2025 GA DB Jontae Gilbert (tOSU Decommit)

Until OSU ups their NIL game, we should not feel totally secure with any verbal.
This is not meant for you specifically, but rather for everyone who thinks tOSU needs to "up their NIL game." NIL deals are funded with private money, not university (or athletic dept.) funds. How many of you have either donated funds or know someone personally who has donated to an tOSU collective? If you have not donated, then you are bitching about other people not giving enough of their private assets to fund the NIL agreements. I'll cheer for tOSU football team, both basketball teams, both hockey teams, wrestling, and even tOSU tiddly winks team if they had one. None of that gives me the right to complain that other private individuals are not donating enough of their money to fund athletes. For those who do choose to donate to that cause I am grateful.

I realize this, but other universities have been able to navigate the up front money situation from donors much better than OSU.

OSU should be at the level AL and UGA, but not at such a huge level like the U or UF.

OSU should be able to figure it out. We will fall behind.

Maybe I wasn't clear. The university does not fund deals for NIL, solicit funds for NIL, or negotiate NIL deals with student athletes. Universities do not control the purse strings with NIL deals. Now, if you are saying those individuals who are funding the collectives and distributing the funds through NIL deals need to do a better job with tOSU student athletes that is a different story. But blaming the university for something that is funded and controlled outside of their purview is asinine.

Yep, these southern kids who commit real early seem to never work out well for us. Easier to just assume they will end up not here in the end.

Really any kid from 2 classes ahead who commits' this early its a long long road ahead

Back to the adage that you're just in the lead if a recruit like that commits. I think this staff thinks the same and why at one point we had like 8 DB commits and kept recruiting the position. But hey, you have to go after the best.

Edit: We are not going to beat the NIL dead horse in individual recruits thread and that had been reiterated several times by our mods. As said above, kids from the south that commit early decommit from us on a regular basis and have since I've ever followed recruiting. And that's under Cooper, JT, UFM and now Day. It's not a recent phenomenon. But regardless, Gilbert hasn't decommitted and this thread is about him, so let's stick with that.

Oh, I completely understand what you are saying. Somehow, other universities have maximized their efforts to get their smaller alumni and fan bases to contribute. They are involved as much as they can be legally, which right now, there aren't many rules. Our collectives, working with the university are not getting it done.

I realize the fans are not doing their part. However, it's hard to believe there isn't a breakdown at the university level with this.

Many universities who are succeeding with NIL have a department devoted to it that work with their collective(s), and have a streamlined machine.

The 2025 four-star cornerback from Atlanta (Ga.) Douglass has been committed to Ohio State since late July but the Buckeyes are going to have significant pressure to keep Gilbert in that recruiting class. He wore Tennessee gloves at the OT7 Phoenix two weekends ago and the Vols are definitely a major contender with Georgia and now Alabama after the Crimson Tide offered in recent days. Getting complimented by coach Nick Saban was a huge part of his visit and Alabama is definitely in this now.

The feeling over the last couple months is that Gilbert’s commitment to Ohio State was slipping as he wore Tennessee gloves at OT7 Phoenix and the Vols have stepped it up with Alabama, Georgia and others. But an all-important visit to Columbus happened in recent days and coach Ryan Day and assistants Jim Knowles and Tim Walton put on the full-court press. The 2025 four-star from Atlanta (Ga.) Douglass will keep looking at those SEC programs but the Buckeyes are working harder than ever to keep him.
“I will be looking at other schools right now but I’m solid with my commitment,” Gilbert said.

:roll2:Nothing really new. OSU will be in a battle until next December for Gilbert.
