Greatest Buckeye Game Ever!

Yertle said:
Okay, so I've heard a lot of people mention that this was the greatest Buckeye game of all time. I know there have been lots of discussion in the past, but this got me thinking about my top 5 Buckeye games (in person or on TV). By the way, I'm too lazy to look up the exact scores and years, but I'm sure you'll remember most of these games.

Honorable Mention - OSU vs. Purdue (2002), OSU vs. ASU (1997 Rose Bowl), OSU vs. PSU (1995), OSU vs. Iowa (1985), OSU vs. Michigan (1979)

5 - OSU vs. Minnesota (1989?) - OSU was down by 3 million points at halftime. Okay, maybe I'm fibbing a little. I think it was something like 31-3. Greg Frey fought back (bald head and all), and threw a TD with a little over a minute to take a 3 or 4 point lead...let's say it was 38-34? Anyways, the OSU prevent nearly lost the game as Minnesota marched down and had a throw into the endzone as time expired. Yikes. I think at the time, this was the largest come back in Div 1 history.

4 - OSU vs. Michigan (2005) - no need to elaborate. If you missed it, you can tune in to ESPN Classic in two days.

3 - OSU vs. LSU (1988?) - LSU went up by 2 scores in the 4th quarter when a pass bounced off a receivers hands and landed in another one's. The Buckeyes drove down the field twice (sound familiar) and scored their second TD on a slant route to Bobby Olive in the North endzone to win the game.

2 - OSU vs. Michigan (2002) - Michigan dominated the first half with huge drives and tons of 3rd down conversions. Bucks hold them to FG's. When it was all on the line (The Game, Big 10 Title, and NC), Bucks get the drive of the year with a Schnitker INT of a pass to Jenkins, MoC wheel route, and an option to Hall. Then, the interception as time expired! Wow! Of course, it helps that I was there to soak it all in.

1 - OSU vs. Miami (2003 Feista Bowl) - I've said it before and I'll say it again...Hollywood can't do it better. The #1 offense and the #1 defense. The MoC strip. The huge Miami punt return when it was ABSOLUTELY needed. The tipped FG by Wilhelm that somehow went through as time freaking expired. The 4th and 14. The call. The MoC TD. The hit on Dorsey. The 4th and 5 for Miami. The 1st and goal (remember: #1 offense and #1 defense). The 2nd and goal. The 3rd and goal. The 4th and goal. The 5 minutes of disbelief.......what did I just witness. The staying up until 8am to watch it all over again.

So, there you have it. I'd say this was NOT the greatest game of all time. I'd say it was the 4th greatest...which is still pretty fucking good.

Don't forget that the 1935 Ohio State vs. Notre Dame game was considered the "Game of the Century" by almost everyone until the 1970s. It wasn't the best result for us since ND won 18-13, but it belongs on the list of greatest of all time in which the Buckeyes have played.

Well 2005 Texas-OSU this year was defiantly a great game, except we didn't win. There was mistakes, but a 25-22 game between two top-10(were we both in the top-5?) on a Saturday night. That defiantly has to be a top game of at least this decade. Now I know some people say it can't be a great game because we lost, but face it, in every great game someone wins and someone loses. If I remember that game was billed the game of the year before it was played, and it was in my mind the game of the year afterward, again except for the loss.

This list is really close for me, but I look at what was on the line too. Unfortunately, during the Cooper era almost nothing is gained by defeating LSU, or Minni. If you knew you were going to habitually lose the last games of the season it's all futile.

So put the 69 Rose Bowl in there at 2nd and if we win the NC next year, we can look back at the OSU scUM game from '04(maybe #5) as the breakout game for Smith, Ginn, Gonzo, Youboty, etc.. Plus we ripped out scUM's 7th ranked hearts after hearing Danielson and Mussberg sing Henne's praises for an hour.

By the way, here's next season:

Sat 09/02/2006 Northern Illinois Columbus, Ohio TBA
Sat 09/09/2006 Texas Austin, Texas TBA
Sat 09/16/2006 Cincinnati Columbus, Ohio TBA
Sat 09/23/2006 Penn State Columbus, Ohio TBA
Sat 09/30/2006 Iowa Iowa City, Iowa TBA
Sat 10/07/2006 Bowling Green Columbus, Ohio TBA
Sat 10/14/2006 Michigan State East Lansing, Mich
Sat 10/21/2006 Indiana Columbus, Ohio TBA
Sat 10/28/2006 Minnesota Columbus, Ohio TBA
Sat 11/04/2006 Illinois Champaign, Ill. TBA
Sat 11/11/2006 Northwestern Evanston, Ill. TBA
Sat 11/18/2006 Michigan Columbus, Ohio

Bring it on.

This statement surprised me. There were these others:

1946 #1 Army-#2 Notre Dame (scoreless tie)
1966 #1 Notre Dame-#2 Michigan State (10-10 tie)
1969 #1 Texas-#2 Arkansas (15-14 with late James Street long pass)
1935 #1 SMU-#2 TCU (20-14)

The last game was played later in that same month of November 1935. #1 SMU beat #2 TCU in a game that was called the 'Game of the First Half of the Century". SMU won the NC that the loss to ND prevented tOSU from winning.

Here's a link to the CFBnews write-up of that game. From here, their top-100 games can be found (they have the 2003 Fiesta at #2, as Buckeyekid789 mentioned earlier):

I definitely agree that OSU does not have to win for the game to be considered great. However, I'm not so sure this year's Texas game was one of the best ever. It was definitely sloppy on both sides. Horrible red zone offense, dropped passes, loads of turnovers. All it had going for it was a close score and definitely top 5 teams. I remember the Oklahoma/OSU game in the late 70's as being a classic, and OSU definitely lost that one. I was just definitely too young to include it in my write-up. I definitely wouldn't have done it justice.

By the way TG5, "defiantly" is definitely the worst spelling of "definitely" I've ever seen.

I don't know, Yertle. Maybe TG05 is saying that that game was defiantly a good game. You know.. like.. that good game defies all logic as to what makes it a good game. Or it was a good game despite the loss.

Personally, it'll take me a while before I can consider that a good game. Maybe if Ohio State beats Texas next year, I can consider this a good game. But its too soon for me to consider any loss a "good" game.
