Farewell and good luck to a pair of CBJ 1st-rounders (Moore and Brassard) that never really panned out.

TSN also says CBJ got a 3rd-round pick and veteran backup G Michael Leighton for Mason, and W Blake Comeau from Calgary for a 5th-rounder.

EDIT: Leighton career NHL stats: 105 games, 35-41-4, 2.97 GAA, .901 save %

Gaborik is having a bad year, but it's an awesome trade. Gaborik for Brassard, John Moore, Dorsett, 6th round pick. Gaborik scored 40 goals last season. Gaborik should score more than all the other players in this deal combined.

Jackets also got a third out of Philly for Mason. :lol:

They also traded a 5th for Blake Comeau. Not an impactful move, but it's good value.

EDIT: More about Gaborik - he's a RW, and he's been playing LW in New York. He'll be back at his natural spot in Columbus and I wouldn't be surprised to see his production take off after that. There are also rumors about Columbus dangling LA's first round pick for another scorer.

Gaborik is in the last year of a big deal, has 19 points in 35 games for NYR this season and was the MVP of last year's All-Star game. Can't hurt to have a veteran scorer in an actual playoff chase.

He'll be in Columbus next year too. Contract runs out after the 2013-2014 season. It's actually a really good deal from a contract POV too. They get rid of Brassard's contract, and if Gaborik doesn't work out they're rid of him after next season. Then they'll have a bunch of cap space.

Cool, that makes it even better--and makes more sense since Jarmo said he wasn't looking for rentals. It was oddly worded in the TSN article eh. I also should have said the move "can't hurt", not "can't help". I'm really on my game right now.

I just hope Gaborik works out better than all the other "high priced" acquisitions (i.e. Federov, Foote, Carter....etc.) that didn't pan out; they just wanted the money but really didn't want to actually play here.

Gaborik should have plenty left in the tank, unlike Foote and Federov. Carter didn't expect to be traded after just signing a lifetime deal with Philly. He was just a big baby, too. Gaborik actually had to waive his no-trade clause to come here, so he clearly wasn't opposed to the idea. He's also friends with Prospal, and they had great chemistry together when Prospal was in NY. I still love it.

2 very good trades for the Jackets. Can't believe the got a 3rd round pick AND a player. Philly fans are going to do wonders for Mason's confidence :biggrin:

Like getting Gaborik as well, Jackets needed more offense and he SHOULD provide it. They can reunite him with the couple players they got from the NYR in the Nash deal.

Hope fully this pushes them into the playoffs, and from their ANYTHING can happen.

Anybody think this guy this guy can help the Blue Jackets? Looks like he has spent a lot of time in the AHL:

I realize that a cardboard cutout of Ron Tugnut (in goal) could stop more pucks than Mason, so I just have to think he is an improvement.:biggrin:

Michael Arace bringing the optimism as usual:

Kekalainen managed to get Gaborik without compromising the future. Brassard needed a new address, and the addition of Gaborik is a hefty boost in skill. The losses of Dorsett and Moore are mitigated by the Blue Jackets? depth of bottom-six forwards and young defensemen. It was done without surrendering any of their three, prized first-round picks.

They have, in essence, traded Nash, Brassard, Dorsett, Moore and a sixth-round pick for Brandon Dubinsky, Artem Anisimov, Tim Erixon, Gaborik and a first-round pick. That is more than rearranging furniture. It is a renovation, well done.
