DC/LB Coach Jim Knowles (Official Thread)

Yep, it’s all about people right. If we want a coach that’s a CEO then they need to find the right guys. But, that doesn’t mean those guys are absolved of their fuckups.

Ironically, since Cooper has been brought up by many of us in comparison (me included), I recall Cooper taking a huge amount of shit for talking about his role as head coach was to coach the coaches.

He did indeed say that and get ridiculed for it. I think it's more about the results he had than the approach.

Coach the coaches is what Saban does.

Start by watching last year’s Game, Jim. And maybe 20-30 more this offseason. Finding out he didn’t see last year’s is a Buckeye crime

Overall think he did well to improve the defense. Much better scheme, positioning, team defense. But that all got erased in the biggest Game this year so he can’t be graded a winner yet.

I expect even more from him next year with the roster he has coming back. It needs to all build towards the best performance of the year when it matters.

I thought Ash was solid. Now he has even greater experience and understands BIG football and the game.
No. Hard pass.

That said I'm growing more irritated by the day with our defense from the game. I thought it was weird at the time but now I'm pretty alarmed that Jim didn't watch last year. Excuse me? You didn't care to fully immerse yourself in this rivalry? Didn't bother to see how we attacked last year?

What If we attacked ttun exactly how we did this past Saturday Jim? You'd had known a thing or two to do differently.

That wasn't the case but doesn't a defensive coordinator making 2 mil a year owe it to leave nothing unturned? All that time in the off season and you didn't bother to check in on the one team you can't lose to?

I actually am a big fan of Jim's but damn not even studying last year is just dumb.

Why hard pass on Ash. Buckeyes we’re solid on D with him.

Right now I see a BIG 12 D in big games.

I get why he didn't watch it preseason didn't want to prejudice himself against players. But mid-season he should have broken out that film and analysed their tendencies.

I fell like he was so worried about chasing ghosts he didn't do enough prep

You need more than cover 4 in football today. Plus he's not that great of a recruiter.

Great thing about Knowles is he will play any coverage and will bring any blitz from anywhere. He got a first class lesson on what being over aggressive can mean and I don't anticipate Jim having a game plan like that again.

The last two weeks were terrible game plans I will say that. Against Maryland we played too passive and vs ttun we played too aggressive.

Okay, we’ll see what Knowles does moving forward. I haven’t seen him be responsible for 1 recruit yet.

Very true on his recruiting chops. Missed on his only target too.

Very important that Jim either A) starts to recruit well or B) continues producing top 10 defenses. Personally I'm cool with a recruiting liability if they are an excellent coordinator/coach.

I think it was well known that he wasn’t brought in to be a recruiter, he was brought in to improve the defense. And in essence he did. He said he would allow 3-5 big plays a game, and he did all season. But he stopped the opposing team the rest of the game. I heard that outside of the 5 massive plays against scUM, they only had less than 150yds all game. Players didn’t make stops in space.

I also am not a fan of bringing back re-hires and thinking the sound of the old band will be the same. Ash was great at the time he was at OSU, and his time has passed.
