FB Aram Olson (Official Thread)

He sounds like he's a great athletic player. Any idea on why he's only a 1 star prospect? Do you think it's because scout.com hasn't really taken the time to evaluate him?

For basically every single commit who was seriously considering us and another school, the difference has been our coaching staff in their decision. These kids seem to love the coaching staff which is beautiful music to my ears.

These rankings are VERY subjective. One mans 4* is another mans 2*. In many cases a players ranking means nothing. Coaching, hard work and desire pays off. See A.J. Hawk.

It still surprises me that a kid being recruited by national powers such as Auburn, Florida St., and Ohio St. is only rated 1 star. Just goes to show you how much these supposed recruiting gurus know.

i forget where i read it- Grassy maybe- but someone said that when you look at a kid, you shouldn't even so much as glance at his star rankings. a prospect's offer list is a FAR better indicator of his talent than some subjective ranking system that is in place primarily to sell subscriptions... i totally agree with that sentiment. it's no coincidence that a highly rated player drops once he commits somewhere, as it is no coincidence that the longer a top prospect holds out on committing, the higher his ranking gets. remember that Rivals and Scout are both in this for the money. when a kid has offers from aTm, Auburn, Bama, Free Shoes, etc. it's pretty safe to assume that he's a good one.

man, this is turning out to be a pretty awesome class...

OSU FOOTBALL | NOTEBOOK

A top fullback adds power to fold

As much as Ohio State was in the spread offense last season, there was evidence yesterday the Buckeyes have no intention of abandoning power football.

Aram Olson, one of the top fullback prospects in the country, committed to sign with OSU on Feb. 1.

Olson, 6 feet 2, 245 pounds, of Irmo High School in Columbia, S.C., became the 18 th member of the OSU class.

He also completed the "i" backfield, joining Chris Wells, rated the No. 1 running back prospect in the nation by a couple of recruiting services.

"Oh, man, I don’t think it can get any better than that, having two guys with pretty much the same physical mentality," Olson said. "You’ll have two guys who really like to knock somebody’s head off out there on the field."

Playing with Wells will be a bonus, Olson said, but he really picked OSU over Florida State and others because of two reasons, the first being "how it just completely felt right on my official visit up there."

"Then the other thing, probably the biggest deciding factor, was when coach Jim Tressel met with me and my parents for two hours, one on one. Basically he just completely blew us away with what he had to say in terms of his values as a coach and what he teaches his players on and off the field."

Whether a few more recruits will fall in line remains to be seen. The Buckeyes await word from several, including linebackers Thaddeus Gibson of Euclid, Ohio, and Colin McCarthy of Clearwater (Central Catholic), Fla.; all-around athlete Anthony Bowman of Orchard Lake (St. Mary’s), Mich.; and receiver Ray Small of Cleveland (Glenville), who has said he won’t reveal his choice of OSU or Southern Cal until signing day.
A class that for a while was expected to number 18 to 20 now possibly could reach 21 or more.

Irmo fullback barreled over by Buckeyes

Olson picks Ohio St. over Auburn, FSU and Texas A&M

By AKILAH IMANI NELSON

Staff Writer

<!-- begin body-content --> Irmo fullback Aram Olson on Wednesday announced his intention to play football at Ohio State.
Olson, who served primarily as a blocking back for Patrick Goss last season, made the oral commitment during Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel’s visit to Irmo High on Wednesday.
Olson also entertained offers from Auburn, Florida State, Texas A&M and East Carolina.
“Being blessed with the choice of playing for one of these amazing schools, I knew it wouldn’t be an easy decision,” Olson said in a statement.
He said his official visit to Columbus, Ohio, earlier this month was the “clincher.”
“I knew for sure while visiting there that Ohio State and I were a perfect match,” he said.
Olson added that he felt a connection with running backs coach Dick Tressel, who also was in town Wednesday.
“I’m really excited to work with him as well as the other players,” Olson said.
The 6-foot-1, 247-pound Olson is the seventh-ranked fullback in the nation, according to Rivals.com. He joins the nation’s No. 1-rated running back, Chris Wells, in the Buckeyes’ recruiting class.
With five fullbacks on the Buckeyes’ roster, Olson might redshirt his freshman season, but he is confident there will be a place for him in time.
“From now until the first game I play, I’ll be working up a big appetite for cleaning things out for my tailbacks over the next few years,” he said.

Linebackers of the Big10 meet Aram Olsen. I know if I were a linebacker or db in this same class and had to look forward to meeting that guy at the hole all afternoon then getting pounded by C. Wells. I would have one of those megajugs of aspirin. Welcome to the family young man.

Stan White Jr.- Sr
Dionte Johnson- Jr
Ryan Franzinger- Jr
Matt Daniels- So
Steve Fender- So

Franz and Daniels both carried the ball once in garbage time this season, and I believe this is the order Tressel has them in on the depth chart. I was expecting Olson to redshirt anyways, and I think with a year under his belt, he could easily be #2 on this list behind DJ

Got the lowdown today on the JT visit to Irmo...of course everyone loved him. He took the time to introduce himself to each of the coaches to thank them for what they have done to shape Aram into such a fine young man. Everyone was so impressed with how down-to-Earth he really is that they almost couldn't believe he was actually a D1 coach.

After the visit, JT and staff went to Summerville, SC to meet with Coach John McKissick. We scrimmage Summerville annually and he is a great man...however, as much as the staff wanted to pay tribute to Coach McKissick, there is also a stud sophomore WR, AJ Green.
