Game Thread Game One: Ohio State 34, Miami of Ohio 14 (final)

Spin it anyway you want, but a couple of good seasons does not make you an upper-tier program.

Ummm...I "spun" it like this:

Do you really think there are a bunch of Miami fans who think we are one of the elite programs in college football? Come on!
and

We have a tradition of excellence, and that is something that can be measured in many ways. We're never going to out-recruit or out-spend the powerhouses, so it's kind of silly to try to measure our program's success in that manner. But given the disparity, it's quite remarkable how close we are. We can compete with anyone on a given day.

And you take that as chest thumping? What do you want me to say...that we aren't even a fly on your rear end? Sorry if it wasn't clear enough for you, but mentioning the three year run wasn't an attempt to "impress" you; it was an illustration of how our standards are a little different. The fact that you have to take a shot at it shows that not only are you and I on a different page—we're in a different book.

I'm all for optimism, now how about some analysis. What makes you think Miami hangs with Ohio State? I'm sure you've got your reasons, and hopefully they don't include appeals to 1982.

Where does Miami match up favorably to Ohio State?
What are your weaknesses, and how do you believe Miami will hide them?
It's about a week to go.. enough of this bullshit, give me something with some teeth.

From the upcoming game preview:

Miami’s results vs common 2004 opponents
Michigan L 10-43
Cincinnati L 26-45
Marshall L 25-33

That’s a combined 61-121 effort for an average beating of 20-40.

FWIW we beat all three teams by a total of 88-48 for an average of 29-16.

Another way to say it is 3-0 by an average margin of 13 points vs 0-3 with an average 20 point loss.
Thats the cold hard facts of how you guys "compete".

I cited five wins, do I serious have to list all of the wins Miami has had over 100+ years?
No need, I did a quick look and found only two more wins that could be deemed admirable. Way back in 1951 over a 9-2 Arizona State team in the Salad Bowl and in 1997 over a 7-5 Virginia Tech team. That's seven in over 100 years, but you still aren't getting the point. You built up the win percentage against downright terrible mac opponents, none of those seven wins make much of a difference overall.

CountryRedHawk said:
As for a Miami NC, BYU won an NC.
Your stupidty continues. BYU had much more national respect at that time than miami ever will and even in 1984 the system was much different than it is now with the BCS. There's 0% chance of miami ever being voted in the top two while playing the mac, but keep on dreaming moron.
CountryRedhawk said:
If Miami beat Ohio State this year(theoretically) and went undefeated, they'd probably play in a BCS bowl.
It wouldn't be the Rose Bowl for the natioanl championship and you'd be the last team into one of the four BCS bowls, so what's your point? Once again you don't have one.

I don't know anything about college football.

I am a fool.
You make good points here.
CountryRedHawk said:
I do believe that someday it is bound to happen.
Wrong again. Nobody is bound to win a NC, especially mac teams. There's over 100 D-1 teams a small percentage will win all the national championships. The law of averages doesn't apply here, meaning sooner or later you have to win one is a stupid way to think. Third tier programs like yours would need nearly all a the major schools in all the major conferences to be on probation in the same year for you to have a chance.

I hate it when we play in-state ooc games. There is no way to win.

I like Miami. I root for them when we're not involved. they've had an excellent program over a long stretch and winning there is the road to a job in the real Div 1.

So go Redhawks. Make your money the hard way, but until you can put 70,000 butts in seats at Yeager, not the Shoe or the Big House, on a regular basis you're not going to be NC.

This is what I was talking about when I said most OSU fans have respect and root for Miami most of the time. For the Miami fans to be the exact opposite is just stupid.

I'll be honest with you, I don't care for Miami at all. Never have, never will. Mostly because of the people I know from HS who went there - if that's the class of folks out there, I want nothing to do with them. Just my opinion, I'm sure there are pleanty of fine people out there. In fact, a good buddy of mine is a Transfer from there and he's level headed.... I digress...

Anyway.... I do think that they, in terms of football, are at the head of the class in the Mac (along with BGSU) and I also believe that the top MAC teams are fairly solid - no, I don't think they could handle a Big Ten schedule and expect to be at the top of the league, but I do think they could run middle of the pack consistently and might make a run at the top from time to time (i.e. Northwestern) I also don't have a problem with these guys being optomistic about their squad, and fanatical in their opinions. I think any Buckeye fan has to respect people "living and dying" with their team.

All that said, I'm still waiting on a reasoned analysis of why Miami will beat Ohio State..... Is none forthcoming?

We have a tradition of excellence,

You have jack shit for tradition. You have two conference championships over the last 27 seasons, and prior to your 2003 title you had one in 25 seasons. You've finished ranked in the polls all of five times in your history, and only once (2003) in the last 29 seasons. The only thing Miami football is noted for is as "The Cradle of Coaches", and the reason is all the good coaches want to get the fuck out of there.

Miami has a classic case of "Little Dick Syndrome".

it's called the Cradle of Coaches because Woody Hayes, Ara Parsegian, John Pont, Sid Gillman, and Bo Schembechler all got their Head Coaching debuts there...

if it wasn't for Miami, maybe we never get Woody Hayes, and scUM never gets Bo, and maybe our whole world is different.. after all, without Hayes, who's to say Ohio State would be the program that it is today?

look... i understand that you don't give a shit about Miami, but please give credit where it's due...

Is it truly necessary to trash someone personally? I tend to not think so. As for wins, I know that most came against MAC teams, and worse.

As for records, I think this is true(not trying to get a reaction) but, Ohio State has never beaten a MAC team on the road.
Sorry, had to think positive.

I guess if I really got y'all all riled up, then maybe I should leave well enough alone, and see who wins on the 3rd. Remember, anyone can lose on any given day.

Paul Brown? John Wilce? Wes Fesler?

Your point is well taken, however, as Woody did build the "modern" program. I'm just trying to point out that Ohio State wouldn't have simply been an also ran if Woody never took the job, or if he got fired in year 3. Though, it is "possible," OSU had at that point in time ALREADY invested in football. They did that, in my view, with the building of the shoe. If it wasn't Woody, it would have been someone to keep the faithful happy - or get run out of town trying.

Ohio State might play Miami on the road if Miami could offer up the appropriate revenue to make the trip - or if Miami offered Ohio State players something they might not otherwise see (i.e. traveling to a site like Sandy Ego state (which actually, OSU's away game with the was returned to the Shoe on Sandy Ego's request) Point is, it is better for both school's pocket to play in the Shoe, and if you think the Miami brass doesn't consider that factor, you're fooling yourself.

No, I know that, I was just stating something. It is better for Miami to play in Ohio Stadium, as opposed to renting out someplace like Paul Brown Stadium(65,000 seats) in Cincinnati. Although, in a few years, Yager Stadium might have a seating capacity of around 40,000. I would like to see Miami play Ohio State at home, but it isn't gonna happen, there is no incentive, really, for either school.

Miami didn't make the coaches...if anything, the coaches made Miami. Also note where I said that they got out of Dodge for bigger and greener pastures. If Miami had a snowball's chance in hell of becoming a top-tier program--ever--don't you think that one of those great coaches would've stayed at Miami? Hayes would've ended up at Ohio State, whether it was via Miami, Ohio, or some other college...Woody was at Miami all of two seasons. Lastly, note all those great coaches you listed...when was the latest any of them coached at Miami? Answer: 1968 (Schempburgler).
