F Marc Loving (Agua Caliente Clippers of Ontario - NBA G-League)

He was a very pleasant surprise in the exhibition game. Brings a lot to the table for a freshman. Hopefully he will continue to make big strides throughout the season because he seems like he could play a couple positions.

Looked like he was feeling it out a bit on offense, but loved his aggressiveness on the boards. Yes it was just DII Walsh, but he was willing to battle with the bigs in the post, defensively and on the boards.

Yeah, that was encouraging. You need guys who are role players like Marc is right now to come in and do the dirty work - especially with as thin as OSU was in the frontcourt with DT and Rav gone - that 9 in the rebound column really stood out to me after the game - was not expecting that number from him but certainly it's good to see him attacking the glass and doing his best to play his role.

COLUMBUS — For northwest Ohio and the college basketball power it feeds, it is the beginning of one era and the end of another.

Toledo’s Marc Loving and Findlay’s Aaron Craft are teammates for another anticipated Ohio State season — and they could be seen in tandem more than you might think.

While Craft is the senior star leading a veteran roster, Buckeyes coach Thad Matta said he is “blown away” by the progress of the freshman forward from St. John’s Jesuit.

The 6-foot-7, 215-pound Loving has proven himself in practice among the top shooters on a team in need of them. Even in limited minutes, he is expected to play an important role for No. 11 OSU, which opens its season today against Morgan State.

In the Buckeyes’ only exhibition game — a 93-63 win against Walsh — Loving had five points, nine rebounds, and two blocked shots in 21 minutes.

“This is a pretty big stage coming from Toledo high school basketball,” Loving said. “But the [nerves] wore off pretty quick, and I’m ready for the season to get going.”

Matta said at Big Ten media day he is “very, very pleased” with Loving, a four-star recruit and Ohio’s reigning Mr. Basketball — the Glass City’s first since Macomber’s Jimmy Jackson won in 1988 and 1989 before setting off on an All-America career at OSU.

“I’m probably a little bit surprised at how quickly he’s adapted,” he said. “He still has a lot of areas he needs to improve on, but where he is today as a player is very exciting.

“The greatest thing Marc has going for him is he wants to be a player. He’s a sponge in learning and studying film. He’s only had two ‘freshman’ practices, and he knew he had them. He came back and followed them up with a great practice.”

Really like what I have seen from Marc so far. He has bought in to being a role player and is doing a very good job of helping this team. Clearly Matta sees it that way as well as Marc got over 20 minutes in the Marquette game, providing them with a long defender at the 4 who screens and takes an occasional shot. He plays very smart and doesn't make many mistakes out there - while he did not put up big stats against Marquette, he was still playing very well. Maybe one of the most pleasant surprises that Matta has had in terms of freshmen. Certainly Marc appears to be key in helping fill the hole this team had in the frontcourt after the loss Deshaun. And another interesting point is it's so early in the year, he could get better and better as the year wears on and help the team even more as the season progresses.

Love his game. Hardly can wait to see as development over the next 2-3 years. He is going to be one dynamic player in the future and he looks to be a very unassuming kid.
Completely agree.

One of the things that's most impressive about Loving is that you don't really notice him on the floor; he makes very few obvious mistakes, always seems to make the right decisions. He looks more like an upperclassman than a freshman. And his demeanor seems absolutely perfect.

Love Marc's confidence and how he lets his play do the talking. You don't see confidence like that from a freshman (see Diebler, Jon), especially as early as the non-conference season. One thing I knew Marc would do at the college level is fill up the stat sheet, ala Evan Turner (pts, reb, 3pt, stl, ast, etc.). Didn't think he would be performing like this so early with who we had coming back and Matta's penchant for a short bench.

We'll have two (possibly three, if Q declares) open starting spots next year. Marc's has a good chance to start next year as a stretch 4 or a 3 (possibly even as a tall 2) if he keeps developing and performing. The future certainly looks bright for Marc and it's a lot of fun to watch him play.

Yup. Really enjoying his game. Seems like such a contributor in so many different ways.

Loving is getting good quick --- I think we're going to see him steal some minutes from Amir. If a team doesn't have a 250 pound center, I can see us going with Loving, Ross, Thompson Craft and Scott/Smith for extended parts of the game. Run the other team a little bit. Last year I remember Thad did this with DeShuan sliding into the post. I guess this year Ross might play a little post.

I think there are some beefy centers in the B1G, but when they sub out for a blow, I can see us going with this skinny/tall/fast lineup.

Loving is a lot further along than I ever expected as a freshman. This kid could really be something special as he progresses. I had to look at scout again to make sure he wasn't a higher ranked recruit. Love watching his aggression in getting to the basket and drawing fouls in limited minutes.

Grant Hill type of player without as big a vertical. Hard worker and integral team player. Every great team needs a glue guy. Might as well be Marc if we get hot shooting from the outside in the tourney.

I love how he attacks the basket. Nightmare for opposing teams who are thin on wing players as he can get to the line in a hurry.

Could be an underrated trait in the tournament. (I think he will only blossom as the season continues and Thad will have to play him)
