Former DC Kerry Coombs (Cincy Bearcats Interim Head Coach)

I disagree….Kerry is a good dude and he knows.

I’d expect OSU to bring a “co-defensive coordinator” in next offseason. How they divvy up responsibility will be interesting, but I fully expect Coombs to be on staff for next 3-5 years.

I don't know how you could think Coombs will be on the staff for 3-5 more years. That is an Urban level type of hire then, and Day doesn't seem like that same type of loyal for no reason coach. Especially since his job is also on the line if the defense continues looking this bad. We have 2 teams in the next 4 wks that could light up the stat sheet and scoreboard(Tulsa and Maryland). There's no one that can make me believe that if Tulsa and Maryland have similar stats to Bama, Minnesota and Oregon that Coombs' seat is scorching hot. And Day wouldn't want him even as Co coordinator. Because the other question I have, is the DBs have looked pretty damn bad, is that on Barnes or Coombs? Because I've heard people saying Coombs should be demoted, does that mean Barnes is then let go so Coombs could focus solely on DBs? I'd take Grinch right about, tbh. But I'm sure Day starts looking at some younger talent, but none of this will happen until the season ends.

fully expect him to be there for 3-5 years!!??? You’re outrageous, did you forget our defense has been in position to let the other team kill us for three games straight?? He should not be anywhere near campus unless the defense has a complete turn around for the rest of the year.

your loyalty would be commendable if the Ohio state didn’t have the ability to hire a great and proven replacement.

You completely missed my point though. He will be here as a “co-DC” and bring in another coordinator to make the calls.

I believe Kerry stays on as a de facto DB coach. He makes too much $$ to bail on this gig, and he still brings value as a recruiter/DB coach.

This is the real question. The scary true answer is: Saban would've hired better.

Saban doesn't really fire many DCs because they usually move on up to decent Head Coach positions or NFL positions almost invariably.

Next question: who is going to hire Coombs to be their Head Coach or an NFL position? Yeah.....I got nothing.

Coaching failures are always a top down problem. Your job as a Head Coach is to hire the talent to carry out your vision.
He got the Tenn. job because of who he knew not what he accomplished,

You can’t go home again.. Ash didn’t do that great at Tejas when Herman brought him in… just sayin
Well, from year 1 to 2 when he was at Ohio State they went from 26th in scoring defense to 2nd. 2015 tOSU gave up 196 points in 13 games, right now they are on pace to give up 429 points in 13 games. Granted, Ohio State had Fickell at that time, as well. So I’m definitely not saying it was all Ash. But he did help improve the D during his time

Still believe this was a monumental miss.

The most important thing this off-season, IMO, won’t be retaining certain players or even losing Mick or Pantoni. It’ll be Day hiring someone who has experience with the single high defense he’s married to.

Coombs is a bad fit as DC. Would love to keep him here, but he shouldn’t be DC if Day is going to want to continue with C3/C1 defense.

Compounded by another bad move.

As stated above, taking Coombs away from DBs full time does not seem like the best recipe for success. There seems to be a bunch of excuse making as to why the play was so bad.

Replacing Greg Mattison with Parker Fleming does not make the coaching staff better and adding a ST coach does not improve the defense. He also does not qualify as a “new set of eyes.”

Everyone should’ve seen this coming.

That narrative is tired. OSU finished behind teams that had entirely new coaching staffs. Including B1G teams that were subjected to the same preseason practice schedules Rutgers and Michigan State

Also, some people questioned his hire as a DC because of fit. Of course we love him as a DB coach, but it sounds like that won’t even be his primary duty next year.

Once more, it’s not that we think he’s a bad coach. We know he isn’t. We’ve seen his work. Him being the DC last year being forced to coach a scheme that he’s never coached full time, let alone call plays for, was an issue. It sounds like they’ll let him call what he wants, so things may improve, but it isn’t a guarantee.

I understand the frustration with and disdain for Coombs, and I'm not suggesting he can right the ship. But what concerned me more was the Buckeyes getting manhandled on both sides of the line.

Oregon kicked our asses in a way that even Alabama wasn't able to. I'm baffled by that, because going into the season I thought our O-line was the best in the nation. Boy, was I wrong.

Woah woah woah. Calm down here D line got whipped and Our O-Line was mediocre in the run game but they certainly wren't manhandled. Stroud doesn't have decades to throw most play and only get sack on the last 2 drives if it was manhandled
