DL Kenny Peterson (official thread)

Great news for Kenny, He is one of my favorite players for that era.

me too. I remember a story about how MoC was talking all kinds of junk before the '03 bcs championship game, about how he was being mistreated etc. and causing a major distraction, and Kenny, grabbed MoC by the throat and put him against a wall and told him to let it go, too many people had worked to hard for him to be a distraction and screw things up for them. MoC kept his mouth shut after that.....for a little while anyway

The Associated Press reports the Denver Broncos announced Friday, July 6, that DL Kenny Peterson has been suspended without pay for the first four games of the season starting Aug. 31. Peterson violated the league's policy on anabolic steroids and related substances. He will be able to join the team for training camp but won't be able to return to the active roster until Oct. 1.

Peterson suspended for taking supplement
Saturday, July 7, 2007

Emphasizing he ?wasn?t being malicious,? Denver Broncos defensive end Kenny Peterson said Friday that use of an over-the-counter supplement caused him to violate the NFL?s steroid policy.

The Broncos released an NFL statement Friday saying the former Ohio State University and McKinley High School star will miss the first four games of the season and be suspended without pay for the violation. The statement said Peterson had violated the policy on anabolic steroids and related substances but didn?t specify what he had done.

Speaking exclusively with The Repository on Friday afternoon, Peterson said he used a metabolic supplement, not an anabolic steroid. He thought he was using a natural supplement from a nutrition store, but admitted to making the mistake of not getting it cleared through the NFL.

The NFL not only prohibits anabolic-androgenic steroids ? man-made substances related to the male sex hormone testosterone ? but also some over-the-counter dietary supplements containing prohibited substances.

?I would never do anything to jeopardize my career or the integrity of the game,? Peterson said. ?I think what I got was a bad supply. I stopped taking it. Whatever it was, it was obviously a bad dose of it. I don?t want this to tarnish my character or what I stand for. I tell kids not to use drugs and to play fair. I don?t want anybody to think I?m a cheater. I?m far from a cheater.

?I still have never drank and never smoked. I?ve never taken drugs, and I never will. That bothers me about this whole situation. I don?t want people to stick me with the stigma of being a drug guy. I?m far from a drug guy.?

The recent news that former Ohio State and McKinley High School star Kenny Peterson violated the NFL's steroid policy was, initially, troubling. Peterson is trying to make a career out of the NFL and is one of those players on the bubble of making the Denver Broncos roster as a defensive end.

According to a statement released by the team, Peterson will be suspended without pay beginning Aug. 31 and be eligible to return on Oct. 1.

Peterson seemed genuinely upset during a phone conversation Friday about the whole incident. He made it clear, several times, he didn't take an anabolic steroid.

"It was metabolic ... and it was something I got over the counter from a nutrition store," Peterson said.

He said he didn't clear the supplement through the league's program because he's been lifting and working out his whole life.

The NFL randomly tests players every week during the season. Peterson estimated he's had at least 25 clean tests during his NFL career and this was the first time a test came back with something in it.

Peterson will miss four game checks during his suspension, which is in the neighborhood of $200,000.

"I don't want anybody to think I'm a cheater. I'm far from a cheater," Peterson said. "I don't want this to tarnish my character or what I stand for."

Why do I believe Peterson?

Because there are plenty of players who test positive for steroids, and the league wasn't clear on what kind of positive test he had, and those players never comment on the suspension.

Peterson is paying price for mistake
By Jeff Legwold, Rocky Mountain News
July 10, 2007

Shanahan declined to say what specifically brought the suspension, but said: "Sometimes it's not a conscious mistake. You take the wrong supplement; a guy might not know he's making a mistake and he makes one. It just takes one slip-up. You slip up just once, you're going to pay the price. You're responsible for what goes in your body, that's the bottom line."

I don't think we'll ever know for certain whether it was an "honest" (albeit careless) mistake, or a risky attempt to beat the drug-testing system. Unfortunately, the ones who make careless mistakes do end up sounding similar to those who blatanty cheat and get caught.

Like Shanahan said, guys have to be responsible for what they put into their bodies.

The Broncos also released a pair of players on Saturday -- fullback Thump Belton and defensive end Kenny Peterson. Belton was on the team's practice squad last December and became the subject of an on-line fan-driven "Free Thump Belton" movement on a Broncos-related message board. Peterson, meanwhile, was set to serve a four-game league suspension for violation of the NFL's policy on anabolic steroids.
