Bernini

I don't want to play fair I'm a thugs-are-us coach
Bad offer from Wisconsin. Both our starting punter and kicker were freshmen this past season. Had he decided to commit, he's sitting until year 3 and not contributing a thing. To wit, it doesn't look like the Badgers are among his favorites, because he realizes playing time wouldn't be available for a while. But it's not like the opposing fans of whoever lands him takes that circumstance into account. So I'm sure we're going to hear about how some outsider stole him from the Badgers. But more importantly from a competitive perspective, the more players who have offers from in state but spurn the Badgers, the more of a copycat effect that can have among recruits. Right now, believe it or not, UW is the most prestigious program in the state. Kids grow up dreaming of becoming Badgers. Obviously, it would be harmful for the program if that changed.

Is it so far beyond the realm of possibility to think that Hagerup may be better than your current punter and/or kicker? He is the best punter recruit in the nation, after all. Indeed, the UW coaching staff must have at least thought this was possible, otherwise, why would they have given him an offer? I think your conclusion that he would definitely sit at UW until his junior year not contribute a thing is wholly speculative.

Maybe he just doesn't want to go to UW. Is that so incomprehensible to a UW fan? There are guys in Ohio that are offered by OSU and that do not go to Columbus. UW is no different--get over it.

Easy 07... Bernini has been a solid contributor of substance here for some time. I for one have enjoyed his input when needed, without bringing the smack talk along as well. If he is a bit frustrated that the state of Wisc. has a top player in the country at a position, but the Badgers are in poor position to take advantage due to the depth chart, then that is understandable. Let the man vent just once after 100+ good posts. It is not that often that Wisc. puts out a top guy( Clay, Oglesby, a few others) and I empathise with Bernini when his team doesn't look to be in the running. I expect if a stud like Braxton Miller had been only one class behind Pryor, and had eliminated the Bucks from contention due to our depth chart, you would have seen alot of similar frustrations coming out in posts from our guys. It is called being a fan.

No, it's called whining/trashing a recruit by implying that Hagerup doesn't have the ability to compete with the existing punter or kicker (claiming that if Hagerup chooses UW, "he's sitting until year 3 and not contributing a thing"). It was a sour grapes post because the poster doesn't think that Hagerup's going to choose UW. This isn't the place for that kind of posting.

Buckeyesin07 and I have a history, so he's just looking for a reason to take a shot.

This is what Hagerup said after he was informed Wisconsin was offering:

?I cant even put into words how special that was to hear because there's something special about the university and going to Camp Randall when you're young and all that. To hear those words come from Bret Bielema was pretty surreal. So I left their office with a big grin on my face and kind of had that the whole ride home,? Hagerup explained.

The state's hottest recruit: Whitefish Bay K/P Will Hagerup

Sound like a guy who just doesn't want to go to Wisconsin, all things equal? Not to me.

I was saying months ago, before Hagerup started listing any favorites, that I wasn't happy with the offer, and if we lost the recruiting battle, it'd be a blessing. In-state recruiting tracker - Page 5 - Recruiting Forums

And saying that is hardly "trashing" a recruit. Way to go for the false sympathy to try and influence people toward your side, '07. If Hagerup came to Wisconsin, until year 3 he'd be stuck on the depth chart behind a scholarship player who started as a true freshman, at a position where depth isn't really necessary, and it's not like he could contribute to the special teams in other ways in the interim. The Badgers had a dearth of quality D-Linemen the past two seasons which caused them to get worn down and the team to lose close games. Wouldn't it be a better idea to invest in another non special teamer who could provide relief to a unit which is prone to become injury-riddled and tired? It's a silly use of a scholarship. Not an indictment of Hagerup at all, just bad timing for both parties involved. I'm a huge Wisconsin fan as everybody here is aware of, but I'd go to Ohio State or any even semi attractive BCS school if I were in his position also.

Bernini, you're also talking to a fanbase that is used to having at least two players on scholarship at both kicker and punter. Heck, sometimes 3. The punt is the biggest play in football, ya know.

Besides, it's good to have that 2nd guy to help push each other to be better, and what if one of your starting K/P gets hurt? If one guy goes down, we've got a 2nd guy that can kick 45+ yard field goals and another back-up that can kick 39+ yard punts. I am convinced Mike Nugent would not have been the greatest Buckeye kicker of all time without Josh Huston pushing him everyday.

It seemed a little funny to us too when Tressel would recruit multiple guys for each K/P. but we don't question it anymore, despite the potential player we could recruit in their place. You just gotta trust the coaching staff.

All that said though, I'm with ya man. I hope Will doesn't pick Wiscy either!

Your post came off as sour grapes--after a Wisconsin kid basically eliminates UW from contention in his recruitment (in which OSU is still a player, I might add), you come on a Buckeye board and say that the kid isn't good enough to play at UW for several years, so you didn't want him anyway ("he's sitting until year 3 and not contributing a thing").

If you want to convince yourself that he's not good enough to play at UW for a few years and that OSU or UM will not have stolen him out of Wisconsin, maybe you should wander on over to the UW boards. As I said before, the UW coaching staff apparently disagrees with your assessment. And, to the extent that UW offered and he apparently isn't choosing UW, the school that he chooses will have stolen him from Wisconsin, whether you like it or not.

Well I proved you wrong, so make the adjustment.

Turns out Wisconsin is in his top 5, I was anticipating UW wouldn't be among his favorites because of the depth chart factor.

you come on a Buckeye board and say that the kid isn't good enough to play at UW for several years, so you didn't want him anyway ("he's sitting until year 3 and not contributing a thing").
You're intellectually dishonest, putting words in other people's mouths to make your points seem valid.

Thanks for proving that I was justified in attempting to nip that type of talk in the bud initially. My appearance in this thread was also to give OSU fans here, that I respect, an idea of where they stand, showing that Wisconsin wasn't a major player as they'd be accustomed to with one of our in-state prospects.

Use a time machine to travel back to 2007 and cease posting subsequently on this forum like your username promised. Bandwagon boy.

So you "proved me wrong" just because you said you proved me wrong? Sorry, but logical argument would disagree.

We'll see where he ends up.

So you never said that if he goes to UW, "he's sitting until year 3 and not contributing a thing?" Once you go back and see that you did say just that, it's pretty obvious that you've implicitly stated that you believe he doesn't have the talent, vis-a-vis UW's current players, to play.

Backpedal much?

Again, you haven't proved something just because you say it's true. Not that your posts around BP have shown that you are able to grasp that.

Arguing over the reasons a punter from Wisconsin won't end up with Bucky? This might be the silliest argument I've ever seen on BP. :tongue2:

Who wouldn't want a personal punter?

*snap* "Hagerup, this cat is rubbing against my legs. Make it stop."
*poomp* "Mrrrrrroooooooooooooooooooow!"

*snap* Hagerup. This bastard is harassing me. Kick him in the chin.
*crack* *thud*

I mean, really. There are tons of uses if you really stop and think about it.

I would assume that anyone reading the reference locker would know that I have the sense of humor of a 10-year old and do not speak for even the smallest minority of OSU fans. Perhaps 10 is too high. Maybe a 6-year old.

If my childish silliness offends, I do apologize. I meant no harm.
