Coaching changes: coaches hired and fired, comings and goings

4. Kelly would leave Oregon because Michigan is a far more prestigious and storied program than Nike University is. Similarly, Harbaugh would leave Stanford because ... IT'S FREAKING STANFORD. They are an afterthought on the national stage and they're lucky to draw 15,000 fans to a game even when they're ranked in the Top 10. Granted, Miami doesn't draw well either, but they're in the Eastern Time Zone and they get much more media attention. Plus, the Dolphins are in town.

Winning brings prestige, and Chip Kelly is in a position at Oregon to do about as much winning as one could imagine. They have top-notch facilities, no direct challenger in their conference and can recruit the hell out of California. What can M*ch*g*n offer besides folk tales from the leather helmet days that he doesn't already have?

As for Harbaugh, I know it's Stanford, but my gut feeling with him is that he's wired a little differently. Stanford seems inclined to make it worth his while to stay, and Harbaugh just may take them up on it.

Jon Embree is an interesting choice for head coach at Colorado - that is, if "stupid" is regarded as a synonym for "interesting."

Embree, a relatively young African-American, is clearly a politically-correct choice who can be expected to placate the liberal dope-smoking alumni base that the Buffs rely upon. That is, until his lack of head coaching experience at any level proves that he's not ready to head a BCS program. Ganjaheads are no different from any other fans in that they demand a winner, so unfortunately this promising young coach will likely end up on the coaching trash heap rather than getting the chance to develop his HC skills in a less pressure-packed environment, say at an FCS (1AA) program.

Kind of too bad for Colorado fans; had they been able to wait a month or two, they could have gotten Marvin Lewis.
it fits the budget in boulder. that is when you spend a million bucks, you get million dollar results. (i should not spending 3m doesnt guarantee youve made a good choice, but these days it takes a 2, 3 or 4 to get top flight football coaches...)

Harbaugh went to high school in Palo Alto, and taking the Michigan job involves moving to Michigan. Two strikes in Stanford's favor.

Well since Meyer left Florida, at least for a day or two, it sounds like Dan Mullen is the #1 prospect right now. With both the Miami and Florida jobs open, it will be interesting to see the coaching moves that happen in the next month or so. I really think Michigan is going to be a big loser once it is all said and done. They really needed to start their searching right after the OSU game. Since the AD is waiting until after the bowl game, they basically missed out on Harbaugh since he was offered an extension (which i doubt he passes up) and Michigan hasn't even made a move yet. The Florida and Miami job positions will also hurt Michigan waiting this long as well. You know Florida and Miami are going to try and hire a big name coach, and that big name could of been someone Michigan was going to go for.

Waiting until after the new year is one the dumbest decisions the Michigan athletic dept has made in the last 4 years...this is more dumb then hiring Rich Rod.

If Michigan chooses to keep Rodriguez, and this is in all honesty, I don't think its a dumb move coaching-wise. By not giving him the support publicly however, they may be doing a bit of harm recruiting-wise.

That being said, Michigan's chances of landing a top-notch head coach are low. Harbaugh is very much UNLIKELY to accept the Michigan job at the moment. Rodriguez has stripped the roster of any non-Rodriguez scheme players. So whoever comes in will have to run a system similar to Rodriguez's in order to compete. Simply put, Michigan is not an attractive option for the "hot" coaches right now. Mullen has UF and Miami and staying home at Miss. State for another year or two to lean back on. Harbaugh has staying at Stanford, any other coaching opportunity or the NFL. Michigan shouldn't go for assistant coaches, so that leaves out the Muschamp, Foster, Malzahn crowd (in my imo).

So Michigan has no viable alternatives other than to hold onto Rodriguez, and when you throw in the fact that they have paid him a lot of money and will owe him a lot of money if they fire him... it becomes pretty clear that they got nothing going for them other than to stay the course.

However, if Harbaugh has indicated privately that he'd like to head out there to Ann Arbor, then they have to get rid of Rodriguez and bite the financial bullet. I just don't think Jim has any real reason to leave behind his $3.5 million salary, a home in Palo Alto, CA for the rest of his life, access to California recruits and a winnable conference, and also bypass waiting on a possible NFL position...

I totally agree with what your saying. I also don't see any big name going to Michigan, even though they would've tried. The only viable option for Michigan if they got rid of Rich Rod is to go for an assistant or a lower division coach. I also agree that they should not go for an assistant, they need someone with a proven track record.

Sadly enough, I think it is going to be awhile before Michigan returns to it's glory days....which is bad for the rivalry and the Big Ten.

Miami, FL hires Temple's Al Golden

Cracked me up hearing people talk about Gruden, Pelini, etc. going to The U. It's not that great a job these days. They play in a half-filled pro stadium away from campus and have been passed by other Florida schools.
one still has to wonder if he eventually (next year) ends up at penn state? that list has to be relatively short. and if hes not on the next list id assume the next person (if on the current staff etc) gets canned relatively quickly, following a legend who was there since the dinosaurs roamed...
