Frank Solich (offical thread)

I was hoping the option would resurface. I don't know how many of you follow OU games, but rest assured they have more talent in the backfield then any other position. It's not like they were flying high with the spread anyways. They have talent in the backfield and thats the only way I see them winning right now.

At least defending the option would become more of a task seeing noone else runs it anymore.

I am not surprised he wants a balanced offense. I had two trains of thoughts... #1 would be that he is picking Ohio because they are not far removed from being an option team and thus he can run the offense he is comfortable with. or #2 No major conference wanted him because they did not want an option offense and did not think he could run something else, so he is taking the OU job to show he is not a pure option coach.

I was hoping for #1 but I put the over/under at him going to another school in 4 years.

So, besides that... I could not listen to the press conference at work... what all was said??? Did he really say why he chose OU? and if he had any ties to the school that brought him there?

Thanks

Just saying how he grew up in Ohio was the only real reason that he told. He spent most of the time talking about the time he spent learning the offenses of Oklahoma,Texas,Miami,Usc and Texas. He talked about the time he spent at each organization (visiting) to learn their styles of play and how receptive each coach was. I'm guessing he's going to try to show some people he can throw the ball as well, then head out...I could be wrong but it doesn't seem that way.

As an OU alumni, I am excited about Solich coming to Athens. Even if he uses it as a stepping stone to a better job that is ok with me. If he gets a high profile job it means that OU has had some success on the football field which is long overdue.

You have to wonder if at 60 Solich isn't just looking for a stable situation. We've already talked about how Cooper can't seem to get hired at what, 66? It's sad but true that ADs consider that so much in their hiring. Urban Meyer was hot because he's also young. Even if FS lights the world on fire at OU, does a "big" program grab him at say age 63-64? That's one of the things I like about this hire for OU -- I think that an older coach is more likely just to stay. If Knorr had had any kind of real sucess with the program, is there any doubt that he'd have been up and out in a heartbeat (ala Meyer at BGSU)?

A quarter mil isn't a bad gig, and believe me, having grown up down there, he will live like a king on that.

That is a good point about his age. Also, if he wins 6 or 7 games a year he will be a hero and probably get an extension and a raise.

No kidding, that kind of coin buys a lot of Gold Star Chili, nights out at the The Union, and some Meigs County Gold.

Just heard Ricardoti interviewing Solich on 1460. When asked why Solich even considered accepting the OU job, his response was, "I've been in this business long enough to know that if someone wants you, you take the phone call."

Bucktastic - Just think... 2006 Virginia Tech comes to Athens... I think I will be down there no matter what for that one. Probable a Thursday night game... but if it is a Saturday, will just hope the Buckeyes are the noon game and OU is a night start or vice versa. Plenty of places to watch Ohio State games there.

BB - Good point on his age. This could very well be his "retirement" job. Little to no pressure. Heck, Jim Grobe is like a hero still, and all he did was bring 2 winning seasons. He can be there for 10 years and they would rename the stadium after him (or at least the street and maybe a building or two)

You make a very good point. See you on Court St!!!!

Gentlemen, count me in. I have only attended one game in that stadium while sober, and that's because I was eight years old at the time, so let's not go breaking traditions or anything like that. Us OU alums will help teach the non-Bobcats OU's version of the O-H-I-O cheer. Same letters, different cadence. You'll pick it up regardless of your BAC.

I think he may be thinking about retirerment plus a program that wont fire him for going 9-3 two years after being in the NC game. If he can win better than 50% if his games at OU he'll have a job for life.
If he wins > 50% of his games at OU and stays for the long haul, they'll rename the stadium Frank Solich Field in his honor.

Surprisingly, according to recent articles, he was only making $350,000 base at NU. I think NU did him a favor by firing him with a HC positions salary that low at a major university.

Well- One things for sure... OU football has gotten more pub out of this than anything that's happened there since the OU Alumin band got in a fight with the Miami Football team at halftime of their '92 homecoming game....

Ohio University Coach Solich Charged With Drunken Driving

Coach Led Bobcats To 4-7 Record In First Season

UPDATED: 2:01 pm EST November 28, 2005

<!--startindex-->ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University football coach Frank Solich was scheduled to appear in court on Monday after he was charged with drunken driving Saturday.

Details of Solich's arrest were not available, but the university issued a statement on Monday, saying that he was charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and violation of one-way traffic.
"I have visited with Frank, and he deeply regrets that these events occurred," Ohio University athletic director Kirby Hocutt said in a statement. "He understands that he is in a leadership position and that it is incumbent upon him to lead by example."
The statement went on to read that the university continues to monitor the situation as the legal process goes forward.

"I know Frank as a man of impeccable integrity, and I am confident that he will respond to this situation in a positive manner and use these circumstances to better teach others, including his players, the importance of making wise decisions," Hocutt said.
The university is approaching the situation as a personnel matter and Solich will continue to perform his duties as head football coach, according to the statement.
Solich was hired in December 2004 to take over an Ohio University program that had languished at the bottom of the Mid-American Conference the last several seasons.
He was fired by Nebraska after the 2003 season despite a 58-19 record as the successor to Tom Osborne, who retired in 1997 after winning three national championships in his last four seasons.
Ohio University's football season ended on Nov. 21 with a loss to Miami University. The Bobcats ended their season with a 4-7 record, which was highlighted by an upset of Pittsburgh.

I honestly would love to see the OU program get on track, and Solich looks like he has it that way...that said, DUI is idiotic, and I can't really sympathize for people that do at all unless they are right at the threshold...

I searched and didn't seen anything, if it has been posted already I'll close this
