Game Thread Game One: Ohio State 34, Miami of Ohio 14 (final)

This is my first post here.
I am a student at Miami. I don't understand why people who are students refuse to support their school.... even if it is second to a school like Ohio State.
Miami IS a worthy opponent for anyone. 15th in winning percentage overall. The Cradle of Coaches. Been around for 200 years(almost. 2009.) and yet we are second tier?
Why? Miami has fielded a football team since 1888(I believe. Check me, correct me if I'm wrong.) In all that time, Miami and Ohio State have met 4 times. FOUR! That's the sad part in all of this.
Yes, OSU hasn't lost to another Ohio school since the 20's. But how many times has Ohio State played other Ohio schools?
As for academia.... it's hard to keep the high standards when the General Assembly reduces your funding wouldn't you say? Wait, OSU doesn't have that problem... they get the money the GA takes from the other public universities. :wink2:

I look forward to Sept 3rd, it is destined to be a record game, either way it goes. I won't make a prediction, but I fully expect Miami to surprise everyone.

Miami is considered a second tier team because they play in a non BCS confrence against relatively weak opponents and they never contend for a national title. A heisman or two in there might help. Don't get me wrong, I respect Miami's history and I think you should be proud of your football program. I'm just being honest about why you guys are a second tier team.
Also, I don't get why there are people who shit a brick if a student doesn't root for their school. It's not a popularity contest so how is your football experience diminished by them not cheering for the team? Let it go.
As for the funding, I hear you Miami kids talk about how smart you are; why not put your heads together and figure out a way to raise some money?

P.S. Don't set your expectations too high, your DL isn't very good and that's a problem.

You guys have generally been better than most Buckeye fans, don't get me wrong. We get in a twist because(and it was said) that cheering for the Buckeyes is a matter of state pride. Why is that? I cheer for Miami, there's my state pride. I didn't know it was one a year, so I appologize, I just found it amusing that the two top programs in the state, year in and year out have only played 4 times in 115 or so years. (Yes, two top, Miami is better than UC....ha.)
As for our team.... it's all heart. Size doesn't matter, it's how you use it. Our DL will be fine. (funny you should bring it up) Miami's D is tops in the MAC, and that's no shortcoming, it can handle OSU, and has in the past. (2000 score was 27-17? something on that order? Not too shabby for a "bad D") Miami has and will continue to surprise.... eventually you'll see a NC trophy displayed in Millett Hall, I dunno when, but sometime in the future.

As for funding, Miami is in the middle of a massive $350 million dollar fund drive, what I was getting at is that the GA needs to stop cutting the knees out from under the other state universities, and giving all the money to Ohio State. 55,000+ students make it easier than 16,000. As for smart, Miami is chuck full of smart students, but putting together a plan to increase the money is hard when you don't know how much you are going to lose the next year.

It's really nice to see a Miami Redhawk fan feeling so positive about his team, but goodness I think I have more chance of falling pregnant than they have of winning a national championship in football.:roll2:

good for you. theres nothing wrong with that. i just want to know why its wrong for a Miami alum to root for Ohio State. Unless the guy played on the football team, he has zero responsibility to root for Miami. Take away some whackjob fan who thinks all Ohioans must root for the Buckeyes and give me a real answer as to why, as G4H so eloquently put it, you shit a brick when somebody on your campus has a block O.

Maybe Miami was the second best program in the state back in the 1920s, but I think a pretty good case could be made for BG these days.

My friend from Canton-Mckinley and a student of Miami put it best: Ohio State is every other Ohio school's surrogate football team. OSU has no in-state rival - which is really odd considering all the football talent that comes from the state of Ohio. Compare that to Texas or Florida.

I notice that miamians like to bring up that 15th best winning percentage. I wonder if they think just because of that they are also the 15 best program of all-time? That winning percentage is nice and all but considering they built that up against extremely weak competition for the most part I wouldn't even put them in the top 50. But I'm sure they still think their program is better all-time than those of LSU, Auburn, Florida, Texas A&M and Syracuse all with lower win percentages but much tougher schedules. Any one of those teams would be in the top 5 in all-time win percentage had they played the exact same schedule as miami.

That's funny.

I was told on MHT that if you don't support all endeavors of Miami, including academics, that they don't want you as a fan. You don't exactly have the largest fan base to begin with and you've got blowhards telling people that do want to support the football team, but couldn't care less about the rest of the university, that they don't want your support. I'm sure the athletic department and everyone else that profited from Big Ben don't feel the same.

Miami could easily be considered a third tier team. Way to get lots of wins by being around forever and playing against weak opponents.

First tier teams are the elite of the elite, often only including 6-8 teams when CFB fans bicker about it. My first tier is USC, OSU, UM, OU, Texas, ND and maybe a few others (ie Nebraska, Penn St). Florida State, Florida, etc are examples of fantastic teams that could be considered second tier by fans. But even if we expand the first tier to include all teams regularly challenging for titles (like FSU, Miami, etc)... that still doesn't make Miami a second tier team.

Here is what second tier looks like: Iowa, Georgia, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Cal, etc are examples of teams who have been in elite bowl games much more often... and got there by beating better opponents.

I'm not saying Miami should not be proud of your tradition. I think your school is a very dangerous MAC school for anyone to play. But you definitely can't claim all-time wins as evidence that you are first tier, and I would argue you aren't second tier.

To put it simply, Miami OH is below: OSU, UM, Iowa, PSU, OU, Texas, Nebraska, Tennessee, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Florida State, Miami, Virginia Tech, USC, California... just to name a few.
