Other rivalaries in Ohio

I plead ignorance...any other suggestions? I added three more, but I don't know what else outside of Columbus is considered a big rivalry.

I can remember alot of Ohio football rivalries in the the past McKinley vs Massillion, etc. One that turn a few heads was Minerva vs Louisville The 1974-75 prevented M:osu: inerva from the playoffs

There are a lot of good rivalaries in the state, but they do not get bigger then Canton and Vs Massillon. Too much star power from those schools, too many great coaches, etc. I think it could rival any HS rivalry in the nation. I know Texas has some big time HS games, but I can not imagine any bigger then when these schools meet.

Does anybody agree with me that Piqua vs. Troy is the OLDEST RIVALRY in the state of Ohio?
Depends on what you mean by oldest. If by the first year two rivals played....then no.

This is a list of the oldest HS rivaries in the United States.

I know what im talking about! its the oldest rivalry in the state of Ohio! i have proof. i dont really care what any of you say because i have facts on it. i have a piqua football book, and it SAYS that these 2 rivals are the oldest in Ohio. I also have a shirt that says it. Massillon and Canton may be bigger, im not saying it is, but they are more known for. but piqua and troy is definently the oldest rival in the state of ohio by games played. we havent skipped any years since 1899.

Martins Ferry and Bellaire has to be up there. I believe they are both in the top 6 for all time victories in Ohio and this is the 4th oldest rivalry in the state. These schools have produced former Buckeyes in Lou Groza, Fred Bruney, and Joey Galloway.

I can remember the Dayton Daily News saying Piqua-Troy is the oldest rivalry in Ohio. Coming from the Dayton area that game always got good run in the Miami Valley. Biggest in the state I would still have to say probably Massilon-Canton. People from college always told me Dover-New Philly was a big rivalry.

OK, southern Ohio voice here, but even as I was growing up in Dayton we heard about and knew about the Massilon - Canton McKinely game. For awhile my high school, Fairmont, had two big games in which we regularly packed 17 to 20K fans into Univ. of Dayton's Baujuan field, Chaminade and Troy. Chaminade is now a Div II school, the Dragons turned into Firebirds and Centerville grew up to be the dominant Dayton football power. Piqua - Troy has age going for it, but Piqua spent a long time as a doormat in the Miami Valley League from the late forties through most of the sixties. St. X and Elder has been a great game the last five years... but Moeller - Princeton was The Game in SW Ohio for three decades. Frankly, I don't see anyone, with the possible exception of Colerain, down here that will be able to compete with St X for the forseeable future. They have an incredible advantage in facilities and enrollment over the rest of the area schools.

Little known facts.... Piqua can proudly claim Don Gentile as an athlete on the Indian squads of the late thirties. Don became America's Ace of Aces in WWII and was called "a one man air force" by Dwight Eisenhower. Put that in your Funk and Wagnalls.

Let's everyone calm down. It just is a difference of opinion on how to define "oldest". Piqua and Troy have played each other more times than any other schools in Ohio, so by that definition I can see it being the oldest. But Canton McKinley and Massillon first played in 1894 whereas Troy and Piqua first played in 1899, so by that definition I can see people saying that McKinley/Massillon is the oldest. Either way, it seems as though the poll has spoken and most people consider the McKinely/Massillon game to be the greatest Ohio high school rivalry, probably partly because it gets as much national exposure as any high school football rivalry in the country.

Wow...eventhough I played for a different post, I had plenty of friends who played for the Don Gentile American Legion team and I didn't know he was from Piqua. See, I learned something today...greenies for you cinci.
