Glen Mason (official thread)

Supposedly Minnesota will make an offer for a 5-year extension to Glen Mason at 1.5 million/year. However, Mason may want to explore other options before accepting. Rumor is that if Mason does not sign in a relatively immediate fashion, Minny will buy out his final year and move on without him.

The offer is supposed to be on the table within the next two weeks.

Recent Minny coaches:

Joe Salem ('79-'83)..........19-35-1 (.355)..0-0 in bowls
Lou Holtz ('84-'85)...........10-12....(.455)..0-0 in bowls
John Gutekunst ('85-'91)...29-37-2 (.441)..1-1 in bowls (incl. Holtz's 85 team)
Jim Wacker ('92-'96).........16-39....(.291)..0-0 in bowls
Glen Mason ('97-'05).........58-49....(.542)..3-2 in bowls

Mason's been getting it done up there, even with the cupcake OOC scheduling being a factor.

Would Mason really go to scUM?

Didn't Mason say after he didn't get the OSU job that he wouldn't seek another coaching job?

Does this mean if someone comes after him instead of him initiating contact that he wouldn't be going back on his word?

A job that could make sense for Mason, if he chose to pursue it would be Kansas St. Having ties to Kansas from his previous coaching stop, he would already have recruiting ties to the area. This is just a thought but I could see him having somewhat of an interest in moving on.

Good call puuting the Bo picture up there in response to the scUM question! But in all reality, LLLLoyd isn't going anywhere just yet. I think the Nebraska situation is the most interesting. I don't think that they are going to bail on Callahan yet, though I think it would be in their best interest to do just that. He has been a disaster to a once proud and powerful program. I think Mason could do very well for himself with those resources and his coaching philosophies. I personally would love to see him at Nebraska as I feel he could bring them back to prominence. In all reality though, I don't see him leaving Minny.

Where did this list come from? Who the hell is "Gary Walker"? I don't think Vandy's coach is on a "hot seat" - not after people are talking about Vanderbilt football for the first time in ages. And LLLLoyd Carr? Ted Ginn will be playing CB before that guy gets fired. The only people more conservative and predictable than Carr are the people who sign his paychecks. That program is incestuous and loyal to a fault. It's gonna take much much more that what he's done to get him canned.

Mason to Nebraska would be very intriguing. His style of smash mouth football would certainly lend well to the average Cornhusker fan. Nebraska may want to go with a safe, successful coach once they get rid of Callahan, and Mason would be a good choice. With his offense and resources of Nebraska, Mason could bring in some serious offensive talent to play in Lincoln.

That list has been up for most of the season...obviously things change, but those were guys feeling heat coming into the season and during the season. Bobby Johnson is obviously ok as is Northwestern's Randy Walker.
