Fred Davis (official thread)

It sounds like Fred can really work himself into the first day, possibly first round of the draft. That's excellent for him.

But I did resent the negative comments he made towards OSU during the recruiting process. I believe that's where the hard feelings come from - not necessarily that he didn't come here - but that he could have done it with more class.

I read this thread from the beginning and I found mention of some untoward comments made by him about OSU. There is no reference to that though. Can someone please tell me what were the comments he made?

"I went to Ohio State games and I really thought they were boring," Davis said. "I kind of fell asleep. Their offense makes you fall asleep.

"They're near my hometown, so they'll probably take care of me if I went there, but what's the reason to play there? To block?"

EDIT: Just re-reading those comments is disconcerting. It was a very classless approach for him to take. But I do believe he's an excellent tight end that will find a spot on an NFL roster someday. And I think that's very good for him, and I congratulate him.

Curious. Why is that classless? It was an honest assessment of how he felt. He felt the offense was boring. Frankly, at around the time he made those comments, I felt our offense was "offensive".

And his comments about tight end usage are...well pretty much on the money. We don't use the tight end to catch the ball much.

We'll all have to agree to disagree then. It might have hurt our feelings to hear it, but I don't see a lack of class in that. I see an honest opinion....that many shared.

Qhy did he need to say it? He could have just have easily said, they just weren't the team for me, or talked up why he picked usc. Not saying he had to be nice but calling a team boring is going to get some backlash.

Besides that, name the last great tightend we had had. When ever we have a te that the team can depend on they tend to get the ball.

He was recruited as a WR...

He didn't HAVE to, but just because he did doesn't make it classless either. It was an honest impression. And the simple truth remains that we do not use the TE in the passing game like many other programs. That's not a surprise to anyone, not even a 17 yr old kid.

Not here he wasn't. JT and crew projected him as a TE. That's where the stink comes from. JT noted that he'd probably end up a TE whereas Pete C apparently told him he'd get a shot at WR. But then when he got to USC, he was almost immediately made a TE. But at least he's a TE getting some touches. Good for him.

And good for tOSU. We got other guys to fill our needs quite nicely.

To be fair to Fred, when he made that statement we were coming off an 11-2 season in which we only averaged 24.8 points (tied 74th nationally) and 206.1 yards passing (71st nationally) per game (and not returning our quarterback for the next season) whereas USC was fresh of an AP poll national championship, 12-1 season in which they averaged 41.1 points (5th nationally) and 291.6 yards passing (13th nationally) per game (and was returning their heisman hopeful quarterback).

However since that statement, OSU has had the following receivers drafted in the first round of the NFL draft:

Career totals...........Rec...........Yds.......Td

Michael Jenkins.......165...........2,898.....16
Santonio Holmes......140..........2,295......25
Ted Ginn................135..........1,943......15
Anthony Gonzalez.....87...........1,286......13

This isn't counting Gamble who went in the first round as a cb while also playing wr. USC's only first round receiver since the statement...Mike Williams. Fred's career totals, 69 rec; 738 yds; 7 tds. Sometimes karma's just a bitch or maybe Fred just didn't know what he was talking about in the first place?

Even though I am sad he ended up at USC, I am happy to see that he has really developed into an elite TE

We all know his story but what's the point in considering what would or could have been...if we did that every time we would have had mario williams, buster davis, and maybe even xavier lee instead of troy smith along with many others...the past is the past...

We got some great recruits and have been constant in the top 10 for the last few years...we have a special thing going on with JT and co so let's not forget that...

To be fair to our offense. This was before Coach Bollman started playing a lot of NCAA on Playstation. Once Tressel got him the playstation things changed.
