Game Thread FIESTA BOWL: tOSU 21, Texas 24 (01-05-09)

With the NC and Rose Bowl off the table, this is the best bowl matchup for OSU, IMO. Texas has a legitimate argument that they deserved a NC slot, so if the Buckeyes win, there will be no question abut the quality of the opponent. I think these two teams match up very well. The outcome should come down to which team executes better. My initial thoughts are I like the lack of a ground attack from UT, I don't think McCoy's seen a secondary like ours. OSU needs the O-line to bring their A game. A healthy Beanie and a month for Pryor to prepare could mean a big offensive game for OSU. Should be a good game. I like watching teams that play traditional football go head to head. It's amazing to think that before 05, the two schools had never met, and now there are several players on each team that will have seen three games. Rubber match for bragging rights.

Ohio State hasn't played an offense as explosive as Texas. This is one of the most intriguing matchups I've seen so far. Interested in the MSU-UGA game too!
I think one could make a case for either USC or Penn State being as explosive or more explosive, but regardless, should be one heck of a game. I actually wouldn't be surprised if this ends up being a low scoring affair, considering the talents of both defenses.

I love the fact that Beanie is only going to get healthier with the time off, Pryor is only going to get better with the added practice, and I think our DBs match up very well with their WRs. The million dollar question is how our O-Line handles their D-Line, and the odds don't look good for us there.

So, we don't get to actually play for the NC this year - as our team set out to do. Instead we get to play a team that arguably should be playing for the NC and has a chip on its shoulder.

Same challenge - just less potential reward.

Give me a day or two to sort out my excitement level on this one.

We've already played the team that deserves to be facing Florida the most, SC. I'm really not a huge fan of B12 football, and I'm certainly not scared of McCoy, whom this defense has beat up pretty good in the past.

StatePenn is anything but explosive. But I agree that this game could turn out to be low-scoring.

I thought about that but USC is a different sort of animal... While USC uses a stable of RB's and WR's to beat you, their QB isn't as mobile. With PSU the mobile QB threat is there, but compared to USC's running backs they don't come close. With Texas is all about Colt McCoy and his ability to make throws down the field. There isn't a big time run threat aside from McCoy himself, but they will beat you through the air.

Ohio State is going to have to come out with the same intensity that Texas Tech brought... I feel OSU will have to build up a lead, but CAN'T fall flat like they did against LSU last year. That means no holding back even if Ohio State is up by 10-14 points (if it is even the case)... No getting conservative until they know the game is well in hand.

Ridiculous. I'm a huge Browns fan, but I regularly expect them to lose, doesn't make me any less of a fan. Wanting them to win and expecting them to win are two different things and only the first has any bearing on one's status as a fan. Like I said, blind homerism is fun.
I can tell you that I picked OSU vs Miami, and OSU vs. Florida, and OSU vs. LSU, there hasn't been one game that I didn't think OSU had a shot at, unlike the browns.

This game is for the Srs. tOSU will be fine next year win or lose. The 30 days of practice will help the Underclassmen get ready for Spring. This is a chance for the srs to go out on a high that will validate their wins over scum, etc. A loss will be an end to a seasons where expectations overwhelmed a sr laden team. The talent is here to win the game but..I still haven't got a read on this team. They played great against Illinois and Michigan but Texas is another level. Can this team rally and play their best game! Go Bucks

it certanily helps Texas doesn't have any great RB's. The focus is cerainly much more limited than the last time around...

Exactly. The one thing that scares me the most about our defense is our inability to stop backs gashing the gaps. I expressed that worry back in '06 when we played them in Austin. UT doesn't seem to have that kind of threat right now, but one thing is for sure, sometimes talent doesn't show up on the stat sheets. But if McCoy has to carry the O all by himself, I don't see how this is going to be different than the last time, when our LBers whacked him pretty hard a few times and he never recovered.

I love this matchup... Texas struggled a bit with Baylor who IMO was the biggest mobile QB threat to them... I don't think Texas has played a defense as tough as Ohio State's. Ohio State hasn't played an offense as explosive as Texas. This is one of the most intriguing matchups I've seen so far. Interested in the MSU-UGA game too!

I would say that guy from Baylor is maybe a little better at throwing the ball though, but you're right so we'll see about the mobile QB. I also don't think Texas has really played a good defense either, but I happen to still think USC is better over all on offense than Texas. Yes, they're struggling for some reason lately but USC is so dangerous from all aspects. They can run the ball with power or speed, they can go playaction passing or they could spread it out and throw it.

Texas is like PSU on offense but with an more accurate QB.

I think this game is all on our defense to be honest. I think we should know exactly how this team is gonna play by watching the first three drives. Obviously we're gonna score with in the first 3 plays (), so after that I want to see exactly what kind of intensity our defense is gonna come out with. Then I want to see our 2nd offensive drive to see if we can sustain any sort of positive yardage.

This game will tell us a lot about the state of the conferences. I think the Big 12 is a better conference overall, but I'm not sure how good Ohio State is. We'll get to see another great offense, and from what I have seen, our defense has greatly improved since USC. We've been playing more aggressive lately and have been doing a better job of disguising our plays. Texas relies on Colt McCoy, so the key matchup will be how our secondary forces Colt to run/force throws. Our DEs have had problems with losing containment on the outside, so that's worrisome.

My biggest concern is our offense. Texas has a good d-line. Beanie does a good job of creating something out of nothing behind our underachieving offensive line, and Pryor does a good job of doing the same. Pryor is going to be forced to throw. He can't hold on to the ball like he has been doing all year. Luckily, our weakness will be going up against their weakness. We'll score some points, but we've been pretty inconsistent this year. We have looked very good after the Penn State game, so maybe we're out of the inconsistency..

We'll need to spy Colt McCoy all night.. Pryor is going to have to make some big throws and not try to win the game by himself.
