\I'd be fighting overseas when I nearly joined up thinking it wasn't a possibility.

I'm ashamed of it still, but because of it I have a VERY STRONG appreciation for the troops who are protecting this country.

I don't think anyone should ever join the military with no expectation of fighting or going to war. I wanted to choke every reservists whom I heard say, "I didn't join the Army to go to war. I joined for the college money."

That being said, I appreciate your honesty and am glad you didn't realize that too late.

Just found a photo of me just before my retirement:

Damn, I hope my remaining years on active duty aren't THAT rough on me.

This is bound to make a large portion of the board think less of me, oh well:

Why would anyone think less of you?

The military isn't for everyone (for a host of different reasons), and there is certainly no shame in being able to recognize that about yourself.

I'd much rather drink beers with my civilian friends back home who had no interest in joining...than go to war with them if they weren't cut out to be there.

Because I viewed it as a form of paid exercise, then bailed when their was a real need.

I much like others have expressed on this thread dislike hearing complaints about people say 'they entered not realizing they would have to fight'.
Yet, I was a few months away from being one of those people that many board members have expressed disliking.

Perhaps redundant, but would all of the members that have served in the military

post and also list the branch of service you were in, as well as your favorite post/fort/airbase.

Army/ I really enjoyed Fort Huachuca, AZ and Fort Knox, Kentucky was good as well.

Army. Yongsan, South Korea is my favorite Post (I've never been lucky enough to be stationed on the base, but spent many weekends visiting from other shittier Camps in Korea). Fort Lewis is the best Post that I've been assigned to...much due to the fact that it's located right next to McCord Air Force Base, which has outstanding facilities (including a kick-ass Dining Facility that was open 'round the clock).

i was not permitted the honor of serving. i tried to join but was deemed medically unfit.
You have my respect for at least trying to join.

The dining facility ("chow hall" for all us old fucks) here at Hickam is really good, too. Man, I wish they'd allow retirees to eat there...I'd eat breakfast and lunch there every day. You could get a couple eggs, bacon, hash browns, creamed beef, toast, milk, and OJ for about $1.50. The kids on meal cards don't know how good they have it...

I usually say "Mess Hall" or "Chow Hall" when referring to Army Dining Facilities, but I just couldn't bring myself to refer to that McCord facility in that manner. We used to go out drinking, and swing by McCord at 2:00AM and grab some burgers and fries to go with our meal cards instead of having to spend money at someplace like Taco Bell.
