G D'Angelo Russell (Unanimous 1st Team All-American, All-Star, Los Angeles Lakers)

I mentioned this in the Kam Williams thread but I was wondering if Russell will have the ability to play some PG next year in relief of Scott. I know that it was mentioned when he signed with Ohio State that he said Matta told him that he might let him play like Turner and Turner played some PG to say the least.
Well of course. Who else is going to be backup PG? Russell is really the only logical option. Kam is a shooter, not a set-up man, strictly an off-ball player from what I have seen.

I guess not too many people watched....but what stuck out most to me about Russell is how much of a leader he is out there on the floor..and how much the other players listen... it would not suprise me one bit if he got Myles Turner to come here.

The things that always stand out to me watching him is he has a smooth, quick release and he has some real passing skills. His length really helps him with rebounding and altering shots defensively.

Absolutely his is lengthy and more athletic than he gets credit for.... but I think he might have the best intangibles of a player the buckeyes have had since E.T. he has the potential to be a great defender as well....very disruptive...he runs the break like Rondo...just a better shooter.

Love all of this, Evan Turner was my dude. And if he could somehow get Myles Turner in, it would be incredible. Russell, Turner, Lee, Bates-Diop, and Tate infused with Thompson, Scott, Amir, and Kam Williams could lead to a title run.

Most important - is he attending classes? That's a hell of a situation if a sports scheduling and marketing organization is permitted to interfere with a young man's education, and if that's what the NCAA is doing, then it's time to raise a ruckus about it.

Perhaps when the O'Bannon lawsuit dust settles, the NCAA will back off of a lot of things including their academic clearinghouse. They keep kids out of college athletics because of standardized test scores, but if you take no-show classes and aren't really educated while there, then they don't care enough to do anything.

They can keep him out of athletics, but it seems to me that only Ohio State can keep him out of the classroom. If Russell wants to start attending classes on speculation that his NCAA case will turn out okay, then OSU should do the upright thing and assure him that he can complete the quarter or semester regardless of outcome. OSU needs to realize their duties as educators precede their obligation to generate ticket revenue.

Re: http://buckeyextra.dispatch.com/con.../osu-mens-basket-sports-report-lead-0617.html

The above article doesn't sound like it. They use the terms "not cleared to enroll with other freshmen" and "did not begin the summer semester with his teammates". I do not believe that he can receive an athletic scholarship before he is "cleared" by the NCAA, and I doubt that he would pay his own way to enroll/attend classes before he is cleared by the NCAA.

If you recall LaQuinton Ross was initially declared ineligible player and couldn't attend classes on an athletic scholarship per: http://buckeyextra.dispatch.com/content/blogs/hoops-and-scoops/2011/09/ross-ineligible.html

What I mean is, that the University should pay for his tuition and board out of its own non-scholarshop funds, and make a bookkeeping transfer if he's approved, but I'll bet that's forbidden by the NCAA too, and if so, it's a disgrace to OSU (and hundreds of other universities) to allow itself to be dictated to by a marketing organization in that way. Consider this: what if he's approved tomorrow, or next week, and starts to attend classes, but finds it difficult to catch up, and pulls a bunch of miserably bad grades as a result? Do you understand how transformative of the college experience a single bad quarter can be? It should be an enjoyable intellectual and social experience, but instead it turns into a misery of stress and anxiety, always trying to catch up and keep one's head above water, and it affects all aspects of one's life. I've been there, although not in an athletic context. I had a bad quarter, due to circumstances out of my control, and instead of being above the average, with a comfortable cushion beneath me, I was below-average, with an abyss below. If we do this to D'Angelo, it's just a dirty, dirty trick to play on a kid who's trying to do the right thing.
