Like most winter sports that Europeans are good at it traces its roots back to the early 20th century and people finding a way to flee from advancing Germans as fast as humanly possible.
You would have to ask the Dutch why exactly they thought going in a circle would help.

I hate that he cut down football and replied in kind. However, it goes further.
I'm Dutch heritage. My grandma and grandpa are from the Netherlands and came to the US. I still talk to cousins from the Netherlands and what they've told me is he is only saying this in essence to "call the Americans" out.
The thing is, no one in the world can compete with the Netherlands when it comes to skating. The Dutch have been doing it for 500 years to just get around. They don't get hardly any snow but there are so many canals and they all freeze.
Our best athletes do football and basketball and the Netherlands best do soccer and speed skating. The speed skaters there are almost Gods.
He's being a jerk knowing we can't do anything about it.

Everybody is somebody else's weirdo.
Stephen Colbert had a laugh-out-loud field day going after Dutch Olympic couch Jillert Anema (Colbert pronounced the coach’s last name “Enema”), who viciously laid into the US team, and the US, in an interview the other day.
It was a bizzare interview from the Dutch coach. Going on about how insular America is (fair point), but then lecturing us about how we play American football, and no one else does, so it proves how arrogant we are, or something.
Colbert was having none of it.
