Denlinger to replace injured Patterson

COLUMBUS ? Ohio State senior co-captain David Patterson will miss the Michigan State game Saturday with a knee injury, but fellow defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock believes the team will fill the void.
"It's a big loss. He's a key starter. He's made some big plays," said Pitcock, a senior co-captain who has started at DT with Patterson for the last three seasons. "But at the same time, Joel Penton and Todd Denlinger have done great this year and are ready for the challenge to step up."
Denlinger, a redshirt freshman from Troy, was inserted for about two dozen plays against Bowling Green on Saturday.

"He works hard," said Pitcock, who has become a mentor to the younger player despite their high school rivalry. "He's always in the weight room, always in the film room. He kind of reminds me of myself.
"I notice whenever I leave for a meeting or whenever we all hang out in the locker room, he's always right behind me. He's always looking to see where I'm going, trying to learn from me."
Coach Jim Tressel said team doctors believe Patterson will be cleared for the Indiana game Oct. 21.
Starting right tackle Kirk Barton, who played only one series against Bowling Green because of a foot injury, is expected to return to the lineup this week.

Coach shows Denlinger some love
OSU defensive coordinator Heacock says Troy graduate plays like former Buckeye who's now in the NFL.

"He's going to play a lot," OSU defensive coordinator Jim Heacock said. "He had a great offseason. He did everything right.

"He's a great-effort, great-attitude kid. He's kind of like a Tim Anderson ? goes at it all the time and goes hard. He never makes a mistake. He's just a good guy to coach."

Anderson is entering his fourth season with the Buffalo Bills, and Denlinger is flattered that his coach would make those comparisons.

"Timmy didn't have all the talent, but what got him somewhere was his hard work and determination," Denlinger said. "I take pride in that, too."

Quotes from Todd after JT's presser yesterday.

official.site

Todd Denlinger, sophomore defensive tackle

On the team

?We have played solid. We have to keep improving. Everyone needs to continue to step up and get better everyday.?

On Northwestern

?We have to take them serious. If we write them off or joke about the game then they will come into our house and beat us.?

On the first three games

?We definitely have things we need to work on, but I?ve been satisfied with our progress thus far. Our defensive slogan is ?Never Satisfied? and we?ve adopted that and really taken it to heart.?

On Tressel?s show of emotion

?You love to see it. It helps build enthusiasm and momentum in the game. He doesn?t usually show that kind of emotion so it?s good to know your coach is behind you.?

Q What's the last good movie you saw?

A "I'd have to say '300.' It was a great movie about the underdog."

Q What kind of roommate is James Laurinaitis?

A "He's a great roommate. We actually 'dormed' together our freshman year, and we've lived together the last two years off-campus. We've gotten to know each other real well. We have a great time together."

Q Who's the Felix Unger, the neat freak, and who's the Oscar Madison, the slob?

A "I wouldn't say either of us are neat freaks. Usually, our girlfriends will come to the apartment and clean it up for us. But we keep things kind of tidy. Nothing's too messy."

Hopefully Todd is able to get significant playing time this week.

Personnel Report
By John Porentas

The Buckeyes are relatively healthy heading into the Penn State game and there is a chance that they may get at least one player back who has missed some playing time with an injury. According to OSU defensive coordinator and defensive line coach Jim Heacock, defensive lineman Todd Denlinger may be available this weekend.

"Todd practiced tonight and I thought he looked pretty good," Heacock said
on Wednesday.

"Tomorrow night will probably be the deciding factor, but he practice last night a little bit, practiced tonight more, appeared to be better," Heacock said.

Cont'd ...
