Game Thread Game Ten: #1 tOSU 17, Illinois 10 (11/4/06)

Worst Second Half Offense

Just wanted others opinions on our second half offense today. I am not sure, but I think we had in the neighborhood of 20 yards of offense, and my bet is close to as many negative offensive plays as there were positive. So this second half of offense for us was the worst in how many years?? The worst in a decade? I know we won and that is the end goal and every season you play a bad game and need to grind it out, so I am not throwing the towel in by any stretch, but man it was pretty bad today. SO how bad was it in your opinion?

"dude im in the 8th grade"

yeah that was last year, now im in 9th grade, and just to tell you i bet a lot of people out there in ohio had their confidence level go down..and is that how you judge people by what grade their in determines their smarts, then you must be dumb..

i dont see the big deal really. did we play like crap today?.....of course but its not like our team completely was vaporized off the face of the earth by southern puerto rico tech state community college. illinois has played close with a lot of its opponents this year and its not like its just another game for them. ohio state is the #1 team in the nation and if you have ever played football you would know that when you play the top teams you will be emotional and bring out all the stops which the illini did. they came up with some trick plays and got some pressure. we are also without boone so the rushing attack suffered somewhat and it is a windy day in illinois so the passing game was off as well. there were a lot of negative things to dwell on and im sure the team will work on them but we have a W in the win column and we need to get ready to face a much improved nwestern team next week. being #1 is a huge responsibility that must be backed up every week against everybody and today showed what everybody is gunning for against a team that looked inhuman compared to every other team in the nation. point being 10-0

Well... when you were in the 5th grade... we won the whole shooting match... and... there were a number of close games... no big deal.

Obviously I think it was very bad in the 2nd half. But its not hard to defend an offense that is calling plays like we did today.

We only passed it on 1st/2nd down ONCE the entire second half...I dont care how bad your defense is, thats way too easy to defend against.

As bad as we might like to think Illinois' is...there defense is NOT some rag tag group of pushovers. They are BIG TEN football players playing AT HOME against the #1 team in the nation. They aren't as bad as the record indicates, losing games by an average of 7points to some good teams.

I think collectively, it was the worst display of 2nd half offense i've seen under Tressel.

Nobody's pushing that button there osugrad21, and it's not whining to recognize when the Buckeyes don't play their A game.

Look two posts before yours...and then the one right after. Nobody is pushing that button?

In other words, I wasn't referring to you Bob.

So you honestly think the playcalling just went conservative by accident in the second half?

Sorry about the button reference. I'm not trying to push anybody's buttons.

I think there is a difference between playing conservative and only having 20 yards of total offense in the 2nd half. That seems to be an execution problem of a conservative offense.

I believe Tressel made the right calls. Heck, we WON. I just cannot see how a rational person can look at this game and think that we did not struggle in the 2nd half.
