Game Thread Game Nine: Ohio State 40, Illinois 2 (final)

"We're jumping out of the fire into the frying pan," Zook said.

...

"They've arguably got one of the best linebacking corps in the country."

Sheesh, no wonder Illinois is so fucked up. First, it's "Out of the frying pan into the fire". Second, we have "arguably one of the best" LB corps in the country? If he can't see we clearly have the best LB trio in the land...well, his record this year shows his ability to grasp the concept of a football defense.

Smith leads Big-10 QB's in passing efficiency for stats counting only conference games.

Troy's 12th in the nation overall, and Stanton has a better rating when all of the season's games are included.
Stanton's advantage is a direct reflection of SOS.

(Numbers are pass efficiency defense rank):

Stanton started against Kent State (#72) Hawaii (#101) and Notre Dame (#58).

Troy played against Texas (#7) and SDSU (#22).

I was hoping someone would help bridge that gap. Actually, yes, it IS usually $77... BUT if you opt for the super special ultra-insider pack (which gives even more info, but has to censor its outuput because it's TOO FAR INSIDE...) it's an even $100.02

Does the $100.02 include the tailgate they are having? Getting the supplies for that is going to be a bitch. Some of Al's personalities like hot dogs, some like hamburgers, some brats. Don't even get me started about potato salad(onions, no onions, mustard, etc.)

I thought it was, "out of the frying pan and into the skillet."

Just a thought, but when Illinois, the home of Grange and Butkus, settled on a coach Florida no longer wanted it seemed to me to say, "We're no longer a Top Tier program and we're not going to pay the fare to be one."

Hmm. Sounds complicated. Seeing as how i'm pretty dumb, I think I'll let someone else figger it out.

And just to clarify... that dumb comment wasn't directed at anyone but me :)

Slowly, Illibuck tradition returns

Thursday, November 03, 2005 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- A.J. Hawk knew it was a turtle.
The Ohio State linebacker's knowledge of the Illibuck Trophy ended there.
"I don't know the story behind it or anything," Hawk said.
For instance, Hawk did not know that the original Illibuck was a real turtle who was expected to be part of the Ohio State-Illinois rivalry for a good 50 years, but died in just two years after living in the bathtub of an Illinois fraternity. He didn't know the trophy, created in 1925, is the second oldest in the Big Ten along with the Old Oaken Bucket. Or that the trophy, now a wooden replica, isn't exchanged between the football teams, but between honorary societies at the two universities.
Matt Fulmer, an Ohio State junior and co-chairman of the Illibuck celebration for the Bucket and Dipper Honorary society, is happy to explain all this to anyone who will listen. All week Fulmer and co-chairman Reid Rice have been parading the 25-pound wooden turtle around OSU's campus, hoping to drum up interest in the Big Ten's most forgotten trophy.
"Some students spot it from 50 feet away and point at it and can't believe they get to hold it," Rice said. "And some students give us a look like, 'What's that thing?' "
Beginning in 1914, Ohio State had played Illinois for 89 consecutive years, creating the Buckeyes' longest ongoing rivalry. (The Michigan game is uninterrupted since 1918.)
The rotating Big Ten schedule ended that, giving the series two years off in 2003 and 2004. With the turtle already on shaky ground, concern grew that the Illibuck would be no more. That would shortchange the history of the Illinois game, which for most of the 1920s and early '30s was important enough to be played the week after Michigan. "If you're a big Buckeye fan, you probably know about the trophy," said OSU historian Jack Park, "because there were years Illinois-Ohio State was a pretty big thing."
So the honorary society went about trying to save the turtle.
In an on-field halftime ceremony, Illinois will pass the trophy to OSU based on the outcome of the last game, the Buckeyes' 23-16 OT win during their 2002 national championship season. Appropriately, 1955 Heisman Trophy winner Howard "Hopalong" Cassady also will be honored Saturday on the 50th anniversary of his award. Cassady was a member of Bucket and Dipper.
Assuming an Ohio State win, Rice and Fulmer would love to pass the Illibuck into the hands of a Buckeye player.
"It's the only trophy I know of where the players don't get to touch it," Rice said.
Injury update:
Coach Jim Tressel said Wednesday that right tackle Kirk Barton and defensive back Tyler Everett appear on track to the return to the lineup Saturday. Tressel said that although freshman Alex Boone played well in Barton's place for three games, Barton will get his starting job back, as will Everett.

* When Ohio State Has The Ball: OSU has accumulated 386 yards total offense in all four of its Big Ten wins. Last week, the Buckeyes had better than 40 points in back-to-back games for the first time since 2002. This week, OSU will go for three 40-point games in a row for the first time since 1995.
And there is almost no way the Buckeyes won’t get it. The offense is starting to come into its own. Troy Smith is majoring in ball distribution these days and OSU simply has too many weapons for a defense as poor as Illinois’ to try and contain. Ron Zook is Mr. Defense and, one day, we think the Illini will rise again. But their track record this season is beyond woeful. The Illini have allowed an average of 47.2 points in their five Big Ten games.
I would look for a lot of Antonio Pittman early as OSU tries to continue his momentum. Smith will also get ample opportunities to make plays with the passing game. And it would be great to see the backups – all of them – get a chance to play from the middle of the third quarter on.
* When Illinois Has The Ball: Tim Brasic is a nice run/pass threat at quarterback. OSU had 12 sacks against Michigan State, but then had just three against Indiana and none last week against Minnesota. With Northwestern’s Brett Basanez and Michigan’s Chad Henne on the dance card in the next couple of weeks, OSU needs to get back to affecting quarterbacks.
The defense is still licking its wounds from last week’s 578-yard lashing at Minnesota. I would think they will take out some of their frustrations on the Illini, who have surrendered 23 sacks and 13 turnovers in eight games this year.
* How It Will Go: Well, when you think that Illinois has won six of the last eight times it has been to Ohio Stadium – including the last two visits – you don’t have a problem getting up to see the Buckeyes extend the Fighting Illini’s misery for 2005.
Plus, it is still a Big Ten game and the next-to-last home game for so many OSU seniors. They aren’t interested in backing off the throttle just yet.
My guess is Ohio State will jump on Illinois early and often. It may not be a commanding halftime lead, but it will be by the end of the third quarter and, as we outlined above, people you’ve never heard of could be in the game by the very end.
This is November and it’s time to play championship caliber football – whether the opponent is ready for that or not. I’ve got it: Ohio State 52-14
* For The Record: I am 6-2 straight-up and 4-4 against-the-spread with Ohio State. (As of Tuesday, OSU was listed as a 35-point favorite.)
On this week’s Bucknuts Radio Hour, Jerry Rudzinski predicted OSU 44-7, Kirk Larrabee said OSU 49-10 and Mr. Bucknuts went OSU 47-10.
