DE Lawrence Wilson (official thread)

tOSU are at his game tonight.
I am in Akron for work and picked up the local sports sections whilst in the hotel lobby. There was a nice write up of his game from yesterday so I don't think he played again today.<O:p</O:p

He led the team in scoring and he was the focus of the article. Appears he is quite the baller. No mention of his college recruitment in the piece, but it was a glowing review of his ability.<O:p</O:p

I hope OSU gets this kid, he sounds like an incredible athlete.

I don't know what to think on Lawrence. I'd love to see him at tOSU, but I think ND & Michigan are definately in the picture.

I'd say we have about a 50% chance on him, if that. Really hope we get him though, that'd be a great way to finish off an already outstanding defensive line class.

St. V-M balance topples Euclid

Wilson inside, Nygaard outside lead Irish to win
By David Lee Morgan Jr.
Beacon Journal staff writer

Whenever St. Vincent-St. Mary needed to establish the inside game, there was 6-foot-6, 240-pound center Lawrence Wilson. The area underneath the basket belonged to him.

Whenever the Irish needed to score from the perimeter, there was sharp-shooting junior guard Patrick Nygaard lighting it up from the outside.

And when the Irish needed someone to do both -- score from the inside and also hit the outside jumpers -- there was 6-3 guard Marcus Johnson.

All three players were solid in leading the Irish to a 75-55 win over visiting Euclid on Monday night.

Wilson led the top-ranked Division II team in Ohio with 22 points, 12 rebounds and was 8-of-9 from the free-throw line. Nygaard and Johnson scored 17 points apiece for the Irish (11-1), who play tonight in Youngstown against Cardinal Mooney.

``Honestly, we just have guys who do what they do,'' Irish coach Dru Joyce II said about his top three players. ``Pat hit his shots when we got him the ball, Lawrence was very effective playing down low on the blocks, Marcus can create on his own and the rest of the guys filled in the blanks.''

Nygaard finished with five 3-pointers.

``I don't really look for my shot but with Marcus and Lawrence down low, as soon as they start double-teaming them, they kick it back out to me and I'm wide open,'' he said.

Johnson said his game is all about creating.

``I'd rather drive than shoot the jumper because I'm a strong finisher,'' he said. Johnson finished with eight rebounds.

As for Lawrence, he never let up inside.

``It's important for me to establish my game early so that it can open things up for the rest of the guys outside.''

Euclid (6-6) has an outstanding post player in 6-4 junior forward Desmond Motley. He led the Panthers with 16 points and eight rebounds and was the only Euclid player to score in double figures. Motley scored 10 points in the first half.

``We were allowing them to get away with certain things in the first half, and Motley was making a lot of shots,'' Joyce said. ``He finished with 16 points and had we allowed him to continue what he was doing in the second half; he could've scored more.''

St. V-M led 29-24 at halftime but its defense tightened as the Irish outscored Euclid 21-13 in the third quarter and led 50-37 heading into the final period.

Joyce said another defensive key to the game was not allowing Panthers senior guard John Dickinson to catch fire from the outside. Dickinson finished with seven points.

``When I scouted them, Dickinson was their main outside shooter and he had a good game,'' Joyce said. ``I challenged our guys not to let Dickinson have a good game. We felt that if he (Dickinson) didn't have a big game, Motley wasn't going to get enough to beat us.''

Any of you Akronites have a feel for what the kids at St. V-M think, generally, about tOSU?

There just seems to me to be something holding Lawrence back from becoming a Buckeye. His brother's at tOSU and he and his parents had a terrific dinner meeting with JT, yet he seems unwilling to pull the trigger for some reason. As if he's hoping somebody else will come along and blow him away -- which is fine -- but seems curious to me given everything else tOSU can offer him.
I'm wondering if the Buckeye program's not popular at St. V-M ...if there's some resentment about how tOSU treated LeBron's boy Maurice or something. Any insights?

Great point. I do believe the Wilson's are taking their time to make the best decision for Lawrence. However I also wonder if something is holding him back from a buckeye committment. I don't believe the Wilson's have mentioned the possible NCAA sanctions, but maybe that's their concern.

The general thought is positive toward OSU, but you have to remember that the school's nickname is the Fighting Irish and there is the connection, imaginary or otherwise, with Notre Dame. As NJ-Buckeye will attest, the alumni base at St. V is pretty ND dominant and loyal. Hell, I rooted as much for ND in high school as OSU because I knew the Stams family and he was at ND while I was at St. V.

St. V has always had a decent football program, but they have not sent a lot of kids on to play at the major schools. Since the early 80's and before Sian Cotton I can only think of two players who went on to big college careers. Frank Stams went to ND and Jason Simmons went to OSU. It is harder to get a read on where the school's emphasis is when they are not a huge pipeline of major D1 talent for football.

You also have to remember that Wilson and his family seem to be very focused on academics as much, if not more, than athletics. I believe his brother is at OSU on an academic scholarship (Please correct me if I am wrong). There are a lot of successful St. V grads that can tell Lawrence how well they have done in life and it is due to them graduating from ND. I'm not sure if that is the case with St. V alums that are also OSU grads.

According to a recruiting rundown by the site "insiders," Lawrence is basically between tOSU and ND. Distance will probably take UF out of consideration. This is all specualtion by the staff, but Lawrence is slightly concerned with allegations against tOSU and is not comfortable with the new ND staff. The author does conced that unless ND coaches can relieve the doubts in Wilson's mind, he will choose another school.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame wants to make sure that a high school defensive end from Ohio knows he's wanted in South Bend.

Seven coaches showed up at Lawrence Wilson's home in Akron, Ohio, on Sunday. That's the maximum number of coaches allowed on the road recruiting at one time.

The 6-6, 235-pound Wilson plays at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School. He committed to play for Notre Dame, but decommitted when Tyrone Willingham was fired.

Ohio State, Florida and Michigan immediately began recruiting him.

Wilson's mother, Sarah Wilson, says the visit was overwhelming.

On Monday, four Ohio State coaches visited and later a Florida coach stopped.

Wilson is scheduled to visit Michigan later this week.

Polian is the one who scares me here...he is supposedly ND's best recruiter on the new staff and he has obviously made Lawrence Wilson a priority since coming to South Bend...
