Has James Turned His Back on Akron/Cleveland?

OK, maybe so. So what? If a mfg company can make more money closing up shop in one locale and moving to some other, aren't they obligated to do that (the shareholders interest being the metaphor for James' interest in rings, money, or whatever)?

sure, i used to always pick wendys over mcds anywhere in the country given the choice knowing that a margin of that was going back to my local community. the same way i pick worthington cylinders if i can.

i think you make a good point. im not sure id use a word as strong as obligated, but i cant blame them. without going there you see it all over ohio for various reasons-wc, taxes, legal environment, regs, etc here in ohio. i think it was jilb who in the main lbj thread mentioned where all the new big time players are located, it didnt take me long to realize that the same reasons people are leaving the rust belt- is driving out the athletes. lets be honest and frank, the dividing line is the same in real life for the ordinary person as it is for the multimillionaire...

Yup. And, what's "good for LeBron" is what LeBron should have been worried about when he decided his future. Sucks for Cleveland fans, but fact is, LeBron has to worry about LeBron not Cleveland or Akron or North East Ohio.

Now, whether he did more good or damage to his image is a completely different issue, and one which, frankly, I think he miscalculated.

With basketball you are right, but I'm not sure about other sports. While the Browns have the clear majority of fans in Akron, I have met a lot more Steelers fans in the area than I would have ever guessed before I moved here.

Perhaps it is because I'm not a native, but I just don't get this attitude if he continues to support the city the way he has over the last seven years. Granted, if the charity work dries up due to an "abandonment" of the city, I get why Akron would turn on LeBron. But if it does not, why make him an outcast considering his potential to contribute to the city off the court has much more meaningful and long-term significance than any championship he would have brought to the Cavs?
The Steelers got their foot in the door in the absence of the Browns... followed by the absence of a decent team for the following decade...

As far as King Vag... I impose the concept of being jilted by the gal you were engaged to... after she breaks it off... her endless attempts at still being friends never works... she can cook you dinners... offer to go places with you.. whatever... but that dog won't hunt... it's broke... anything he does will be seen as fake and trying to buy our love back...

no doubt. and that same train of thought leads back to the backlash. this is america and he has to be willing to live with that, from parts of ohio and the country in general. in many ways kobe has recovered but his rape stigma still sticks with him.

what could get interesting... is the China market

with the Chinese minority interest in the Cavs being his access to being permitted to do business in China... will that entity rebel and block him from using any other Chinese entity for his legal link to continue there

Aren't you everybody on this board? So then it would only take 1 dick for that to be true.

Or am I just insinuating that you're the only dick on this board? :wink2:

That's exactly right. If Bosh had been willing to go to Cleveland instead of Miami, LeBron would probably still be hailed as being a hometown hero by most of those who are vilifying him today.

But should that be the case? Should leagues be able to prevent players from moving as free agents in order to allow teams in less desirable cities to remain more competitive? I know some will argue (hi, cinci) that the players would be indentured servants if they are stuck with the team that drafted them, as things were in the old days, and that it's wrong to not allow player movement.

But with free agency, teams in LA and Miami, and major media markets like NY will always have a competitive advantage over teams in places like Cleveland, Detroit, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Buffalo, and Pittsburgh. And that just sucks for fans of teams in those cities (yeah, I know the Steelers and the Penguins are doing well despite this).

The same difficulties that face northern colleges in recruiting are being played out in the free agency aspect of pro sports.
