Dan Wheldon killed in crash

My fraternity brothers and I used to have this fun pool where we'd get up early on Sunday and for a buck or 2 we'd draw a drivers name out of a hat and if they won you got the pool.

In '94 we were at our friends house in UA, I don't remember why, but, this tradition was his Dad's, and the Dad was excited we were all there to play the game with him. So, at some ungodly hour my buddy's Dad was kicking our hungover arses awake on the couches in his basement and shaking us down for money. We were all Shumacher fans back then, but, he'd been drawn already, so I was hoping to maybe get Mika Hakkinen, as he was always good at staying out of trouble and winning by staying on the course.

Drew Ayrton Senna that morning who I was no fan of but was the pole sitter... , and 20 minutes later he was killed at Imola. Terrible day.

CART and Indy has split that year too, and that was kind of the end of my interest in big time racing, as I see little skill in turning left.

I do like to catch some rally racing once in a while on Speed... you know the cheapy dar stuff with the navigator... that's fun stuff.

That's kind of my thoughts on racing in general. NASCAR just pisses me off. It's a godsend for redneck's everywhere.

I don't know how legitimate this Twitter account is, but it's supposedly a reporter from a local Fox affiliate in Vegas.

theres going to be a press conference announcing whats happened to dan wheldon... its not going to be good from what weve heardtheres going to be a press conference announcing whats happened to dan wheldon... its not going to be good from what weve heard

A press conference would not be good.

Well... I'm hoping for the best. I don't follow it anymore as I mentioned but, it's a dangerous business... best wishes to Wheldon and his family whatever the outcome.

Eh, I actually think there are a lot of talented drivers in that series... I just don't think the actual cars/format let it express itself well.

Well, Its terribly sad.

I will say this though, this was a young man who did indeed understand in that Nikki Lauda kind of way that when you're a race driver, the hair is everything.

Godspeed to him.

RIP. Horribly sad day.

This ranks up there with Dale Earnhardt as one of the most talented drivers to lose their lives competing in the hobby they loved.

For the drivers and crews who are on the road as much as these people are, and not to mention how much they are paid, it's not anything like a "hobby"....
