I know Apocalypto isn't exactly the big armies...epic style movie in that sense, but for what it is...it's INCREDIBLE. As a big fan and lifelong student of Aztecan & Mayan history, let me tell you...it is very beautifully done and the rituals & customs portrayed in the film are very accurate to the knowledge we have today. I highly recommend it.

That said, I would agree that Braveheart & Gladiator kind of lead the pack with everyone else chasing.

Alexander IMO was the worst...one of the biggest letdowns of the genre. Kingdom of Heaven would have been decent if the entire movie was more like the last 45 minutes. Also, Orlando Bloom is rather pansy-ish to take on a role of such masculinity.

Yes he is. Same way in Troy. I seem to recall reading that Sylvester Stallone or someone like that read that Orlando was an action star and wept.

Alexander was worthwhile just for the battle scenes!

Great views of classic Greek phalanx style tactics.
And very long spears backed by spear throwers and slings.

And Alexander's use of calvary which he became famous for.

I know this film is basically a work of fiction, but I will say that I love period/epic films of this nature...films like Gladiator, Braveheart, Troy, Alexander (wasn't as good), Hero, Spartacus, The Promise, etc.

That second trailer is the one I saw during the previews this weekend...I watched both of them again on 300's website, but thanks for posting them here, bigballin.
Braveheart, Gladiator, and Last of the Mohicans are easily some of the best movies ever to be made...absolute epics in my opinion. The classics are great too. Definitely set the standard for what movies are to be judged by.

I was so pumped about Troy coming out, and it was decent, but they didn't make it known that the war lasted for so long, they really dropped the ball in that aspect of things, and they made Hector way too nice. He was as brutal as Achillies.

As far as 300, it looks amazing. So dark and deep from the previews. Obviously it remains to be seen if it will actually be a good movie, but if it's anything like Sin City, it should kick ass. Most anticipated movie for me this year, easily.

I'm also watching 24 right now, and it's laughable at the different plot twists...2nd rate

I personally think Last of The Mohicans lacked gore and crude violence. Maybe I'm out of line by saying that because it was an excellent film, but it seemed to lack that gutty, unforgiving graphic violence that the others used to help add reality to their films.

300 looks outstanding. I must say these trailers make the movie look much better than the short tv commercial they aired (it was too jumpy and the random humor after the credits added to the awkward feel). I love the 'fight in the shade' line.

Last of the Mohicans was good, but is nowhere near Braveheart and Gladiator.

As for Hero, the unending defiance of physics is a bit much for me... and the film is too reliant upon that to be a truly great epic, imo.

Man...this thread is going to make me bust out the classics collection.

I own Braveheart, Gladiator & Troy and will probably be watching them on repeat for the next week or two (I have a LOT of free time this month). :)

My favorite scene in Braveheart is when Mel comes into the guy's room on horseback and then smashes that guy's face with the mace.
My favorite scene in Gladiator is the opening battle scene with the dog and the ginormous guy who's swinging that ridiculous hammer around.
My favorite scene in Troy is when Brad Pitt slays Hector's sorry behind and then drags him on the back of his chariot.

I expect 300 to have plenty of these quality shots.
