2023 FL DE Damon Wilson (Georgia Signee)

A lot of fans here are talking like it's the fault of Gene Smith, Ryan Day or university administrators that tOSU is behind in the NIL game. In fact it's the fault of the fans for not flooding the collectives with cash. Period.

I can’t except that.
I question if Gene and especially the B1G administrators want to dive into this full bore.

There is no metric where OSU isn’t in the top 3 in terms of fan interest.
Largest alumni base in the world.
Top 20 in the country in terms of public university ultra high net worth individuals.

I posit their marketing of NIL has been shiftless perhaps intentionally.

I think they are leery about money going to football players that could go to department facilities and maintain their bloated staff.

It simply can’t be because a lack of passion from the fan base for football.

Edit: and of course the biggest issue is we and the B1G trying to follow the rules and avoiding paying recruits as an enticement to sign.

That's an answer without consideration for the history of how Ohio State's athletic department has operated for decades. Ohio State has generally kept its boosters in a minimized time position of influence relative to other schools. And that served Ohio State well for that time. There have been no power struggles tearing the program apart.

NIL has changed things. The programs that have showed boosters to run amok now have an outlet for them to do so within the bounds of NCAA rules. Ohio State has been caught with its pants down. No OSU NIL collective has been able to gather support of big money donors and be organized. And here we are.

Don't blame the fans. The fans will bolster an NIL collective, but it's the big money boosters who need to pledge their support to build momentum.

Nonsense.

The message coming out the WHAC has been “we’ve got this. It’s going to be compliant and the best NIL in the country”

Then less than a week ago we get the message from Gene that “umm we’re not doing so well and are going to need fans to start kicking in”

The bleeping NIL site doesn’t even have a way to donate, still! There has been no plan to come up with an effective mass market campaign. No infrastructure built to execute it or anything else resembling strategy.

This is 100% on Gene and the brain trust of this NIL foundation. The good news is it can get fixed real quick if it’s just going to be an ask for small amounts from millions of people. I mean, surely to god they can do something that simple.

Again: there's really no question how to contact the various NIL collectives serving tOSU. Are they as convenient to donate to as other schools'? Probably not, but it's hardly rocket surgery to figure out how to dump money in these guys' laps. And why is it Gene Smith's job to construct easy-to-use websites for these people?

Geez.

Geez.

So Gene is asking the public to do it because it’s so easy? The Foundation is putting out messages about being able to accept donations “ soon” because this has been the plan all along?

Come on man. You’ve picked better spots than this one before.
