Glen Mason (official thread)

Am I the only one baffled as to why Glen Mason's job is even the least bit up in the air?

What has he done to warrant his contract not be extended?

What you're saying is so obviously true that it can't be a simple matter of contract extension. Mason has to be making some serious demands for specific terms that are causing the University some pause.

Look where that program was and where they are now?

The guy has terrible recruiting tools i.e. Indoor stadium, minimal in-state HS talent, shitty weather, etc... yet still has a competitive team every year. If they don't extend his contract, they better be ready for the Jim Wacker days b/c half of Minny's talent is from Ohio and if Mason is gone, so is that pipeline up to Minneapolis

I agree with you Thump. I can't believe he doesn't have a 5-year deal that's extended every year.

Mason contract
Regardless of what you hear or read, the negotiations for a new contract for Gophers football coach Glen Mason are going nowhere.
I talked to Mason's lawyer, Neil Cornrich. He didn't tell me much, but the impression I got was that no progress is being made. Mason wants to be paid a salary that maybe puts him fifth or sixth among Big Ten coaches -- in the middle -- and sources tell me that such an offer hasn't been made. Both sides are going to have to give or nothing will happen.
It might be a long shot. But Jeff Schemmel -- the former associate athletic director at Minnesota and a man who played a part in hiring Mason for the Gophers -- is now the athletic director at San Diego State. He is looking for a coach. And with Gary Barnett not expected to be retained as coach at Colorado, rest assured that Mason's name will come up. And that, without a doubt, is a better job than at Minnesota.
Meanwhile, the contracts of the Gophers assistant coaches run out at the end of December, and they don't know where they stand.

A job that could make sense for Mason, if he chose to pursue it would be Kansas St. Having ties to Kansas from his previous coaching stop, he would already have recruiting ties to the area. This is just a thought but I could see him having somewhat of an interest in moving on.

I don't think he'd want to go to Manhatten. Before Snyder it was the worst program in football... behind Vandy and Indiana. I think Snyder saw things slipping that way again.

I can't believe Tiller is getting a mention. Purdue has been to the Rose Bowl exactly twice and Tiller was the coach for 50% of those games.

That Colorado opening does give Mason some leverage.

Or another option - I think he'd take that job if he got an offer. He knows the Big-12 North, and it's sure easier to get players at Colorado than at Kansas, where he was in the '90s.

Mason could and should take his show on the road. If the school isn't willing to recognize what he has done for that program, he has every reason and right to be offended and looking elswhere.

The Aztecs or Buffs would be great gigs for him.

Isn't it basically standard practice for any program worth a damn to have coaches under contract for at least five years into the future - for recruiting purposes? I think it's amazing the man's been able to recruit at all with not having his contract extended previously.

If a new one can't be forged, Mason and the U will part ways

When did Mason go to Miami? Quite a step up!

You don't know what you've got until it's gone.

Minnesota clearly doesn't know what it has. Year-in, year-out 1000yd rushers (plural) doesn't happen by accident. Especially not in the big ten. If minnesota can't figure that out they doesn't deserve to be having winning seasons.

I think Mason would fit in best a nebraska, a big power running game and dominating O-Line sounds like exactly what the cornhusker fans would love to see...Even better, it would mean Mason's out of the big ten and no longer putting up big rushing yards on our defense. :p

I think that Mason would be a great fit for Colorado. It is a little more high profile school and so I wouldn't be surprised if he took it, if offered.

Given the way that Colorado handled things with Barnett, the scandals and the Female kicker rape I wouldn't wish that situation on anyone. A lot to clean-up, much improvement needed on the public relations side. The one thing Colorado does have going for it is that they tend to regularly win the weak Big 12 North. The last thing the Athletic Department has available though is money (and less so after they caved and paid out Barnett's contract).

A few rumors floating around about Mason and Colorado. While CU might not have a lot of state money to throw around, they have some heavy hitters that could supplement a deal. That is all conjecture. My question is this: Mason has recruited Ohio fairly well, does his being at a more high profile school bring something more to the table? Granted, he's picked up guys who were marginally recruited by OSU, or were academically shaky, but it could be an interesting situation.
