DT Luke Fickell (HC Wisconsin Badgers)

The defense has struggled greatly these first four games. I believe it has to do more with the coaches versus the players. Cb's lining up 8 to 10 yards off the receiver in a passing offense ,makes it easy completion. No adjustment from the coaches ...amazing.
This same comment has been voiced by many.

Last year we played primarily the kind of press coverage many fans say they'd like to see more of. Not sure the results would dictate doing more of that, with our current talent.

On the radio, an "anonymous text by a former player" said that when a former head coach becomes a position/assistant coach, the players don't respect them.

Any truth/weight/validity to that statement?

I would think his love for OSU over-weighs that, but I'll let you guys discuss.

I could see that potential; but this situation is unique. I would be surprised if that situation were true for Fickell.

Maybe if Luke was for sure the head coach. He was realistically filling in for a year until the off season to bring in someone of Urban's pedigree. I wouldn't think that's the case with Luke, I'd imagine players still saw him as a assistant.

If they don't respect someone who coached 2 NFL pro-bowlers, Dick Butkus Award Winners, and multiple All Americans... then we do indeed have a problem, but it's not on the coaching staff. I put this in the bullshit category.

Also, our defense was fine for most of last year. It might not have been national title ready, but compared to this sloppy mess it was very very good. Our defense allowed us to stay in those games with Michigan State, they did a great job initially shutting down Nebraska (until they were on the field for practically the entire second half), and so on.

The difference this year is mainly Wither's new scheme, Vrabel taking over the DL and Fickell returning to LBs. Vrabel and Fickell will learn. I"m hoping Wither's isn't too tied to lining up the corners so far back, but it has been his "signature" aspect of all defenses he's coached so far.

I could see that, however players also respond great to guys that are young(er) and in touch with the current days - Urban Meyer, Lane Kiffin, Nick Saban, etc. Not some fat old white men like Jim Bollman.

What Fickell brings to the table carries weight considering hes a former starter on the D side for the Bucks.

Edit: I stand by what Redgard117 says. This isn't Luke's first year in the OSU system. He has coached up some fantastic defenses and individual players. There are some new coaches that may not be what we think they would be in their first year here.

Pizza Driver: Fired After Buckeyes Defense Comment
Oct 9, 2012 10:32pm (EDT)

COLUMBUS -- A pizza delivery driver says his boss fired him after he made a comment to the wife of Luke Fickell about the Buckeyes needing better defense.

The Columbus State college student did not want to be identified by name.

But says he took a pizza order at Iacono's in Shawnee Hills from the wife of the OSU Defensive Coordinator two days before the OSU-Michigan State game.

The man says he was joking when he said the Buckeyes need better tackling and that Fickell's wife laughed.

But the next day, he says he was fired.

Cont'd ...

Trust the coaches or you'll wind up delivering DiGiorno's.

I can understand why they would fire him though. While it undoubtedly sucks, I doubt Fickell's wife (or any other customer for that matter) would react well to what could easily be construed as harassment. And the man at top always has to look out for the bottom line.

Biddle:

This is from OSU (and goes against what the pizza delivery boy said -- he said Mrs. Fickell called the next day to complain):

Here?s background on this pizza issue:

? A slight (or a flippant remark or an inappropriate comment) was made by an employee of a retail establishment to Mrs. Fickell.

? The Fickells DID NOT call the manager to complain.

? The manager found out about the incident (presumably from someone at the restaurant).

? The manager called the Fickells ? to ask what was said by his employee. They told him.

? And just like they did not place a call to complain, they also did not ask that anyone be fired. In fact, they feel terrible that this person lost his job.

All they did was order pizza.

Should be noted the Iacono family owns Tommy's Pizza as well. They're big OSUAD backers.
