DT Tyleik Williams (All B1G, All-American)

The answer to the question, "Why didn't Tyleik see the field more last year?" Because he was 40 pounds overweight and would be gassed after two plays...

HELD BACK BY FATIGUE AND EXCESS WEIGHT IN 2021, TYLEIK WILLIAMS STARTING TO SEE “TRUE POTENTIAL” AHEAD OF SOPHOMORE SEASON
Griffin Strom on March 25, 2022 at 11:35 am @griffinstrom3

Any questions surrounding Tyleik Williams last season had little to do with his talent. That was plainly evident in the short windows that the true freshman had to display his ability on the field.

Rather, why Williams wasn’t playing more was the prevailing line of inquiry in 2021, given his high level of productivity during brief stints of playing time. Ten Ohio State defensive linemen logged more snaps than Williams last season, but only one – first-team All-Big Ten tackle Haskell Garrett – finished with more sacks than the five the freshman racked up.

In his first-ever interview session with members of the media since arriving at Ohio State, Williams finally provided an answer to that question Thursday, putting the blame on himself instead of the decision-making of Larry Johnson and the Buckeye coaching staff.

“My goals for the season were basically what I had. I always want more, but I wasn’t in shape so they couldn’t put me on the field,” Williams said. “That’s not on them, that’s on me.”

Imagine how quick he’s going to be shedding 40 lbs! And still weighing 320!

Makes a lot of sense now that you think about it. But I think we’re so used to Coach Mick having all of these guys in such great shape, but also have to realize that it’s in the player to hold himself accountable and also follow a solid diet along with working out and playing.
An elite space eater in the middle is something that OSUhas had in a while. And I really can’t think of a guy with size that can also rush the passer, that’s approaching what the SEC touts every year. Can’t wait to see what Tylenol can do with a lot of the unneeded weight gone

Sophomore defensive tackle Tyleik Williams was also featured on the list after a solid first season for the Buckeyes. Feldman admitted he could have chosen several of the Rushmen as Freaks, but he landed with Williams, who has impressed him this offseason.

He’s in much better shape, going from over 350 down to 315, and really can help the Buckeyes get back to having a dominant D-line again. The Buckeyes have several Freak candidates in that room — 6-6, 272-pound Zach Harrison at the top of that list, having once run a 10.7 100 meters, but Williams is one to really keep an eye on. His burst gets him on the list this year. His 10-yard split of 1.62 is an amazing time for a 300-plus pounder.

TYLEIK WILLIAMS LOOKS TO BUILD OFF OF PROMISING FRESHMAN CAMPAIGN

Now weighing 45 pounds lighter and boosted by meaningful playing experience from last season, Williams is eyeing an increased role in 2022.

“I just want to do better than last year,” Williams said on Tuesday. “I want to get on the field more, show what I can do and prove people wrong.”

In order to reach his goals of increasing his playing time and becoming more well-rounded at defensive tackle, Williams acknowledged his need to improve his body prior to his sophomore season.

“Last year, I struggled in the run a little bit. I was out of breath, out of shape,” Williams said. “This year, coach [Mickey Marotti] is getting us all right. Coach [Larry Johnson] is getting me right on the run fits. I’m doing well.”

DT TYLEIK WILLIAMS
A pleasant surprise as a true freshman, Tyleik Williams might just emerge as a true star at defensive tackle in his second season with the Buckeyes. The four-star prospect was second on the team with five sacks despite playing just 183 snaps all season, and both of those totals could climb in 2022. Williams has shed 45 pounds since arriving in Columbus in 2021, and he said the excess weight and subsequent fatigue were what stopped him from receiving more playing time a year ago.

His athletic feats over the offseason have wowed Day and the Buckeye coaches, and expectations are high for what Williams could bring to the table this season.
