Greg Schiano (HC Rutgers Scarlet Knights)

One game doesn’t do anything for me when looking at a season-long sample size. Sorry. You’re still the weakest link. Good bye.
Yep... Two years of this. Even 2016 as good as that defense was should've been better. 4 first rounders in the secondary, 2 second round LBs, and a host of dlineman who were between rounds 1-3. That should've been the best defense in football and while great it wasnt.

If this staff comes back intact for next season we will probably have another 30 point road loss. We need to have 1 defensive coordinator who can be given full autonomy to be various. No more "you run the ohio state defense" but instead "do whats necessary to be dominant".

that was a pretty salty unit. They eventually could not carry all the other units

Pair that defense with this offense and they obliterate this playoff field.

I mentioned it in the game thread but why NU didn't exploit our clear problems communicating on how to defend the bunch sets is mind blowing.

I saw the point man covered then complete uncertainty as to who had first in, first out and vertical help.
One third down we had a DT start to run off the field turn arround and be at the hash next to WR when the ball was snapped. Somehow we stopped them on that 3rd down

We still saw LBs walking up in the damn LOS a bunch yesterday getting caught up in the wash. I understand the thought process of making olinemen make a decision, but fuck we rarely bring them and then they just have farther to run to get into coverage and if it is a run play they are straight up fucked at the snap. It is a bullshit scheme and we have too good of talent to be playing bullshit schemes.

We just have too many years were we have a brutally bad unit. They don't have to be great but they do have to be serviceable.
I'm not defending Schiano, I just think that '16 unit was pretty salty (and it was that way much more consistently than 2014 which was epic for about 2.25 games in the postseason).

I argue it all comes down to Billy Davis.

Despite the many terrible, long runs we gave up to nobodies in 2017, we still finished #9 in total defense. Fix the LBs and the non-existent second-level tackling and we could have had the #1 D in the country.

This season, too many moving parts to say for sure who is responsible but we know for a fact the defense will improve sans Davis.

I do not understand why it is always all on the LBs. There are four guys, sometimes five, behind them that have an obligation to tackle and take the right angles in pursuit.

Because we're spoiled... Jerome Baker, Raekwon, Joshua Perry, Darron Lee, Shazier, Marcus Freeman, Laurinitis, AJ Hawk, Katzenmoyer... et al
and we like being spoiled

And now I'm going to make you feel old... Chris Spielman... graduated 31 yrs ago
