Columbus mayor wants NBA franchise

Mayor Michael B. Coleman has told the NBA that Columbus wants a basketball team now that the ink is dry on the public purchase of Nationwide Arena. Coleman sent NBA Commissioner David Stern a letter last Thursday expressing the city?s desire to move a franchise here or add a new team if the league expands.

I'm all for a second professional franchise coming to Columbus. It would be the Sacramento Kings franchise, if they decide to relocate and choose CMH.

My own off-topic posts aside. Since the backdoor dealings of Mayor Coleman have forced us to fund an arena that we voted against, we might as well try to get more out of it, and get an NBA team to Columbus. Cleveland won't like it one bit, and who can tell if Cincy will support it, but I would still like to see it happen. There are a lot of places in Ohio where it's just too long of a drive to go see a game in Cleveland, and having a team in Columbus would open up the NBA to a large portion of Western and Southern Ohio.

Not to be contrarian, what makes people think pro basketball would draw dick in Columbus? Even the Buckeyes have trouble filling the arena when they're playing well and it's a college and football town. The Jackets don't draw, the Crew don't draw anywhere near what they once did...

Yeah, I don't see this actually ending well, should it occur.

It will be talked about- "Oh yeah, I'd love to go to a game in Columbus!" In actuality- "Meh, not tonight..."

Cincy won't support it. It is very provincial and more of a college basketball town anyway. There's already an NBA team about the same distance from Cincy as Columbus (Indianapolis) and nobody here gives a shit about the Pacers. The Cavs are further away, but they're on TV here at least and nobody besides me gives a shit about them either.

As an Ohio State fan and a Cavs fan, I wouldn't want to see this happen. An NBA team in Columbus would forever be in Ohio State's shadow, but would probably draw just enough money and attention to inflict a little harm on the Buckeyes.

From my perspective, the only positive thing I see out of something like this is that it would serve as a shiny object to distract some of the Central Ohio jocksniffers that keep causing problems for the Buckeyes.

Finally, the last thing the NBA needs is yet another team in flyover country.

I am opposed for this very reason. If Columbus ever gets an NBA franchise taxpayer dollars will be used as an incentive.

Both teams did draw well, at first. I believe the Blue Jackets would still draw good crowds if they hadn't been completely incompetent. Economic downturn combined with piss poor performance is what killed Jackets' attendance. The Crew are simply not in a good league. They're a middle of the road franchise in a league that is very slowly building the quality of play, but is still way behind all of the leagues that we can watch on television. The MLS is basically the UFL when it comes to quality of play.

"Cincy won't support it" is something I was thinking, but I didn't want to pigeon hole the entire city.

The Jackets don't draw because they've been one of the worst teams in the league their entire existence. Their attendance wasn't bad the first few years and during the playoff run. The MLS is hurt by the fact that there are many, many sports fans who simply don't care about soccer. The NBA is one of the top three sports. Hard to compare it to soccer (and hockey, as much as I hate to say it). It should draw better.

I'd like to see the NBA here, but I'd prefer if the Cavs just moved here.
