Former DC Kerry Coombs (Cincy Bearcats Interim Head Coach)

I could live with the mistakes if guys were flying around to the ball, but everyone looks a step slow. THAT is what is frustrating to me. Considering how energetic Coombs is, it surprises me that his defenses don't have the same energy.

Yeah, the way I described it to my family during the game was “they look paralyzed”.

They aren’t playing downhill at all. It’s all assignment based and reactive. I get the need to be fundamentally sound and playing proper assignment football.

But to be recruiting the best players in the country and be this passive is really disappointing…..if you’re gonna give up 600 yards of offense and get beat on the same run play (3) times, you might as well try some unique shit that might get home once in a while.

Just a terrible system currently…..

It seems there is a lack of inspiration, but also schematic problems...players just are not in the zip code of where they should be. Its not even like we are missing tackles for the most part, we aren't even in a position to even tackle a player. When that is happening when we have the talent we do on defense, that is on the coaches. I put that in the game thread but will say it here again. Coombs needs to just get back to coaching DBs and recruiting, though I'm not sure who is more qualified on our current staff...LJ Sr?

I just think there is something to some younger guys on staff. The game has changed quite a bit.

Haffley was an absolute stud from a schematic perspective but also connecting with players as well.

I kinda feel like our defensive staff is a bit stale and lacks much personality. I think it’s an issue. Not trying to be overreactionary, but Hafley was that guy.

We just don’t have that at moment. And our current system looks outdated and stale. I don’t care who the players are if the scheme sucks. Our scheme is so bad it’s hard to even quantify…..

I’m not even saying Coombs needs to be fired…..but we need a young, energetic mind, that can have significant influence over the gameplan. Like, I love Al Washington as an LB coach and what he brings, but he’s not known for the X’s and O’s either.

It’s tough to describe, but there’s a certain profile of coach we need to get on defensive staff, that is sorely lacking right now. And it will continue to be a weakness until we address it.

No blitzing, no pressure....you expect far too much out of constant 4 man fronts. It wears on the DL to constantly be out manned up front....it hurts everyone at every level when you don't even try to create pressure. The constant lack of adjustments....I was one of many who wanted Coombs back, but based on the post game talk from Day and Coombs, it's clear the pressure is set on high for this situation.

Agree. There were no line stunts at all and their zone blitzes were poorly executed. Our DL has some soul searching to do.

Combs needs lasix or maybe watch from the booth.
yeah… He needs to be in the booth and if that “negates” what he brings … then he’s not a DC..

who from the D staff is up in the booth? the Magnificent Disappearing Matt Barnes? LJ Sr and Washington are on the sidelines i think … so of the 4 guys on the D staff (no Fleming doesn’t count and was a poor hire) its basically Barnes and a buncha QC coaches in the booth if they are allowed…

seriously day - why are there only 4 defensive coaches … O has Denis,Stud, Alford, Wilson, and Hartline + Day … seems Day might need to rethink his balance n the staff..

Most DC in Booth. We don’t really call a defense we “play “ (not very well) a defense.
