Freddy Adu Leaving U.S

Glad to see it. I always thought the biggest reason for his so called "stunted" growth was because of lack of competition in the US. Nice to see him go to Portugal as well. Their league is not on par with Italy or England so he isn't thrown into the fire right from the start. Hopefully we will see dividends as early as '10 in S.A.

But playing in Portugal is like playing in the Netherlands. It's not exactly a development league, but a lot of younger kids, teens to there 20's are given more of a chance to play right away, and play a lot. It's those smaller 2nd tier divisions in Europe where a lot of great players start off when they are young. Because they have a better chance of playing and developing sooner.

Benfica should be good for him. Get some creative coaching and play in a league that values fluid play and not so much physical crap. He needed to leave MLS 2 years ago. As for Altidore, he should be on the move very soon as well. He has too much talent to watse away in MLS. Look for Adu to move onto a major European powerhouse if he can improve in Portugal.

Perfect situation for him. Portugal should allow him to play a lot, and the style of play there shouldn't stunt his development(which I think would have happened had he gone to England, Scotland, or even Italy).

Altidore needs to go to Europe now too.

Zizzoo and Szetela already signed with European clubs IIRC.

Szetela hasn't signed with any European club (yet) although Sal Zizzo did. I agree Altidore needs to go to Europe sometime in the near future, but I would wait until he finishes this MLS season and at least until he turns 18 in November. He has unlimited potential and he could undoubtedly become the greatest American striker ever (which i beleive he will) if he develops in Europe from a young age.

Should've went to Holland.

I thought that Japans baseball was better than our minors, which apparently isn't the case with the MLS. Considering that there are several tiers in Europe and even South America that are higher than the MLS.

The thing is though, those tiers actually are minor leagues, where as MLS isn't. The only second tier professional league that MLS isn't comparable to is the English second league(it's champion something but I can't remember).

I think MLS is on par with the Scottish teams, save Celtic and Rangers. I think the MLS teams would be better than most second tier teams in France, Spain, Italy, and Germany. They would definitely be threats for promotion in those countries, but they wouldn't contend for anything.

No MLS club would be great, or even good in a European second tier league, but they would compete and hold their own for the most part.
