DC/LB Coach Jim Knowles (Official Thread)

I would say Hafley is safe at BC, for at least another year.

Leonard, I would imagine, will have a lot of suitors but I also think it's clear he wants to be a HC and OSU would make that launching pad more easily than Illinois or wherever else.

If we had to extend the list, here would be two others I'd be very interested in:

Phil Parker, Iowa DC - NE OH born and raised (Amherst) so I'd imagine he grew up a Buckeye fan. Plus, doesn't he have to eventually get tired of that dog shit offense!?

D'Anton Lynn, UCLA DC - Rising young star in the industry very, very similar to Jeff Hafley. 34 years old, NFL coaching experience, Texas roots. With Chip Kelly on shaky ground this would make for a natural stepping stone to the good guys.
He is 60. Only two years older than our current DC, but he's getting up there.

So much better this year and you could physically see it. I was never worried about the Defense and I couldn't say that in years past. When a team actually got a good drive against us this year it was a surprise not a "here we go again" moment. The stats bear all of that out but everyone is focusing on the one big game that mattered. They didnt have a bad game, they just didnt go win the game. I knew the football gods were going to fuck us the moment we had JJ hemmed in on a rollout and about to get the ball back when he passed back late over the middle and we had it played perfectly but they had a guy make a diving against the grain catch for just enough yards and a first down. We just couldnt get the turnover and late in the game, we didnt have enough juice left and that is because we didnt rotate enough to keep our 1st team fresh. There is no excuses for that either because they actually huddled every time giving us plenty of time to move in and out. If the coaches aren't all seeing eye to eye with the Defensive Coordinator, we need new coaches. This guy gets paid to run the entire defense and we can't have any mutinous miscreants throwing a monkey wrench into the works, even if it's a hall of famer doing itl

Agree with the first part. Disagree with the second.

You are either getting better or you are getting worse.

What is the trend line since 2019?

Better question would be has the defense improved since Knowles was hired. And the answer is a resounding yes.

I'm not sure what Greg Mattison and Kerry Coombs defenses have to do with anything, other than making irrelevant points.

Note that I'm not saying they can't improve.... they can. And they will. Just like everywhere else Knowles has ever coached. His defenses get better every year. He has a track record, the stats are there for you to see.

Failing in The Game but in a different way is big progress?

I’ll give you that it’s better versus Indiana and Sparty etc. if people want to celebrate that, don’t let me stop you.

DL is weak and recruiting there isn’t in a positive track. Knowles isn’t the biggest problem though. His boss is.

But but the defensive rankings and the stats. Never mind I’m just gonna stop here….call me when a Knowles defense stops a team with a pulse…and please spare me the ND and PSU arguments

Guys, there is something very unique about Michigan, and bc of it, people really should take a deep breath and back off the ledge a bit.

Michigan is projected to have (7) offensive lineman taken in the upcoming draft. That isn’t a typo….its actually LOL funny when u think about it. There’s a reason they trotted out (7) man offensive lines on a regular basis.

This team was designed to be old, tough, physical, and built to wear down good college teams.

The good news is, barring an unforeseen pandemic, we won’t see an offensive line this good in probably forever.

Again, I think people need to take more of a 20,000 foot approach here rather than isolating a single half against an insanely veteran and experienced football team. They’ve won the battle for the last few years, and it sucks, but they aren’t going to win the long term war. The overall health of our programs couldn’t be any more night and day. The pain right now fucking sucks, but all is not lost here. We are in great shape for future….(2) of the current top (4) teams in rankings cannot say same thing.

Im not all in that it will collapse. The transfer portal isn't going anywhere.
I guess he can fight Deion for most transfers.
They're still going to be able to build old man rosters.
Almost every post in the transfer thread is for grad students.

Kids that were on campus in 2020 still have the Covid loophole year. Each year we get further away from 2020, that number shrinks.

I say Michigans window closes after 2023 season because the kids graduate transfers they can bring in are minimized to 1 season in most cases. And 1 year rentals is not nearly as beneficial as transfers that get at least 1 season in system and the weight and conditioning.

Ignore the stats. I get that the B1G doesn't have elite offenses. Coverage was better, their success in limiting big plays was incredible, the secondary was great. The main issues were lack of pressure and how the LBs fit in the running game.

OSU did what they couldn't do and got down to Michigan. We knew that if they got the lead it would be very difficult to dictate the game. The defense didn't win the game, but they did give the offense a chance at the end. They also only gave up 330 yards, so they weren't letting Michigan constantly drive the field.

What do you gain by firing Knowles after a huge jump in year 2? Michigan has had a 3 year resurgence by cheating and using the transfer portal. Two unsustainable things. Maybe they get hammered by sanctions, maybe not. You can hate Day and the staff for not figuring things out, but panicking and turning over a defense that's finally improved and found some stability is counterproductive.
