DL Kenny Peterson (official thread)

Peterson's back

Defensive lineman Kenny Peterson returned to the team Monday after serving a four-game suspension for violating the league's steroid policy. The team has one week to have Peterson practice with a roster exemption before keeping him and cutting another player, or releasing Peterson. The team likes Peterson because he can play both inside and outside, and his size. Peterson worked out daily locally during his suspension.

"I had to stay in the shape," he said. "This league is not for slouches."

Defensive lineman Kenny Peterson, who was suspended four games for violating the NFL?s policy on anabolic steroids and related substances, was reinstated Monday. The Broncos have a week to decide whether to release Peterson or put him on the active roster.
?We?ll see what type of shape he?s in compared to the other players and make a decision,? Shanahan said.

Broncos Peterson looking for redemption
Peterson eager to restore playing status, reputation
Dennis Schroeder ? The Rocky

ENGLEWOOD - Kenny Peterson wants his old job back. And his good name, too.
Suspended four games by the NFL for violating the policy on steroids and related substances, the defensive lineman has returned this week to the Broncos.

And while he awaits the Broncos' decision on whether to shift him to the active roster - they have until Monday - the status of his reputation weighs heavy.

"For a guy like myself who has never drank, never smoked, ever my entire life, to be suspended for an illegal substance, it kind of hurt me because I try to be a role model to everybody back at home and all the kids and stuff like that," said Peterson, who makes his home in Columbus, Ohio, and has a young daughter.

"And with the position God put me in, it's very disheartening because I don't want anybody to think - and more so the kids - that I'm a hypocrite, which I'm not whatsoever."

Peterson previously hasn't discussed his misstep publicly, but he offered details Monday after a Broncos conditioning session.

He insisted no injectable drugs were involved.

"I'm not fond of needles," Peterson said, laughing. "And furthermore, anybody who knows Kenny Peterson knows I'm not that type of guy."

He said a pill to boost metabolism containing a banned substance was the culprit that led to the suspension.

"It was a situation where I wasn't careful about what I was putting into my body. And what was done wasn't done maliciously," Peterson said. "I wasn't cognizant of what was actually in there and I should have paid attention rather than being so nonchalant about it."

Peterson recounted the lonely feeling sitting apart from teammates and thinking about what he could have done to prevent the situation.

"But I'm opening a new chapter and it's behind me," he said. "And I really don't want to go back to it."

And no wonder. Peterson lost $140,000 in wages during his four-week forced absence. He still is on the reserve/suspended list.

Though he hasn't played since the Broncos' preseason finale Aug. 30 against the Arizona Cardinals, he had built a solid base after participating in team drills all summer.

And the Broncos' assistant head coach/defense, Jim Bates, spoke highly at the time of the Peterson's chances of entering the front-four rotation.

"I'm not saying I'm the next coming or whatever, but I'd like to contribute," said Peterson, who has worked out daily during the suspension. "Right now, I've got to go out and show what I can bring to the table and go from there."

During the first month of the season, the defensive front has been in flux and has struggled, particularly against the run.

Peterson can play inside and out, providing needed versatility.

"I've got a history with coach Bates and this scheme and it's fantastic," said Peterson, a third-round pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2003 who played under Bates in his third pro season. "It's a scheme that can shut down the run and, obviously, shut down the pass, as you can see. We've just got to play the scheme like we know how and it'll be all right."

Peterson is used to joining the Broncos midstream. He played in three games for the Broncos last season after joining the team in October after Courtney Brown suffered a season-ending left knee injury.

"From a personal standpoint, I thought I had a pretty good camp," he said of his chances of sticking for another year. "But the league's 'What have you done for me lately.' "

ENGLEWOOD - The Broncos released defensive end/tackle Kenny Peterson when his league-sanctioned roster exemption ran out Monday.
Peterson, who had been suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the league's policy on steroids and related substances, practiced with the team last week under a roster exemption so the Broncos could gauge if they wanted to add him to the 53-man roster.

The Broncos will have another roster spot open in the coming days when they formally move defensive end Jarvis Moss to injured reserve. Moss fractured his right lower leg in practice Thursday and also suffered ligament damage to his right ankle.

Moss was not moved to injured reserve Friday. As of Friday, the Broncos were expected to wait until after the game Sunday to sign a player.

Kenny Peterson, who has had several workouts in recent weeks, including in Oakland this week, is unsigned. The Broncos practiced him at end and tackle before releasing him earlier this season.

But the ranks of unsigned defensive linemen are considered thin throughout the league

Broncos continue D-line shuffle, re-sign DE Peterson

Posted: November 13, 2007

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) -- The Denver Broncos reshuffled their defensive line again Tuesday by re-signing Kenny Peterson and waiving second-year tackle Antwon Burton.

Last week, the Broncos released end Simeon Rice and tackle Amon Gordon and signed three free-agent defensive ends.

Peterson is a fifth-year defensive end whom the Broncos released Oct. 8 after he served a four-game suspension for violating the league's drug policy. He said he took a supplement that contained a banned ingredient.

Peterson originally signed with the Broncos last season and played in three games. He was a third-round draft choice of the Green Bay Packers in 2003 out of Ohio State. He has played in 37 career games and has three sacks.

Broncos Kenny Peterson Hoping to Stay on Roster

ENGLEWOOD - Kenny Peterson has been cut and signed by the Broncos four times this season.
He's hoping his latest move onto the Broncos roster will be the last one for a while.

Peterson was re-signed by the Broncos on Tuesday.

It's been a wild season for the fifth-year defensive end, waiting and hoping for phone calls from Shanahan seeking his services.

He was suspended in July for violating the league's steroid policy. And was cut and re-signed on back-to-back days later that month.

With the change in the defensive scheme, Shanahan thought Peterson might fit once again.

Shanahan says Peterson has a little bit more experience with what the team is doing defensively -- so the Broncos are going to give him a shot.

And Peterson says, that's all he wants.

PETERSON BACK IN DENVER

For the third time this season, the Denver Broncos signed Kenny Peterson. The former McKinley and OSU standout played a great deal in Monday?s game and may have had his best game as a pro, but it didn?t show in the final stat report. Peterson stoned Titan running back Lendell White on a run that didn?t count because Tennessee was penalized. He was credited with a quarterback hurry.

Peterson was re-signed as the Broncos tinker with their defensive line. He gives them flexibility because he can play inside or out, but Denver looked to work him more at tackle than end in his first game.

Step forward

It has been a long season for Kenny Peterson.

The Broncos defensive lineman was suspended for the first four games, then released, rejoining Denver for the Nov. 19 game against the Tennessee Titans.

In only is second week back, Peterson made his presence known as a tackle in the Broncos' front-four rotation.

He led all Broncos linemen with five tackles, added one sack and one pass defensed. He also ran nearly 20 yards in pursuit to make one of his stops in the open field on Bears running back Adrian Peterson.

"I'm just trying to contribute as much as I can. I feel good about playing again. Do I feel refreshed? Absolutely," Peterson said

DE?s time is now
Peterson?s patience getting rewarded

By Brian Howell
Longmont Times-Call

ENGLEWOOD ? Kenny Peterson is finally making an impact for the Denver Broncos.

During a season in which the team has shuffled through defensive linemen, Peterson is one of the fresh faces getting playing time.

?I knew (God) would open up a window somewhere,? he said. ?I just waited. Anywhere anybody called me, I would have jumped at the opportunity.?

In his fifth year out of Ohio State University, Peterson has been going through one of his toughest professional seasons. He began the year serving a four-game suspension for violating the league?s policy on steroids. At the time, he said the positive test was the result of a metabolism pill that he didn?t know contained a banned substance.

Once his suspension was over, the Broncos cut him, and Peterson spent six weeks unemployed.

?I was working out here at (Velocity Sports Performance in Centennial) and just staying in football shape and staying around football guys, and just kept my mind in football,? he said. ?I wanted to stay focused and stay here.?

During his unemployment, Peterson received calls from the Arizona Cardinals and Oakland Raiders, but neither resulted in a contract offer. Last month, the Broncos called him back.

?I?m greatly appreciative of Denver calling me back,? he said.

So are the Broncos. The defensive line has been gone through wholesale changes this year, the latest coming earlier this week when veteran defensive tackle Sam Adams was released.

With Adams out of the picture, playing time for rookie Marcus Thomas and Peterson is expected to increase.

?Any chance you get to go out there and play more is an opportunity,? Peterson said. ?(Adams) was kind of my meeting room partner. I absorbed everything (from him). That part of it I miss, but it?s an opportunity for me to go out there and showcase more what I can do.?

Peterson came into the NFL with quite a r?sum?. He was an All-Big Ten selection in 2002 while helping Ohio State to the BCS National Championship. He also was projected as a possible first-round choice but wound up being selected in the third round by Green Bay.

He played three seasons with the Packers and recorded his first three sacks in 2005. Peterson never started for Green Bay, though, and played sparingly when he did get a chance.

?You go from playing in the national championship and being on the top to being back on the bottom,? he said. ?It?s definitely humbling, but I went in with eyes wide open, trying to wonder, ?When is it my shot?? I was patient and learned from guys.?

BROOMFIELD, Colo. (CBS4) ―

If you saw a giant man hit a golf drive in your direction and then wave from the tee, indicating he was sorry that he almost hit you, would you pick up his ball and toss it into the weeds?

That's what one man did in Broomfield on Tuesday during the Mike Shanahan Golf Classic.

The tournament, an annual fundraiser that raises money for building parks and athletic fields for children, is held at the Omni Interlocken Golf Course and features many players on the roster.

Shanahan joked with CBS4 that he gets a little suspicious if one of his players gets too proficient on the golf course. On Monday CBS4 showed video that's proof positive he doesn't have to worry about Kenny Peterson.

Peterson, a defensive lineman whose profile on DenverBroncos.com lists him at 292 pounds, took a notably poor swing while a CBS4 camera crew was with his golfing party.

"Oh God! I might've hit that guy over there," said the big man.

After determining the man didn't get pegged, Peterson yelled out "Sorry -- Didn't mean that" and waved.

The man, whom CBS4 didn't identify, looked rather nonplussed when CBS4's camera zoomed in on him. He looked down, picked up Peterson's ball and then tossed it up onto the hill he was standing next to. Then he turned and walked off.

That didn't seem to please Peterson one bit. "I'm going to get my ball back," he said.

"Give me back my ball!" he bellowed. (There was no word on whether Peterson's golfing license was suspended after the incident.)

Peterson promoted.

Defensive tackle Kenny Peterson represented the biggest depth chart surprise at the onset of camp as he was starting alongside Dewayne Robertson, ahead of Alvin McKinley and Marcus Thomas.

"It's easy to try and catch somebody, but when you're out front, you don't know how hard somebody is working behind you," Peterson said. "This is a good group of guys and on any given day, anybody could be on that first team. But I appreciate it while I've got it, and I'm going to try to hold on to it."

PETERSON IMPRESSIVE: Kenny Peterson has steadily put himself in a strong position to start for the Broncos. The defensive tackle, who played in seven games last season, has impressed coach Mike Shanahan.

"At the end of the OTA days Kenny earned a chance to be our starter," Shanahan said after Sunday's morning session. "We've got a lot of competition, we evaluate this day by day. He's done a good job."

Peterson, 29, had 13 tackles and one sack for the Broncos last season.

Inside at the two starting tackle spots at the moment are Robertson, who failed the Broncos physical because of chronic knee troubles, and Kenny Peterson, who the Broncos released in October before he was re-signed in November.

"Really, the depth chart doesn't mean anything right now, doesn't matter if I'm one, two or three," Peterson said. "I just show up to work every day. But no matter who is in there, we've got to play as one unit; when guys are out there playing as individuals, that kind of messes things up a little bit.

"You've got to have guys willing to play together and be physical. That's a good defensive line - be physical. Can't have too many finesse guys, because then you get pushed around."

Thomas moves up to first team at defensive tackle
The Denver Post
Article Launched: 08/05/2008

Last in the draft. First on the depth chart.

When the Broncos released their first official depth chart of the 2008 season Monday, the biggest move was made by defensive tackle Marcus Thomas. The fourth of four Bronco players selected in the 2007 draft, Thomas is now playing with the first-string defense. Kenny Peterson had been working with the first string alongside Dewayne Robertson at defensive tackle.

"It's still close, but Marcus has earned a chance to work with the first unit," Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said. "Hopefully, he can keep it."
