Game Thread Game Six: Ohio State 35, Michigan State 24 (final)

Finally got back from the game. Lot's of mixed feelings that I don't feel like getting into right now, but the moment of the game was right before our first TD. I lean over to my friend and say: "Hey, check it out. Their's a pigeon on the field, and a scoreboard malfunction. Only thing crazier than that is if we score on this play."

And the rest was history.

After that TD we gave the pigeon a name and a back-story.

"Chucky the pigeon was born with wings too small. All the other pigeons made fun of Chucky cause all he could is hop around and flap his wings. But Chucky faced all odds and decided he would go where no pigeon had gone before; right on the 40 yard line in Ohio Stadium. Chucky, who in a previous life was a rabid Buckeye fan, wanted to do nothing more than watch his Buckeyes play, and today he was there to witness a spectacular 40 yard TD catch by Santonio Holmes, right before Domata Peko's fat ass landed on him, killing him instantly."

EDIT: Watching my recording of the game, I just saw John L. Smith's nuclear meltdown at halftime and burst out laughing.

Rocketman.... I'm waiting for the torrent as I missed most of the game

My Takes

1. Drew Stanton, MSU, and John L. Smith should be congratulated for showing a lot of heart. I think Stanton is the best QB I've seen in the Big Ten in years.

2. The unfortunate thing about great football coaches is that there's a time when the game passes them by. I think its that time for Tressel. I'm not saying fire him, but he's got to make adjustments to the offensive mindset of the team, hire an offensive coordinator, install a system, recruit for that system, and permanently scrap the spread.

Look at the talent OSU had on the field compared with MSU. But yet, we continue to play pattycake with lesser opponents for 3 Quarters and then pull out the game in the end.

"TresselBall" has proven it can work for a short span (2002) in big time college football. But now, he should recognize his weakness & hire talented football minds around him to implement a system. There's too much going for OSU right now to be wrapped in football mediocrity .. this should be unequivocally one of the Top 3 teams in the nation right now.

OK let us look at that talent MSU brought to this game --

Did we have a QB of Stanton's stature and poise??

NO -- Love to have one on the team.

Did we have an Offensive Line of the sheer Stature and out and out physicality equal to that which the Spartans brought onto the field??

NO - Boy, what rushing yards Pittman would have with that line in front of him.

Now, as most of MSU's game depended on executing on offense I feel I must stop there. After all, if I start comparing trading cards with the Spartans on D they will quickly go downhill.

Sloopy, here is my point - we all know what can and should be done to improve things on the offensive side of the ball, but let me turn around your statement, in light of the capabilities of today's opponent - on offense.

"SmithBall" proved once again it can(NOT) work (OVER A REASONABLE TIME) span (OF -- INSERT MONTHS OR YEARS) in big time college football. But now, he should recognize his weakness & hire talented football minds around him to implement a system. There's too much going for (INSERT COLLEGE TEAM THAT RECENTLY LOST TO JT) right now to be wrapped in football mediocrity .. this should be unequivocally one of the Top (INSERT ARBITRARY NUMBER BETWEEN 2 and 20) teams in the nation right now.
Fact is, today, in our sleeping giant, something awoke.

Thank God.

What a game of ups and downs today.

It was definetly a weird day at the Shoe, the crowd seemed out of it, the play was from good to very bad. However, the passing game looked a bit better, the and offense seem to be working (except for the turnovers).

The worst thing about today was the unexpected "warmth"/sunshine. I thought it was supposed to be 60 and windy, instead I now sit here with a nice little sunburn :(

Do I feel bad for Hamby? Yes, I do, but he has done nothing but kill us all year, you cant keep supporting someone that keeps messing up every single game.

Does that mean that I am going to send him hatemail? No, but he needs to sit down and figure some things out, hes had a couple of mistakes every single game now, he needs to get his head in the game and start playing football.

What a game! Except for the fumbles, great job on offense. While MSU's defense is partially responsible for this, we actually looked more consistent (dare I say explosive?) running plays out of the traditional I-formation, probably because this is what Tress knows best. Troy Smith pulled out another one of those great games after a less-than-great game. Argh! Hope he gets to be more consistent as he gets more starts. Were any of you - like me - hoping Pittman got the ball at the 1-yard line so he could get his first TD of the season? That would have been a nice touch.

What's also interesting about this game is that we lost the 2 battles Tress values most - turnovers and time of possession - and still won! Hopefully he will take this as a sign that while winning those two battles is important (and should be won the majority of the time), you can still win games with a capable offense to make up for those deficiencies. Our defense might have given up lots of yardage to their well-designed offense, but we came up with the big plays we needed, and the 12 sacks were unreal!

Go Bucks! :osu:

sandgk: "Did we have a QB of Stanton's stature and poise??"

No we don't - and whose fault is that?? This is Tressel's fifth year here .. somewhere in those five years we couldn't recruit a QB?

Not only do we not have a QB, but we don't even have a system for a QB to run. Its the I one year, then the spread next year, mixed in with the option, etc. Implement a freeking system & start recruiting Quarterbacks & skill players to fit the system!!

This aint Youngstown State anymore - big time college programs don't adjust their offensive systems in reaction to their talent. They recruit their talent to fit their system.

"[NO - Boy, what rushing yards Pittman would have with that line in front of him."/I]

You can't blame Pittman's shortcomings on the OL. Pittman is a good back, not an elite back. Elite backs get theirs no matter who's in front of them. MoC got his behind a shoddy OL in '02. I think the OL has performed very well this season.

"Fact is, today, in our sleeping giant, something awoke."

What awoke? Asides from a blocked FG runback that saved our hides, there were a ton of turnovers and special teams mistakes that I saw today.
