DE/LB Thaddeus Gibson (official thread)

Linebackers (9)

Looking good: OLBs Bryan Orakpo, Ryan Kerrigan, Rob Jackson, Lorenzo Alexander and ILBs London Fletcher, Rocky McIntosh, Perry Riley and Keyaron Fox all appear to be set.

On the bubble: ILB Horatio Blades and OLBs Markus White, Thaddeus Gibson, Edgar Jones, Eric McBride.

Thoughts: Blades appears to be on his way out after coming to camp out of shape and has lost his job as Fletcher?s backup to Fox, who also is a strong special teams contributor. White and Gibson likely will wind up on the practice squad.

The Chicago Bears have signed LB Thaddeus Gibson to the practice squad. The 6-2, 243-pound Gibson appeared in two games with the San Francisco 49ers in 2010, registering one forced fumble on special teams, after entering the NFL as a fourth round selection (116th overall) of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2010 NFL Draft.

Gibson spent parts of the 2011 preseason and regular season with the 49ers, Redskins and Texans but did not appear in a regular season game this year.

Bears expected to promote DE Gibson from practice squad
By Brad Biggs, Tribune reporter
December 15, 2011

The Chicago Bears are expected to promote defensive end Thaddeus Gibson from the practice squad to the 53-man roster.

The Bears have contacted Gibson?s agent but he had not signed a contract before 1 p.m., a source told the Tribune.

It?s not known whose roster spot he will take, but the Bears could release wide receiver Sam Hurd after sweeping federal drug charges were made against him.

The Bears converted Gibson, a fourth-round pick from Ohio State last year by the Pittsburgh Steelers, to defensive end. He had been playing linebacker.

Another young player Smith indicated had earned some attention was defensive end Thaddeus Gibson, who had played with the Texans.

Gibson joined the practice squad last November but was elevated to the active roster at season's end. He displayed some outstanding moves during pass-rush drills, then flashed his speed during the scrimmage.

"His gift has never been a question," veteran defensive end Israel Idonije said. "The guy has got some God-given ability that very few have. ... He was just putting on a clinic."

I thought Thad was turning heads at Steelers camp his rookie season right after he was drafted? Hope he catches on, he was lots of fun to watch.

I remember reading those reports too. Might be a guy who shines in practice but disappears in games. I'm definitely surprised he hasn't caught on as at least a solid back-up somewhere.
