State since college football was invented (by Rutgers, ironically), but I just don't see this happening, mostly because I think Hafley is intelligent enough to realize that ain't the job he wants.
Related, how soon can we get Chris Ash on staff in some sort of low-paying support role so Rutgers can pay him to coach at Ohio State?

Too soon old, too late smart
Doubt whether Hafley would go to Rutgers as HC. He needs a couple more years as DC (co or not) to make his chops in the college ranks. Day did three (or was it two?) before he ascended to HC in his own program. Naw, a couple of NCS runs with the Buckeyes, and three or five more 1st rounder DBs, and I would opine that a stable power 5 team would take a chance. With Oklahoma (Riley) and tOSU (Day) having first timers make a big splash, methinks more big schools will go that route rather than recycling fired coaches. People like Urban will always have places if they want them, but getting canned from two or more places probably means stepping back into a DC or OC role. Maybe the Peter principle at work? Go Bucks!
