Inkster QB Devin Gardner wants more games before U-M

BY MICK MCCABE
FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

This isn?t the way Devin Gardner?s high school career was supposed to end - on some remote football field in Ohio, five hours away and just a stone?s throw from West Virginia.

The Inkster senior, who knocked them dead at the Elite Eleven quarterback camp this summer, had visions of returning to Ford Field again next month to try to accomplish what he nearly did last year, win a state championship.

But unless Gardner leads Inkster to an upset of Steubenville tonight, odds are he won?t play another game of football until Rich Rodriguez is his coach in his freshman year at Michigan next fall.

?I feel like we can get it done, that?s how I feel,? Gardner said. ?I know they don?t lose at home. Coach (Greg) Carter showed me their Web site they?ve won 60 in a row at home. I thought they just didn?t lose at home, but they don?t lose in the regular season, either.?

Inkster 6, Lowell 19 2nd qtr 2:43

Just switched it on 5 min ago, Gardner threw a bad INT at midfield on 4th & 1, led to a short field and TD drive by Lowell a minute ago. Inkster went for two and had the pass dropped after their initial score.

Definitely throws a better ball than Pryor did in HS, but also does not have the same kind of speed. He's more physical and slippery (like TP) than he is fast.
Tate's days are clearly numbered.
A promising drive for Inkster stalls at the 40 after some imprecise passes.

Gardner gets surrounded by 3 tacklers, who stays upright and throws up a jumpbaltdownfield, which is almost answered by a diving WR downfield.

Recruiting analyst: Michigan-bound QB Devin Gardner more advanced than Terrelle Pryor was
By MARK SNYDER
FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

The state of Michigan has gotten a good look at Inkster quarterback Devin Gardner and his impressive skills.

Now he?ll play on the national stage in the Under Armour All-American High School Football Game on Saturday in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. It will be his final high school showcase before signing with Michigan, to which he is verbally committed.

ESPN Scouts Inc. national recruiting director Tom Luginbill already is sold on him, saying Gardner might even be an advanced version of Ohio State?s Terrelle Pryor.

?Devin has been far more prepared in the passing game and playing in a scheme that has required him to do some things with his arm on a much more consistent basis than Terrelle Pryor ever was,? Luginbill said today in a conference call. ?Terrelle Pryor played in a version of the Wing-T, did not throw the football very much and, quite honestly, was not very efficient throwing the football.

"Going into the next level, Devin Gardner has an advantage there because he has played in a system similar to one he?ll be playing in at Michigan. ... I do think it?s a good fit.

?If you?re a Michigan fan and say we lost out on Terrelle Pryor ? they lost out on a great athlete, but there are no perfect players, and everyone had challenges and things they need to work on. In getting Devin Gardner, you?re actually getting a player with similar physical tools and dimensions but probably further along as a passer.?

Luginbill compares Gardner more to Titans quarterback Vince Young.

?He?s obviously very gifted as a runner and a passer and probably a better passer than he?s given credit for because his mechanics are a bit unorthodox and people see him and make an assumption because it?s not always pretty, he maybe isn?t the passer some guys are,? Luginbill said. ?The bottom line is, the guy?s been exceptionally productive, and he, in my opinion, does a lot of the same things ... to Vince Young. Similar dimensions and measureables, similar arm strength, and a very similar quirky-like delivery.?

Gardner is going to be a special player and will probably put up some huge numbers if he is used correctly. He is only one of the few reasons to get excited for next season. He may struggle next year, but I expect big things out of him in 2011-2013.
