Game Thread Game Two: Texas 25, Ohio State 22 (final)

Well, it was 30 degrees in April, and Clarett got drafted. So with that preface, anything could have happened at the scrimmage.

The only clear cut thing that I think we could take out of the spring game (besides being cold) was that Haw and Pittman have stepped it up and showed some production. Brandon Schnittker looks good, and a couple of our backup LB's look fantastic. A bunch of people are saying that Smith shows poise and is in command of the team. I honestly, was too cold to notice that. All and all, nothing dramatic happened, and, IMO, the team now has a painfully clear idea of what to work towards in the next 130 or so days.

I mean, if I put my scarlet and gray colored glasses I could make it seem more interesting for you...

Well We botched a couple Special Teams Oppotunitys. Two missed Extra points, an over thrown snap to the punter, and also a missed field goal.

On Defense we were very solid. Very good getting to the edges IMO when people were trying to stretch our defense out. Our Dline without our starting strong end got good pressure on the QB. The DB'S did a wonderful job without a starting cornerback considering who they were facing. The stars of the day were the linebackers of course we also were missing all of our starting middle linebackers. They were everywhere, and laying big hits.

On Offense- our running game was actually very good. Both backs showed us they can play with speed and vision. Our Line did a great job run blocking and not a bad pass protecting. Our Recievers didnt' do too bad but missing Holmes/Hall was noticeable, and as expected Albert Dukes didn't look bad. Our QB's didn't play all that well but considering the weather I think they should be definatly fine. Smith was 4-9 for like 50 yards I believe, and Zwick was 11-26 for like 106. Zwick had a hard time finding the open man early in the game but settled near the end. Smith Also showed great presence to buy time and kept plays alive although he did make a very dumb INT.

Overall I say our defense played awesome, and our offense made definatly strides in the Running game. They said we maybe showed 10% of our offense, and that we had alot of things/sets we did not run because they didn't wanna show to much so its hard to take much from our offense.

We could improve on special team coverages, and passing the ball. However, passing the ball is suppose to be our forte so I think it was mostly weather related. I think Texas has a good shot as any this year at our bucks, but I think it should be awfully tough still for you guys with the game being so early in the season.

The offense and defense seriously limited their playbook so that they wouldn't give much away. So the D knew everything the O was doing. That's what made the running success impressive. The temperature played a large role in the passing game, plus the fact that holmes was hurt, and ginn and gonzo were on the field by themselves.

Basically here's what we might have learned in this game:

1) Zwick will not start the Texas game. He may even be #3 on the depth chart after this spring.

2) Our running game is exciting. We have the skill at every position to field two strong defensive teams, whereas I wouldn't say we're as deep on offense to split up. Yet the blocking was superb and pittman/haw showed great vision, and we seem to have a good replacement for Brandon Joe in Schnittker (he was a power back).

3) We have solid replacements if anyone gets injured at LB or CB.

4) Our questionmark at DE seems to be answered for now, as Richardson lived up to his talent and went hard all game (he gets knocked for sometimes taking plays off).

5) Our main kicker didn't really participate. The backup was pretty good.

6) The long snapper was atrocious. That needs serious work. Tho that's something that's easy to practice on your own over the summer.

7) Lyons, a sophomore, was solid out there as a big man receiver. Dukes (rs frosh) is an athletic freak and constantly open, but still needs work learning to hold onto the ball.

Anyone who is naive enough to put a whole lot of stock into how people played in the spring game under atrocious conditions needs to send me a down payment for the Pan-Pacific Bridge I'm selling. :roll1:

Sorry, texas fans, since it's a spring game we learned nothing and have no feelings on the matter. That must be what we should have said. Honestly, I understand that this is a spring game and should only hold so much weight, but what the heck else do we have to discuss for 130 days?

Ok I have seen this mentioned in other threads and was sorry to hear that the original just passed so I must ask. What is the tradition of "dotting the i" in the script OHIO. Obviously he gets to stand by himself but there has got to be more to it right? Is it the drum major? Please do take this wrong, I'm sure that it is a great honor/tradition, but I have never even heard of it.

As long as we're sharing traditions, High Lonesome, can you tell the story of BEVO to those Buckeye fans who don't know it? I'm not one of them (13-0 :wink2: ).
I don't think it's in this thread yet.

Here is the story for dotting the I from the OSU Marching Band site

Also, here is a video of them doing Script Ohio (High Bandwidth, Low Bandwidth)
Thank you,

I would be lying if I said that I expected it to be a sousaphone player.

also, I am in the minority at texas on this one but I think that you will be dissapointed by our band, Worst uniforms in america and really boaring and quiet, The Eyes of Texas can't be beat though, imho

The dotting of the i is a huge tradition for our marching band. One nice thing about it is that we never have to worry about numbers in our sousaphone section. We probably cut at least 15 sousaphone players every year.

While we're on this subject, a friend of mine is going to be dotting the i at the OSU-Texas game. He is in search of any extra tickets that he can get his hands on so that friends and family can come and see his dot. Obviously tickets are gonna be hard to come by so if anyone can and wants to help him out you can pm and I can tell you how to get ahold of him. I might post another thread for this towards the end of the summer as the game gets closer and tickets are cirulating.
