DE Will Smith (National Champion, Super Bowl Champion, Pro-bowler; R.I.P.)

Photos: A Look Back at Will Smith's Time as a Buckeye

Will Smith came to Ohio State as a highly-regarded defensive end prospect from the state of New York. When he left Ohio State, he was even more highly regarded, and those who knew him would probably tell you that it had nothing to do with his play on the field.

Nothing that is said or done here can ease the pain of his loss, but we thought it would be a gesture of respect for his years as a Buckeye to look back at his time in the Scarlet and Gray.

Our thoughts today are with the Smith family.

Will Smith and the Buckeyes never let up on quarterback John Navarre in the 2002 Michigan game.

Life and death happen, but this shit really gets you straight in the beans. Takes me back to the shock of Korey's death.

Will wait to get the whole story as it's fed to us, but there are just so many strange issues with this shooting. The former cop dinner partner as a defendant to a wrongful death suit over the shooter's father, the fact that he worked for the Saints, even the thin connection through football itself. Maybe it's just a random road-rage killing, but there's a lot of smoke here. Thing is, no explanation is going to make it any less a tragedy.

Tired of this kind of crap.

Beyond tired of it. The reason I stopped watching the news years ago: it's always a horror story for someone, whether you knew of their life before the event or not. But this, of course, hits much closer to home.

This story already reads like an episode of Law and Order. What are the odds you would even know a cop who shot the father of someone else you knew? The connections are beyond strange. And if it turns out to have been for revenge, it will only be that much sadder. Some of the most senseless murders have been deranged acts of vengeance.

Suspect arrested in death of former Saints DE Will Smith

Hayes is not guilty of murder, Fuller (the suspect's attorney) said. "The story that's real is different from the story that's being put out there," he said.

Fuller said Hayes ran into the back of Smith's Mercedes while following a hit-and-run driver who had rear-ended his Humvee and sped off. Fuller wouldn't say whether Hayes identified the Mercedes as that vehicle.

Hayes called 911 after he was hit and convinced a witness who was about to leave to remain and talk to police, Fuller said.
