OHIO STATE WILL PAY $1.6 MILLION TO MARSHALL IN 2024, $1.8 MILLION TO NEVADA AND CHARLOTTE IN 2029 FOR GAMES AT OHIO STADIUM​

The payouts are set for Ohio State’s three most recently scheduled games.

Ohio State will pay $1.6 million to Marshall in 2024 and $1.8 million to both Nevada and Charlotte in 2029 for those teams to play the Buckeyes at Ohio Stadium in games that were announced earlier this month, according to the game contracts obtained by Eleven Warriors.
The Buckeyes will pay Marshall less than its other two non-conference opponents in 2024, as Ohio State is set to pay Southern Miss $1.9 million for its Aug. 31 season opener at Ohio Stadium and $1.8 million to Western Michigan for its second game of the 2024 season on Sept. 7.
Marshall will come to Ohio Stadium on Sept. 21, replacing the Buckeyes’ previously scheduled game against Washington after Ohio State canceled its scheduled home-and-home with Washington in February. While Ohio State will have to pay Washington a $500,000 cancellation fee in addition to the $1.6 million it is paying Marshall, OSU will more than make up for that in revenue by playing eight home games at the Shoe instead of only seven.
Ohio State’s scheduled payouts to Nevada and Charlotte are in line with what OSU will pay other Group of 5 opponents to play at the Shoe in upcoming seasons. Ohio State is set to pay $1.95 million to UConn to play at Ohio Stadium in 2025 and $1.9 million to both Ball State and Kent State to play in Columbus in 2026. Bowling Green will be paid $1.8 million to travel to Columbus in 2027 while Buffalo will be paid $1.9 million to play at the Shoe in 2028.
This year, the Buckeyes will pay only $800,000 to Youngstown State (an FCS school) for its first non-conference game of the season but will pay $1.8 million to Western Kentucky for its trip to the Shoe one week later.

BIG TEN TO ANNOUNCE NEW SCHEDULING MODEL, 2024 MATCHUPS ON THURSDAY​


The Big Ten’s new football scheduling model and matchups for the next two seasons will be unveiled Thursday.

The Big Ten announced Wednesday that the conference’s new football scheduling model and who every team will play at home and away during the 2024 and 2025 seasons – the first that will include USC and UCLA as members of the Big Ten – will be released during a special on the Big Ten Network at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith will appear on the broadcast along with new Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti and chief operating officer Kerry Kenny.



Since the Big Ten announced the additions of USC and UCLA last summer, the expectation has been that the conference will scrap its current structure of East and West divisions. During a Tuesday appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Petitti said the Big Ten will continue to play a nine-game conference schedule and that an effort is being made for every team in the conference to play one another in a regular rotation.

Petitti confirmed Tuesday that the new model will include protected rivalry games; he did not specify what those protected rivalries will be, though Ohio State vs. Michigan is certain to be one of them, while Ohio State vs. Penn State would also be a logical matchup to keep on the annual schedule.

“If you can get into a format where you're protecting those core rivalries and at the same time you're creating a rotation that has members playing each other frequently, so you can provide that same type of connection, I think is really important,” Petitti said. “But obviously there are just certain things that you absolutely have to protect.”

Ohio State’s non-conference schedule for the 2024 season is already set, with the Buckeyes set to play a trio of home games against Southern Miss (Aug. 31), Western Michigan (Sept. 7) and Marshall (Sept. 21) in the first four weeks of the season. Come Thursday afternoon, we’ll also know who and where Ohio State will play the rest of its games in 2024.

The Buckeyes have two of their non-conference games set for the 2025 season, when Ohio State will open the year with an Aug. 30 home game against Texas and will also play UConn on Oct. 18.

GENE SMITH SAYS OHIO STATE WON’T PLAY HOME NIGHT GAMES PAST FIRST WEEK OF NOVEMBER AFTER 2023 SEASON​

“We will not do it in the future at home. We might do it away,” Smith said during an interview on this week’s edition of Real Pod Wednesdays. “If a colleague calls from another school and said, 'Hey, would you be willing to play a night game at our place?' We have to make that call. Both athletic directors have to agree on that. And so usually I would talk to Ryan (Day) and see if we're interested in doing that and we will say yes or no. But it depends on who it is, where it is or what time our team might get back. That always plays a role into their plan. If there's a second Saturday in November and we're somewhere and our team doesn't get back until 3 or 4 o'clock in the morning, that might be a problem.”

So a few questions now that I have had more time to digest this:

Is The Game still going to be the last game of the year? With all this change and the chance at a rematch you almost have to consider losing that part of it.

What are the tie breakers? With going divisionless you are going to have ample chance for multiple 1 loss teams that didn't play head to head, no? What kind of backwards ass tie breaking system are they going to come up with to figure out the top 2?

I suggest the team with the highest tv ratings wins all tie breakers.

Just because this league came up with a formula that could have allowed a winless team into the CCG in 2020 doesn’t mean we need to be concerned.

Ohio State’s non-conference schedules for the next five years are now complete.
OSU announced Thursday that it has scheduled football games at Ohio Stadium against New Hampshire in 2027 and Northern Illinois in 2028, filling the Buckeyes’ non-conference slates for those seasons.
New Hampshire, Ryan Day’s alma mater, will play Ohio State for the first time ever when it travels to the Shoe on Sept. 11, 2027. UNH will be Ohio State’s second FCS opponent in a five-year span after the Buckeyes played Youngstown State in their second game of this season.
Northern Illinois will play at Ohio State for the third time on Sept. 16, 2028. The Buckeyes won both of the first two matchups, defeating the Huskies 35-12 in 2006 and eking out a 20-13 win over NIU in 2015.
Ohio State, which just completed its 2023 non-conference schedule with its 17-14 win over Notre Dame, now has three non-conference games scheduled for each of the next five seasons. The Buckeyes will now play any non-conference games against Power 5 competition next year, but will play home-and-homes against Texas in 2025 and 2026 and Alabama in 2027 and 2028.

The Big Ten has set its conference football schedules for the next five years following the additions of Oregon and Washington.

Moving to a divisionless model starting next season, Ohio State will face each of the Big Ten's other 17 teams at least twice within a five-year period and no more than three times, with the exception of Michigan, which will continue to be an annual rivalry.

Over the next five years, Ohio State will face Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Oregon, Penn State, Purdue and Rutgers three times and square off against Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan State, UCLA, USC, Washington and Wisconsin twice.

In 2024, the Buckeyes will have eight home games and will host Southern Miss, Western Michigan, Marshall, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska and Purdue. They'll face Michigan State, Northwestern, Oregon and Penn State on the road. From 2025 to 2028, OSU will have seven home games each season.

Exact dates of the conference matchups have not yet been determined. The 2024 dates are expected to be released either later this month or in early November.

Ohio State will face at least one of the four new teams joining the conference yearly over the next five years, including a road matchup with Oregon in 2024, a road contest with Washington and a home game with UCLA in 2025, a home game against Oregon and a road matchup with USC in 2026, a home contest with USC and an away game at Oregon in 2027 and a home game with Washington and an away game against UCLA in 2028.

The Buckeyes have also scheduled three non-conference games for each of the next five seasons, including home-and-homes with Texas in 2025 and 2026 and Alabama in 2027 and 2028. Their list of home and away opponents for each of the next five seasons can be found below.
