Blues Jackets’ Expansion Draft Plans Could Be in Trouble With Laine Deal

The Seattle Expansion Draft
As mentioned, Laine will be a restricted, arbitration-eligible free agent after this season. Even if Columbus chooses to qualify the Finnish winger, they’d still need to protect him if he remains unsigned. Otherwise, the Kraken could select Laine without having to offer financial compensation. Seattle would be acquiring his rights.

Much like a pending unrestricted free agent, the Kraken could select Laine and then have first rights to offer him a contract without having to give up draft assets. Seattle could acquire the young, talented, and elite goal scorer essentially for free. They would have their franchise player. The Kraken could then turn around and pay Laine whatever he wants because they will have the cap flexibility to do so. Honestly, it’s the ideal situation for him…

Under the expansion rules, the Blue Jackets can only protect up to seven forwards. You can almost guarantee that Cam Atkinson, Max Domi, Boone Jenner, Oliver Bjorkstrand, Jack Roslovic, and Gustav Nyquist occupy the first six slots. That leaves room for only one more player.

There are a few notable names exempt from the draft, including Alexandre Texier and Elvis Merzlikins. You can find the full exempt list here. https://www.capfriendly.com/expansion-draft/seattle Unfortunately for the Blue Jackets, Laine is 100% not amongst them.

It’s highly unlikely that Columbus would let Laine, ergo Dubois, walk for nothing, but due to the timeline of this season, it is a possibility. The NHL trade deadline is a little over two months away and the front office needs to monitor Laine closely. If his heart isn’t invested in the team, they’ll need to make a decision and soon.

If I’m Columbus, I’m trying to lock Laine down for at least a two-year deal. The last thing you want to do is scramble and lose yet another young star…

Spoiler alert. If he's not signed to an extension before, they will qualify and protect him.

This no talent ass clown can delete everything after that.

Laine has 'tough' debut with Blue Jackets in loss

Forward eager to settle in, shoot more after not scoring point against Stars

Patrik Laine's much-anticipated Columbus Blue Jackets debut didn't go as well as he hoped.

Laine and the Blue Jackets started slowly before their third-period comeback fell short in a 6-3 loss to the Dallas Stars at Nationwide Arena in Columbus on Tuesday.

"It was tough at the beginning," the forward said after his first game since being traded from the Winnipeg Jets on Jan. 23. "The legs weren't quite there. My head was definitely not there. My hands were not there. And, obviously, a new system and linemates. But I'm not here to make excuses. I think I wasn't at the level I need to be for this team to be able to win."

Playing for the first time in 19 days, Laine did not score a point; he had two shots on goal, seven shot attempts and a minus-2 rating in 20:54 of ice time. He said he hopes to feel more comfortable when the Blue Jackets play the Stars again here Thursday.

"I've had one morning skate with the team and that's it," Laine said. "So it's not the ideal situation, but that's these circumstances. But it will be a really big team practice for me tomorrow [to] work on things and watch video for the new systems and how I played today. So it will be a good day tomorrow."

Still turds.

Laine and Roslovic are a lot of fun to watch. Koivu is a perfect Center to compliment Jenner and Foligno. Domi has been solid as well. Have to admit the trade, coupled with the off-season moves they’ve made have me pretty optimistic. Just need the defense to come along and we’ll be cooking.

Also, the “Reverse Retro” jerseys can fuck right off.
