DB Cameron Burrows (Official Thread)

Free Rivals - Extra-early commitments on the rise

Cameron Burrows is one of the top high school football recruits in his class. The type of player that could go to the school of his choice. The type of player schools hold scholarships for.

But after visiting Ohio State earlier this month, the Trotwood (Ohio) Trotwood-Madison High cornerback told BuckeyeGrove.com and others there was no need to look around anymore. He verbally committed to the school on Jan. 19.

"There wasn't any reason to wait," Burrows told an audience at his announcement press conference.

It's not unusual for athletes to verbally commit to colleges before they officially sign a Letter of Intent during their senior year on National Signing Day, which always falls on the first Wednesday of February.

Burrows' decision, however, was a bit unusual. It came more than a year before his Signing Day. Burrows is just a junior and a member of the Class of 2013.

Burrows announcement is part of a growing trend in recruiting - the extra-early commitment.

Luckily for Burrows, he's got someone covering him: His coach, Maurice Douglas.

"I'm going to tell everybody that he's off limits," Douglass told BuckeyeGrove.com. "He's (Ohio State's) until they show that they don't want him. They don't have to worry about another guy coming in and sneaking in and trying to back door them."

That's a huge defensive backfield. These two to go along with the smaller corners in Doran and Armani will be scary.

Film looks like a safety to me. I'm sure he has the hips for CB but could not really tell. Limited back peddle in the film. I'm sure the staff has seen him camp and run drills. Great tackling. Great Buckeye commit.

When I look at Burrows I can't help but think of the Eric Berry situation at Tenn. He can athletically play corner and be very effective, but his overall contribution to the defense and team may be greater at FS. Wouldn't surprise me at which position he ended up. With our other good young corners coming in it is some nice flexibility to have.

I agree one hundred percent with this. Berry was probably athletic enough for corner, but was such a playmaker at safety that you had to put him there. Similarly, the Buckeyes would place Jenkins at a centerfield safety position when in nickel to take advantage of his playmaking skills. I can see Burrows following the Berry path because he is going to most likely get bigger and has the athleticism to truly range the field.

Buckeyes commit Burrows not slowing down now

Some would wonder what is left to keep cornerback Cam Burrows motivated. He helped lead Trotwood-Madison to its first undefeated season and state championship this fall. He is committed to the home state program and the team he grew up loving in Ohio State. To top it off, he is ranked No. 21 in the ESPN 150.

But Burrows knows it only takes an instant for all of that to slip away.

"Anything can happen, nothing is a given," the 6-1, 195-pound cornerback said. "I got to go out there and keep working hard. Just because I know I'm going somewhere right now doesn't mean it's always going to stay like that. I have to go out there and play every game."

Football has been put on the shelf for now for Burrows, though, as he is running several events for the track team. He still tries to work out with some of his teammates when he can on Fridays by just doing some simple defensive back drills.

His eye is still on the gridiron, though, specifically the one about 90 minutes east on Interstate 70. Burrows, the first member of the Buckeyes' 2013 class, is Ohio State's most active recruiter and has been instrumental in bringing in Ohio State's other seven commitments.

"I've been very involved recruiting," said Burrows, who will enroll early. "Every person who committed in the 2013 class I've talked to before they committed and I still talk to them, and I'm still working on others."

Burrows still makes it up to Columbus as often as he can when track is not in the way. He was last up there on April 5 to watch a spring practice and noticed a difference in the team under Urban Meyer. Burrows saw his share of Buckeyes games and practices over the past few seasons, but he said the vibe is much more positive this spring.

With Meyer installing a new offense, Burrows said the unit is struggling a bit in drills, which he admits he is a little happy to see.

"The defense was kind of kicking butt," Burrows said, laughing.
